“Here, can you hold him?” Valmond said, handing Aporia to Lylatt and placing his shoulder bag by Lylatt’s leg. “I’ll go clean up my mess before we can go. Then you can meet my teammates, and we can talk about this contract!”
Lylatt gently took the recovering robot. “Sure thing.” he gazed down at Aporia while Valmond began to speed-walk around the place to inspect — and likely un-summon his defeated helpers. “You okay?”
“I would say I’ve been through worse, but you do hit pretty hard.” Aporia said in return. “I don’t want to come off as dismissive.”
“Your consideration is quite appreciated.”
Aporia nodded, before following his gaze, looking at Valmond. “...he’s writing, you know. He’s been into the… the ‘mystique of summoning’, he says, for quite some time. It’s nice to have you around and make him more excited.”
“Has he been writing down chants?”
“Sometimes. His current scene’s more of a song.”
Lylatt smiled. “Does he have it on him? I can’t say I’m not curious.”
Aporia gazed back to Lylatt. “Sure.” then, pointed at the bag below. “Biggest book, main pouch. Don’t worry, we chatted about it before coming here. You’re allowed.”
“I figured.” Lylatt crouched to open the bag and rummage through it to get the book. “You strike me as the rule keeper of your duo.”
Aporia smiled. “You got that right.”
Lylatt flipped to the page marked by a bookmark and began his read.
A silence, as heavy as the previous noise, fell upon the assembly, and they waited... Waited... Waited… Until finally, a new sound broke the short-lived silence. It was, unmistakably, the sound of a determined stride climbing a set of stairs. It was followed by thousands of other steps, stomping behind the first one like so many hammers smashing the ground with all their might.Rattle, big... black… bones…!
In the dan… ger... zone…!
There's a rum… blin'... groan... down below...!
The doors slowly opened, with a rattling noise impossible for anyone to hear, for it had been immediately covered by the tune that invaded the air, as if tearing itself free from the door's imprisonment.
There's a big... dark... town…!
It's a place... I've... found…!
There's a world, going on, UNDERGROUND!
The voices united as the word “underground” hit the assembly like a roaring thunder, forcing time to flow back into the room, bodies to gasp for their forgotten air, and minds to fear for what was to come. The knights standing in front of the door fell back in a common movement of retreat, just in time to witness the procession.
They're alive…! They're awake…!
While the rest, of the world, is asleep…!
A parade of strange beings came out of the Dungeon of Blade Tower, walking like automatons. They were golems of metal, and though they looked humanoid – with arms, legs and shiny blue eyes stuck on intimidating faces – they were all shaped like weapons just barely salvaged from a massive junkyard.
Below the mine... shaft… roads…!
It will all… un… fold…!
There's a world, going on, UNDERGROUND!
Sword-shaped, ax-shaped, spear-shaped, no matter their size and state, all the metallic beings regained a swift motion and stomped the ground like one man just as the word “underground” thundered again, the menacing shout throwing a wave of air at the frozen assembly before them. Then, as suddenly as they had shouted, they regained a calm demeanor and stepped aside, letting the path leading towards the opened door free. More steps stomped the ground as a new verse of the sinister tune invaded the air yet again.
All the roots...hang… down…!
Swing from town… to… town…!
They are mar...ching around... down under your boots!
Only the shadowy newcomers near the gates were singing this time, while the bulk of the procession were whispering, thus allowing the silent knights to listen for one of the louder voices as new robots presented themselves, moving in sync with the rest.
All the trucks… un… load…!
Beyond the go...pher… Holes…!
As if holding their breath, every member of the metallic parade stopped singing, just as what seemed to be their leader stopped in the middle of the room. Although it had the same shiny blue eyes as the others, its appearance was that of a female robotized being, her head forming a V-shaped, fiery red crown while her body looked like an over-sized dress of the same color, covering the wheels she used to move herself. She stared at the assembly of warriors before her, her metallic pulpy lips stretching into a fearsome smile.
And as the ponderous silence dragged on, a long-eared figure jumped out from the female robot's back, swiftly landing on the ground and raising a fist in the air. Various scabbards and weapons covered his unfamiliar red attire, but still: it was unmistakably him.
“There's a world… going on... UNDERGROUND!” Anolk shouted, concluding the tune. The robots behind him sprung up, raising their fist in the air in a similar fashion.
“THERE'S A WORLD, GOING ON, UNDERGROUND!”
They stomped the ground one last time as they repeated the sentence, then finally, as if they had just noticed them, they locked their shiny blue eyes in those of the assembly of intimidated warriors.
One of them carefully approached: a bird-headed humanoid with razor-sharp wings decorating the arms. “I am Falgor of the Blade Knights.” she declared in a clear voice. “State your name and alignment.”
Anolk let a cheerful smile decorate his face. “I’m Anolk!” he exclaimed. “My alignment is Leezgale, and any place with people in need!” he took a step forward, locking his gaze into Falgor’s. “I did what you asked. I went at the bottom of your dungeon and closed its doors! But I did have some help with that.”
“Remember us, my sweeties?” the female red robot intervened, rolling across the cave’s ground to reach Anolk’s side. “I am Lady Smiteve, and we are the Bukkies. The sentient weapons you used, then abandoned in favor of your shining new armors. You left us to rot in this horrible dungeon, confused and hateful, hoping that we’d destroy the boy you sent there.” a devious smile appeared on Smiteve’s metallic lips. “Though I assume teaming up with him to crawl our way back up here, united by our ancestral chant… That wasn’t a part of your plans, was it?” she gazed at Anolk. “Go, my child. We’ll teach our ‘caretakers’ a lesson. Go get your Wind Ring back.”
