He can already be with the group. @Elinor Well, the cause of the downfall was the virus "Black Cotton". I guess you could say everything is getting worse; but since some plants animals, and humans were dying everything is just dying along with it. Like in my post I mentioned the TV stations going down as well as the radio stations, and even the electric companies cutting off the outlet power. Everything is just slowly getting worse as time goes on without a cure.

@XxXTheSwordsmanXxX If it was airborne I feel like they'd be dying off already now, since they've had to leave their apartments to get stuff before (i assume)
It was my understanding it would be a physical contact thing, like germs/bacteria. So if they touched something that one of the sick people touched, kind of thing.
Or at least, that's what I think makes the most sense? But obviously @DivinePrincess has the final say/knows what they want!
