Pardon my ignorance, but how does roleplay work exactly?

It's fine! We're all beginners at some point in time. You come up with an original character, or (in the case of this forum) a character from the series. Some require you to fill out a little thing about your character, or you just start. Some good examples are in the Character Chit-Chat section of the Storybooks forums. I hoped that helped!

*Talonstar pads out of her den* Greetings, traveler. tell me, why have you come to EagleClan?

*Spiderheart dips his head* Greetings, Talonstar. My Clanmates and I have come here searching for a rare herb. We ran out weeks ago and it's the only good cure for the infection settling upon our Leader, Oakstar. Do you happen to know where some is? It's oil from a tea tree and we need it to get rid of the fungus growing on his paws and nose.

Um...well really prey has decreased, then there's always greencough and whitecough.
