I'm wondering if anybody here thinks they'd be able to write if they went to school.

I honestly doubt it, so I picked "no". When I finish school at about 1 or 2 PM, I hit the computer. Not literally, my computer doesn't have dents in it or anything, but I just go to YWS and surf all day. Sometimes I play Wii. I would not be able to write if I went to public school.

No offense to any public schoolers, but sometimes I get the feel that public school kind of takes away your creativity. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good writers that go to public school. But still, I know I wouldn't have the time or motivation if I went to public school.

I second Pretty Crazy... Public school can ruin creativity. At the same time, I think the answer is that yes, I would be able to write. But would I want to do it as much, or be any good at it? Probably not. Writing is one of those things that requires a lot of practice, something I wouldn't have as much time for in public school.

I went to public school for a while, only to realize that they wanted nothing from you but to say what they wanted to hear. Put your heart and soul into an assignment and give your honest take on it? C+ at best. Write what they've told you is "the right way"? An A or B, with no thought or originality involved. As Mark Twain said, "I never let my schooling interfere with my education."

Well, I went to a public school until this year, and it's not too much different other than that you get more writing time here. It is easier...but I don't think it would phase my writing if I was still in public school.

it's like storyweaver13 and pretty crazy said, there are plenty for creative kids in the schools but they don't know HOW to be creative.
i don't know about you but a LOT of my childhood learning was dressing up in costumes and running around outside using our imaginations, it really taught me so much and i think that mostly what it taught me was how to do things and be creative on my own i don't need a text book and paid teacher to learn stuff! all i need is curiosity and Google

Sarcasm aside, I do actually disagree with what a lot of you are saying. I'm not saying that homeschooling is bad and that public schooling is amazing. It's far from it. In fact, I'd like to be homeschooled. I understand where you're coming from when you say that you wouldn't write as much or as well as you do if you went to public school. You do have more time to write, that's true.
Adeera, you said that public school kids don't know how to be creative. That's a tad bit ignorant, if you ask me. I noticed in another thread that you mentioned never going to public school. Trust me, there are loads of creative things to be done in school. If you saw some of the teachers and students in my school... you would totally understand. What you said about learning by dressing up in costumes and running around outside to be creative, you can still do that if you go to a public school. It's not like you're locked in the place forever. You do come home, you know.
I agree with what Sarah Pass said. Yes, the way you write does depend on your education. How creative you are has nothing to do with education. This is a matter of opinion, but if you ask me, you're either born creative or you're not. Creativity isn't something that you can teach. Whether you learn at home or learn in a school with other students has nothing to do with it.

@ skins haha darling you have caught me at my weak point, i'm sooo judgmental about sooo many people and i need to stop. what you are saying is very true i do know a lot for public schoolers that are amazing and creatively talented kids.
and i have actually been in a school a lot when i was taking drivers ED and i'll admit it was scary. haha i probably sound like a pansy.
but no what you are saying is totally the truth.

I believe that you could write in school, and I know that people do. Myself being raised as a shut in I doubt I could do it, odds are I'd kill myself from dealing with the stress and horrible cliques. I believe that school adds popularity to cliché writing, just look at popular music, and Twilight. There can be a fair amount of originality, but for the most part I don't think anything that isn't cliché comes out of the school systems.

'Tis true, there are such things as art and music classes. And surely things improve once you're taught there's more to writing than five-paragraph essays. (Those were the bane of my elementary-school existence, once I went to public school.)
It's also true that God gives gives where and as He wills. Some people who can't paint a mural may see math as a beautiful artform. -
I think I'd find more time to write, but I would spend that time doing other things.
As my life is right now I have very little time to write, but when I get a chance I do it.
If I went to school I'd have more time to write, but I'd be interested in all sorts of time wasting games that I'd do instead.
So my answer is almost a yes, but still a no.
