"Not high," Apophis agrees, gazing at her food. She's hungry, but she doesn't think she's hungry enough to eat that.

The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost."

"Are either of you from Stargate Command?" he questioned, an eager glint to his eyes.

Kazimir snorted slightly, figuring he should probably stop trying to ingest food at the rate this conversation was going. "Stargate? Oh. My man, Leo..." he put an arm around Leo's shoulders. "I wasn't in any kind of command. I was on a space ship with my gang. I was an assassin, bro."

Apophis raises an eyebrow. "I've never heard of a Stargate. Even if I had, I wouldn't be in command - I'm an assassin who works for the Devil himself."

He let out a heavy sigh. He could say goodbye to his dreams of meeting SG-1 and General Hammond. For a moment there, he had actually thought that such a thing was possible. "I should have guessed that," he dismally said. "The SGC wouldn't get caught here-"

He looked over at Apophis. "You work for the Devil?" he asked, suddenly realizing just how odd of a sentence that was. "That's some gang leader, right? Or the leader of a...rock band, maybe? Because the actual Devil doesn't exist."

"No, of course he doesn't, and neither do ancient Egyptian gods like yours truly," she replies dryly. "When I said the Devil I meant the Devil, the one and only - Lucifer, youngest of the Princes and King of Hell last I checked."

Kazimir stared at Apophis with eyesbrows raised. She was serious. “Geez. Guess that stuff’s real then.”

“Girl, I don’t know much about mythology and earthen history or whatever,” Kazimir replied dully, finally convincing himself to take another bite of food. It was... just as unenjoyable as before. Sigh.

"It wouldn't be the first time someone had that name," Maahes said, trying to keep calm. "You'd be surprised how many I know."

That was a little bit misleading. It was only one, but that was one too many - just thinking about him gave Maahes a headache. Besides, someone having a weird name didn't mean they were some sort of supernatural being. He just happened to have an odd name. And the ascended Alterans did, too. And that weird thing he had encountered on that planet a few months back-

Okay, so maybe there were more exceptions to the rule than he thought. But people on Earth named their kids all sorts of stuff, and someone taking a leaf from mythology when naming their child wasn't exactly unheard of.

"The Devil can't exist," Maahes declared. "He just can't."

That would mean he should have met him, right? He had been wandering Earth for thousands of years. They should have run into each other! And he was a demon, in a sense. Didn't that mean he would have served under the Devil, if he really did exist?

"And why, pray tell, is such a possibility so impossible?" she asks. "He's powerful and he's deceptive. You wouldn't know about him unless he wanted you to or you served under him." She knew that well enough - no one knew she existed, either, not in the modern day, and not unless she wanted them to. And she'd learned it all from him.

"Because," Maahes vaguely replied, unable to come up with a good reply that didn't give away the truth about his humanity - or, rather, the lack of it. "It just is! I would have definitely met him if he existed."

"That's the worst argument I've heard in my life aside from nothing more than the word 'because'."

He groaned as quietly as he could and went back to eating the meal he absolutely abhorred. They didn't understand. Demon, spirit, djinni - whatever he really was, it was something inherently supernatural and certainly not human. He had wandered the earth for thousands of years, and spent a good chunk of time in the Other Place. Meeting the Devil wasn't just something that was a possibility; it should have happened by now.

Besides, that meant that demons in a completely different sense than himself existed. And how could there be two different types of demons running around the universe, each functioning in completely different ways? Just thinking about it made his head hurt. Or that was just the food. It was hard to tell with the way that his essence digested matter and how it moved about his body.
