The Secret Society of Bad Haircuts and Messed Up Eyebrows

PreviousNext

This isn't really the best thing I've ever written but I thought it was cute. There will be 3 parts and I have the Intro and part 1 done. It's probabley just going to be a short story. I apologize if it's too short. And I will appreciate your reviews.

Introduction

Patrick was the one with the too short buzz cut. Victoria was the one with the wannabe punk haircut and the over processed red highlights. Jodi’s hair was fine, except half her eyebrows were missing from what she calls “a shaving accident”. Derek had hair that looked like it belonged on a rooster instead of a teenage guy. That leaves me, Lola, who has hair that would look cute but since it flips out in all directions and barely touches my shoulders, I look like a man. Plus, my eyebrows are very funky looking, so that makes me undisputable leader of the Secret Society of Bad Haircuts and Messed Up Eyebrows.

It all started when our mothers took us for our annual haircuts and eyebrow fixings. We all went to the same place, only at different times. But, even though we went at different times, we all walked out of the salon looking exactly the same: like characters from the Nightmare Before Christmas. We all knew deep down in our hearts that the first day of school would be a nightmare.

Well, it wasn’t the worst day ever, because we met each other for the first time in the crowded lunch room of Avery High School and swore vengeance on the salon that ruined our self image; our pride. So, from that point on we became the inseparable secret society in which I lead. Together, we try to suffer through high school, a place where self image is as important as a test you take in Algebra 1. If you don’t pass, you can expect to be miserable for the rest of the year, or worse, your life.

Part 1

Leave it to Jodi to follow a guy she likes into the boy’s bathroom.

We all sat around a table in the crowded lunch room of Avery High School while Jodi relayed her humiliating moment.

“So wait, you said that you lost your glasses?” Patrick asked, while dipping a Granny Smith apple into some caramel.

“But you don’t have glasses.” I pointed out.

“No duh, Lola,” Jodi snapped, “That’s what makes it so embarrassing.”

“I thought the part about you trying to follow him into the stall was humiliating enough.” Victoria said through a mouthful of chips. Jodi stuck her tongue out at Victoria.

“Well, at least your bangs were covering up your eyebrows,” Derek said, “it would’ve been worse if he got a look at them. He probably would have died of fright.”

“Whatever, Rooster Boy.” Jodi said. I choked on some cherry soda as I tried not to laugh. Derek shot me a look across the table and I stopped. I hated his looks. They made me wet my pants.

“Well, Jodi, just be grateful that you’re not as unfortunate looking as your fellow friends.” I said reassuringly.

“Oh knock off the whole self pity thing, Lola. It makes me feel like I’m in therapy.” Patrick complained. I kicked him under the table. We finished the rest of our lunch in silence. I liked it best this way. Not, that I didn’t like my friends, I just liked reveling in their company more than actually talking to them. They didn’t mind either.

A shrill bell snapped me back to attention and my friends stood up to throw away the leftovers from their lunch. I stood up to join them.

“So, to class?” I asked.

“To class.” They answered in unison. We all walked in a line down the hallway, ignoring the mean comments. Who cared if we were blocking the whole hallway? At least my best friends and I were together.

I liked this. It talks about not caring about self image, I am big on that. And it is rather funny at the same time. jeep writing. I loved it and I like it at the same time. but I have one simple question. Where did you get the inspiration of the short story from?

Remember, a stranger once told you that the breeze here is something worth writing poems about.
