This is why you back things up!

Saw this on Reddit, and it made me immediately think of all the stuff I've lost over the years just because I didn't back the documents up (fortunately, anything YWS-related is backed up thrice!).

Back your stories, poems, essays, etc., up! Preferably on a thumb-drive, although online storage works too.

My computer had what I call a "reincarnation." It's old and kinda buggy, and about 2.5 years ago I turned it on and it gave me all these options to go through to restart it... I tried them all, and finally I had to select the option to erase everything and start all over I lost MS Word, Photoshop, tons of photos and saved trinkets, and my laptop's never been the same since lol.

Luckily, I've never lost homework or anything vital, but I'm extra careful now to save often and backup what I think I would miss. Oh technology! Your fatal flaw!

I've done something similar to this in the past, except it was a USB with a story I'd been working on for a good few months and school work on it that someone from my school stole. I put up my request for the person to return it on the school notices but they didn't come forward.

I just back up my GCSE stuff and stories on my computer and skydrive now.

You'd think a 5th year Chemistry PHD student might be smart enough to back up their work at some point in 5 years...

Edit: And not put their password in an advert.

I once lost forty five pages of a novel I was working on because I didn't think to back it up. Then I bought a flash drive.

Ouch, I'm sorry for this guy, I hope he get's his thesis back.

When I was writing my Dissertation I was so paranoid I'd lose everything even though I've never lost a large chunk of something before.

I'd have it on my laptop, on a USB, on two external hard drives, on the Uni server, emailed to myself and other people. There was no way I was losing it!

Everytime I finish writing something, even if I just added a parapraph, I send an email to myself with it attached. I do it so much it's like part of my routine now. Go to bed and email myself my writing. I also copy it onto a USB stick.

With my thesis just done; I can totes echo what beckiwuh is saying.

I had 2 copies on my laptop, one on my desktop, two pendrives, 2 email accounts and my mentor's PC at college.

I had my novel on a USB, then the USB stopped working, and I lost everything. But all that I had written was here, so I copied it chapter by chapter onto the WriterFeedPad, then onto googledocs, then onto two USBs and my account on the school network, then when I got home I put it onto my laptop and the family notebook harddrive. Some of the copies aren't up to date, but I have basically all of it on the web and USBs. Although, sending it to yourself seems like a good idea. (I did the same for my GCSE work too)

That's also a good point about the USB stick; like any storage device, they inevitably fail.

For my Masters work, I had it saved on a USB, WriterfeedPad, sent to myself in emails, sent to other people through emails and then, most importantly for me, I printed it. Every time I added new things I printed off the new pages and added them to an "updated" folder, moved the old pages to a "edits" folder. Now I have a bajillion pages of paper, but I also get to see my editing process in physical form.
