Ky heard the emotion in his voice, and knew she was going to break down entirely if they made eye contact, so she turned away from him and looked for the boys next. It'd be easier to keep it together and be playful for them than it would be to have to say goodbye to Anneke.

Ky wrapped her right arm around Oscar so she could give him a proper hug, then very, very carefully wrapped her arm around Peter as well, hoping he didn't move suddenly and hurt her.
"Tell you what," Ky said, forcing her voice to be as upbeat as she could manage. "How about you work on making up a brand new game, and then you can teach me when I get back? It'll be a surprise you can give me!"
