Sadie watched, then gave Meyer a questioning look. He looked back at her and shrugged, genuinely unsure of what was going on himself. Maybe he should have actually listened to the new employee orientation videos, huh?

“Sadie Lovett?” Emily turned her head, the dullness of her eyes the slightest bit less cruel. “Would you agree with that sentiment?”

Emily looked back to the guards. “You are always being watched. My office, tomorrow please.” Her voice just sounded so cheery like she was almost giddy to be threatening these guards.

Sadie glanced around the area, and spotted a security camera. They must have that bugged. Somehow. Creepy. She looked at Alex.

Emily turned back around and handed Alex a bag. “Your impatience has been noted.”

“Good. Hopefully that means you’ll be competent next time,” Sadie snapped. She glared at Meyer as she realized he was also holding a bag. “Are those clothes?”
“Yep.”
“You didn’t need to throw underwear at my face, then.” Her glare deepened.
“You didn’t need to lay on the floor and have a temper tantrum.” He handed her the bag. “I’d say we’re even.”
Sadie glared at him a long moment. “Where’s my laptop. You promised I could have it.”
“Changed our mind.”
“You can’t—“
“Actually, we can,” Meyer interrupted. “Now go back to your room.”
“You’re not my mom,” she said sarcastically.

Something flickered in Emily’s face, perhaps the burning desire to smack Meyer upside the head, or the inclination to laugh at their little exchange. Instead, she flinched and quickly put her face back into the perfect customer service smile. “Good day.” She turned around to walk away.

Meyer and Sadie watched Emily, then exchanged a glance.
“Did she just—?” Have an emotion? Sadie wondered.
“… I’m taking credit for that one,” Meyer said.
“I think we share that,” Sadie said.
“I ain’t no commie,” Meyer said sarcastically, obviously being ironic. Then he turned and followed Emily back into the elevator.
