Unique Character Names!

Okay so I've come up with some pretty weird names for my characters, but I really want to see if I'm the only one. So what are some weird names you've given your characters? Or how do you go about choosing your characters? To start off, here are some of my favorite weird ones:

There you go! So tell me: how do you choose your character names and what are some weird ones you like?

I really don't like weird character names. I make them up sometimes, if it suits my world and story, but I try and keep them simple. Being weird just for the sake of being weird, or spelling normal names differently really annoys me. It comes across gimmicky, and what's the point of having a normal name that's spelled with too many letters? The same with puns -- I can't take a character or an author seriously if they've got silly names.

Yeah, that explains me as well. I can't stand completely pointless names.

The weirdest normal name (meaning one that is actually a name, not just a word I made up) that I've made would probably be

Obsidian Scarlet (Scarlet to her friends)

But people tend to think "Gervaise de Montmar" is strange too... but I think that's just because the name's so uncommon.

Well. Depends on what you deem weird.

I have one trilogy with characters that have mostly Arabic/Turkish names, but that was because the majority of the cast was Middle Eastern. There's also, of course, the one person with the Italian name and the few from-the-UK names. So, for example of different names, there's Direnc (Turkish), Mirabella (Italian), Coh/Sadira/Anwar/Badal (Arabic), and Niamh (Irish). Of course, Mirabella and Coh also have Badri, a Turkish name, for their last name.

I don't think the names are weird. They're pretty, in my opinion. Some are pronounced oddly (see Niamh--it sounds like NEEV), but, in general, it's not like they're bizarre or Mary-Sue-like and, for the story, their names aren't random (they have to do with where they were born and such). So.

Well, the thing is, I take names from clients we get, so they're kind of normal names, but we have oddly named clients so

I usually use names from the area and time period.

I commonly write about first century Israel (events around the life of Jesus Christ) so I usually use Greek, Latin, or Hebrew names, as was common back then. But I never use the English form of the names. I use the original Hebrew or Greek. So instead of "Joesph" I would us "Yoseph (f)", instead of "James", "Iamus".

Other names I've used:
Halah, Seba, Yeshua (Jesus' hebrew name), Calev, Lira, Boaz (Bo'az), Eth-Baal, Yohan, Keth, Azariah, Heylel (Satan's Hebrew name), Thoma, Yacov, Renatus, Iacan, Naava, Kitra, Ezra...

I've also used these names in my non-Hebrew stories:
Blaire, Seeley, Leviticus, Lottie, Ethelred, Beau, Creed, Hooper, Wither, Pride, Wilhelmina, Matthias, Rue, Igor, Pavel, Dima.

Andraea (formally Andrea), Leeva, Sirithis, Araknese, Ilsen, Carayule, Harcles, Vivinette, and Dimmenae. Some names from a different language in one of my stories: Prisa, Yuttus, Lunes, Giste, Serperke, and Precos.
