Friends on the Other Side

I thought back to the knife.

"It glowed for a moment after it hit me," I said. "It was a faint green glow. It almost reminded me of how my ectoplasm used to glow in my jar."

"Ohh, that's some good news, finally," said Kate. "Glowing we can work with. A knife that can do something with no visible indicator is truly dangerous. So you say the glow was green? Any chance you can be specific about exactly what green it was."

I shrugged.

"I wasn't paying too much attention to the shade," I said, "but it was a lighter green. More obnoxious."

"Hmm...that is an interesting detail," said Kate. "Magic like this relies a lot on intent so usually the more obnoxious brighter colors mean more nefarious purposes. Usually. It could also be whoever made this' favorite color. But we can think of it as a good lead for the moment."

Kate let out a sigh. "That's probably all we have to go on. Is there anything else you can think of that could be helpful?"

I shrugged again.

"That's all I know," I said. The knife could have also been that color because ectoplasm was and it had ties to death, but any knife technically did. I wasn't going to bring it up right now.

Kate nodded. "That works. We can use that."

Sure Hmm...perhaps we could do a bit of planning to see how exactly we want this resolved, that should help with a scene change.

"Great," I said, very much done with this whole conversation. It felt like it had been going on for almost two months at this point, even though it was only a few minutes in reality. "Now that we're done with this interrogation, can we get to actually getting me back? I don't like leaving my body unoccupied for too long."

Kate shrugged. "We can try. There's no guarantee given how little information we have. If you end up dying permanently, well there are worse places for that to happen in."

I gave a smirk at that.

"I won't," I said, with a confidence that would probably disappear the next time I got into a potentially dangerous situation. Death, after all, had kicked me out twice. And seeing that I wasn't permanently stuck in this afterlife, it had probably kicked me out a third time. I was in the running for a fourth. "Death isn't too much of a fan of me."

"Yeah with that attitude, my brother definitely wouldn't like you."

I smirked.

"Good to know," I said, shoving my hands into my ghostly pockets. If I actually met the guy, I'd have to do my best to push his buttons. Because what would he do if it annoyed him? Kill me? He'd just be stuck with me for eternity then. Besides, I was already a ghost.

"Correction. My brother would almost certainly refuse to meet you. Too bad for you. Well are you ready to try this then? Getting you back."

"Of course I am," I said. My smirk remained. "And if I'm not meeting your brother, I'll just have to bother you instead."
