@EvangelineFire I've never seen Avatar the Last Airbender, to be honest, but I imagine it might be somewhat similar. Frosts can freeze water and create ice into whatever shapes they desire, Flames can create fire and shape it into whatever they want, Earths can manipulate stone and earth into whatever they want, Oceans can melt water, create it out of thin air, and shape it how they wish, Winds can manipulate air however they choose, and Darks have any type of power that doesn't fit into the above categories. Darks are a pretty rare type of magician.

The Prince won't be very apparent throughout the story, so it's really only two. However, they are rare, so they will be the only ones in the storybook.
To specify, I mean that since dark types are really miscellaneous magic users, what miscellaneous ability might he have. Look at @Desdemona's for an example. If you intended for your character to be able to will darkness itself, I would consider that more of a form of earth type, since they could manipulate the surface the shadow is on. Be creative. I'm not trying to limit magic's potential. So, you can have a dark type, but avoiding it would be preferred.
Can i run a few things by, and you guys tell me if its legit, otherwise, i'll change.
so my character's power comes from a dragon heart that has been replaced with his heart. It now rests within his chest, and he can conjure up power from within himself. This was done by the dragons of coarse, to be the prince's protector. A Prince always has somewhat of an over powered character by his side.
however, Carter was lost to the Dragons, and found by assassins. He is filled with darkness, but somewhere through his travels he came to believe that he wanted to redeem all his foul acts. he will then travel with the heroes, attempting to do good, but his darker side will sometimes take over leading to unexpected and shocking scenes of betrayel and other dark notions that you can think of.
so basically beginning of story he is bad, mid story he becomes good, but with bad taking over, and towards the end he is perceived as fully good, until his prince shows up and he takes the stand against good, and with the darkness.
His dark power would allow him to teleport within the shadows, and drain life force.
if possible i would like him, due to his dragin heart, be able to semi transform into a beast that can emit negative energy/dark matter.
