Yo.
Spoiler
“One sec!” Valmond said, before elegantly draping himself with the midnight blue cloak he’d place just atop of his big shoulder bag. “Okay, we good.”
Lylatt cocked his head to the side. “Concealing movements?”
“Yup!” a grin. “But let’s see if you figure out my Phantom Cloak’s other functions.”
A fair point. Valmond would make a poor magician if he revealed all of his tricks before a battle he intended to use them in. “I usually manage,” Lylatt replied modestly, “But I’m sure you’ll surprise me.” he picked up a pebble before him, and held it in front of Valmond. “Once this thrown pebble hits the ground, we begin. Good enough?”
“Good luck, have fun?”
Lylatt smiled behind his reptilian-shaped helmet. “Good luck. Have fun.” he watched as Valmond, never breaking eye contact, walked backwards until he was a fair distance away. Then, he stopped, and flashed a thumbs-up as Aporia came to float next to him.
Alright, then. Lylatt thought. Let’s begin. He couldn’t stop his smile from growing just a bit larger. It would be quite exciting to discover what these two were capable of. With that in mind, Lylatt threw the pebble far above himself, then chanted:“The First Mark — with separation shines individuality”
Causing all four of his shield’s neon green eyes to shine. Soon after, Lylatt felt his four weapons appear at their usual spots: the Vile Venospada blade sheathed at his back, the duo of guns Obsidian Obelisk and Golden Gryphon in two holsters placed side by side at his right hip, and the Thunderstrike Tempest bomb hidden behind his armor’s waist cape, next to his satchel. These — alongside the fifth asset still resting behind his back — would more than suffice for this test.
The pebble hit the ground.
“Codename: Lockshots!” Valmond shouted, tapping his shoes to the ground one after the other.
Lylatt had no time to wonder what that motion was for: he watched as Aporia flew to his left. Electricity gathered around the protruding horns between his antennae and he shot a bullet of lightning, which Lylatt — having anticipated the projectile — swiftly dodged. In the same second, Lylatt drew his Obsidian Obelisk (a vaguely pistol-shaped six-shooter made of black stone fragments held together by solidified purple energy) and fired.
The first shot hit Aporia’s forehead just as he fired one of his own.
The second grazed him as Aporia moved aside, prompting Lylatt to do the same as he fired a third one, which missed.
Although he found himself locked in a gunslinger’s bout, Lylatt noticed through peripheral vision that Valmond had slapped something behind his previously named Phantom Cloak before ejecting it from his body using electricity — could he simply conjure it? Did he somehow whisper a chant? — leading it to float and reform in mid-air.
Aporia is an offensive support unit, Lylatt noted mentally, and Valmond provides the setup. I need more info. Lylatt lifted his shield and, faster than Aporia’s next shot, it generated a green-colored force field all around him. At the same time, pink grew from Lylatt’s body and exploded outward, engulfing both Aporia and Valmond with absolutely no damage for either. Of course, neither of them knew of a pulse gauge: but Lylatt used the moment of hesitation they both had to, without any need to look away, from Aporia, obtain information on anything within the dome of light he’d just released as though it was a radar.
Valmond. His clothes, filled with hidden pockets. His bag, full of ball-shaped objects and other things Lylatt could not recognize. And among them, a big hammer-like item, with a spike and a ball atop the spike.
He has a palmastrel too? That’s a problem. Lylatt focused on other vital information with the speed of thought.
The cloak Valmond had removed stood now, right next to him. It was worn by some sort of humanoid of wind and lightning, and behind the cloak was what looked like a wind-up key — but it, too, was a palmastrel.
So he makes golems, elementals, or both, Lylatt thought. Is he using palmastrels as a power source?
With a blink, the moment ended, and the pulse gauge’s light vanished with it.
Lylatt moved his shield away when Aporia stopped shooting — was he assessing the situation? — as the same green glow suddenly arose from his armor instead. Lylatt swiftly put his gun back into his holster and, thanks to his energized armor, made an impossible leap, that blue light trailing behind him as he gripped his Vile Venospada and slashed forward. Unsurprisingly, Aporia (in spite of his visible surprise) just barely dodged out of the way.
Which Lylatt counted on.
Following the slash came a ghostly green glow, acting like an afterimage still sharp enough to cut Aporia just a little. Just enough to throw off his aim again.
Turning in mid-air, Lylatt sheathed his blade as fast as he took it before drawing his Obsidian Obelisk once more. He grinned behind his helmet as Aporia, having had his counterattack interrupted, immediately moved out of the gun’s line of fire.
Few things, in a fight, were as satisfying to Lylatt as training an enemy to react a certain way and then watch them do it.
As Aporia moved in a preemptive dodge, Lylatt rose his shield once more. But this time, as fast as the force field from before, the neon eyes on Lylatt’s Dread Defender shield lit up: then the giant mechanical turtle from Lylatt’s summoning simply appeared, holding its arm up the same way Lylatt did with his shield.
“Valmond!” Aporia shouted in obvious worry.
Fear filled Valmond’s eyes as Lylatt dashed forth alongside his golem of solid light, aiming for both Valmond and his creation. The latter gasped as his boots filled with electricity and, immediately after, he was out of the way.
Electric rollerskates. Lylatt mentally noted. Clever.
The cloaked creature, however, was simply not fast enough to avoid the strike. Lylatt’s shield collided with it, followed by a punch by Lylatt’s golem so powerful that the very ground beneath them all shook with the impact.
