Typing or handwritten?

I was thinking about this the other night. When I type directly into the computer I get distracted by editing it and making it sound good yet don't actually progress with the story itself.

I've ended up digging out some of my old notebooks and writing in them with my trusted dino pencil, then when I type up I get to tweak parts I might have just left before, and I'm not getting distracted away from the plot. It must be working because I'm finishing things that I start rather than forgetting what my original intention was.

So, what do you all think? You have a preference and is there any reaosn why?

I prefer to write by hand first, I get distracted on the computer and want it to perfect the first type it is typed up.

I too prefer hand written,for me its more easier and more faster than to type on the computer.

Longhand is by far better for me. With pencil. Pens lose ink too fast and they have too much of a feel of permenance. With pencils, on paper, you know you can change prety much anything. Plus when you go over it to edit it, you can use pen so it stands out more. ^_~

I've taken to typing into the computer these days. My hands don't get tired as quickly and my fingers are better able at keeping up with my brain.

I only write long-hand these days if a) there's no computer around or b) I am having a lot of difficultly with the whatever it is and want to take my time with it.

Hahaha... I'm totally like you. I get distracted with editing and YWS and all that stuff, so I end up not writing as much. I have no will. What I end up doing is writing chapters by hand half the time and writing them by the computer half the time. It's weird, but whatever! ^_^

Oh, and I love writing desks...

I can't write fast enough longhand to keep up with my thought process, plus my handwriting is crap and I often have difficulty translating when transferring from paper to the computer. So yeah. Computer mostly for me. I did, however, start my very first attempt at my non-NaNo novel in a notebook for some two hundred pages, until I decided to redo the entire beginning, which is on the computer.

^ I hope that all made sense. I haven't been re-reading anything I've written since NaNo started, posts included. Just spell check and submit!

I tend to type. Because I can edit it and obsess.

That sounds like the complete opposite to what you want to be doing, but for me I really need it.

For a start I don't obsess about errors excessively, so it doesn't really slow me down anyway.

For a second I just completely mangle anything written by hand without fail (well, long things. I can usually handle short stories) and need to edit it. When I'm writing by hand I get caught up in tangents and jut drift away ... and then can't fix it. So the story is mangled and plotted holed to death and it just dies because I CANNOT continue it because I've written the plot into a dead end, and I can't go back and change things.

So, typing for me!

I handwrite things. Longhand is definitely the way for me! If I type into the computer, I think about going on the Internet or something. And plus, I've always just done longhand. Kind of a hard habit to break! lol But I actually use pens normally. They're easier to write with, and the ink is just so...black! lol I don't know any other way to put it, except it's just the way I do it!

Heh, one time I ran out of ink in my black pens and I actually didn't write until we got to the dllar store and the local pen supply. ^_~ Very, very sad...

I always write on the computer. Mostly because my handwriting is completely illegible, but also because I get less distracted. Seriously. If I try to write on paper then I always start daydreaming and forget that I'm supposed to be writing, but if I'm on the computer I stay more focused.

Unless I only have access to paper, I much prefer electronic means. My handwriting, while not lousy, is a fairly untidy, smudged, left-handed scrawl, and probably the smallest writing you will ever read. And I love having access on the computer to any reference material I could ever want.

Also, I tend to edit constantly when I write something, no matter how, so computer is a better fit for me.

Paper and pen--or often and sometimes pencil--work much better for the most part than typing. There's more character, sometimes, in hand-writing. ^_^

Though I do now and then write straight to a document. Presque Vu was trapped in the computer--and only has notes scribbled madly in the margins of a fencing journal. ^_^
