On the trip we had a whole herd of bontebok run across the road in front of us. Also saw lots of Golden Orb Spiders and a bit of giraffe. Also a Sable and Impala.
I also saw what I think was a kestrel and a house crow. Cape Sparrow etc. (Almost impossible to think of all the birds you see.) Swift. Knysna Turaco. Red or Pale-Winged Starling. Cape Bulbul.
I was woken up this morning at 5:20 am by the racket of a bird crashing into a tree just behind my head. I stuffed some food in my mouth quickly and slung my pack on. I started down the trail and began climbing up a rocky, steep hill until I reached the Ruins where we had the first break. After some photos of the abandoned buildings and wells. We carried on the path until the second sight of the road and started off down the flat easier path, the older high schoolers splitting from us to carry on down the trail. Up ahead we saw the bontebok cross the road, the first feeling of drizzle touching our foreheads in the hazy mist-filled the air. As we carried on closer to the bontebok they crossed again, undecided between grazing and drinking. We stopped and watched, letting them pass before we carried on. Going over a rise and hardly having passed the bontebok we saw giraffe, their long necks grazing the skyline. As we carried on further we finally saw the cabin along the hill and had to restrain ourselves from running. Twenty minutes later I was jumping in a dam, my feet soothed by the cool water of the dam. Feeling so good in the hot air. An amazing end to an amazing adventure.
A short story about that would be fascinating to read.
