Ryan
Today is not going well, not only did I get to enjoy “Silver” and her crew’s attention, but also then I get to take Barbie to my father. The last thing I want to do is see my father especially when I should be in school. It’s something that can’t be helped I suppose though, because the stubborn girl needs someone to look at her damn head. The whole time I drive I glance over at her to make sure she’s ok. She just stares out the window, her eyes watching nothing in particular.
“I’m not a slut.”
“What?” I almost hit a car as she simply states this.
“Just saying.”
“Well I didn’t think you were.”
An awkward silence fills the car after that, and I reach up to turn the radio on. Nothing good is on, but it’s better than the emptiness. I’m not sure what I should say to her; after all I don’t talk to people if I don’t want to usually. Every time I glance over at her though I can see tears at the edge of her eyes, and I want to say something.
“Does your head hurt?”
“No.”
So much for conversation, now what?
I decide to just let her be, and drive the rest of the way quietly. When I finally pull into the parking lot I breath a sigh of relief. Getting out of the car is all I want, but I get out slowly so I don’t offend her. She does as well, and then she looks around.
“So, can we just go into the hospital when we’re supposed to be in school? Won’t we get in trouble?”
“As I pointed out earlier, you were skipping class so why are you so worried about getting in trouble?”
“Well it was my first time skipping class.”
As soon as she admits this to me I start laughing. Her face turns bright red, and she looks down in embarrassment. This makes me laugh harder, and it takes me a couple of minutes to regain control. Walking around the car, I put my hand on her shoulder and pat it like a concerned adult would.
“Welcome to being a teenager. If skipping class worries you, you might consider not being seen with me.”
She looks up at me, and I want to bite my tongue for what I just said. Even though she isn’t my type at all I’ll admit she’s a pretty. The “All American” kind of looks, more than likely to be runner up for homecoming queen if not homecoming queen herself. Half of me expects the cops to show up gun drawn on me for kidnapping or something.
“I don’t mind.”
Without answering her I move towards the building, hoping she’ll follow. When I hear the patting of her tennis shoes behind me I slow down a bit. She finally catches up with me and walks beside me, until we get to the building. Opening the door for her, she hesitates the walks in.
“Maybe you should lead, he’s your dad after all.”
“Yea, ok.”
I walk up to the nurses’ desk and smile. Jennifer, one of the older nurses, smiles and gets up to see what I need.
“Hey there, shouldn’t you be in school?”
“Seniors get a lot of free periods. My dad busy?”
“No, I think he’s free, you can go on back.”
“Thanks Jennifer, tell your husband I said hi.”
Without pausing to make sure Megan is behind me, I make my way down the hallways to where I know my father will be. When I see him, I pull my emotions back and start to go blank. His outfit, hair, everything are all the same as usual. Nothing out of place, it makes me want to move a piece of his hair to see if it’s naturally perfect or just so styled it won’t move.
“Father.”
He turns to me surprised, and folds his arms. Before I let him launch into a lecture on how I should be at school, I grab Megan’s hand and pull her forward so she’s in front of him. His face goes from one of disappointment to confusion.
“She got hurt at school. Our nurses suck. You’re a doctor. Look at her.” That’s all I say before I put distance between us.
Suddenly he goes from Father mode to doctor almost too quick to see. He asks her where she’s hurt and tells her to sit down. After she explains what happened to her head, he starts to examine her. I zone out trying to ignore the way he makes her laugh and talks so friendly with her. The doctor side of him is a side I never get to enjoy, but others all get to see. Of course it wasn’t his fault, and it’s not like it matters that much. Maybe it’s just the fact that Megan seems so happy talking to him while she looked close to crying around me. My father is everything I could never imagine to be, and things I’d rather not be as well though.
“Well you’re fine, it’s not too deep. You just need to be more careful, and keep this bandage on it. Even if it pulls your hair, remember to keep it on.”
“Ok thank you so much.”
“No problem. Ryan, can I talk to you?”
“Sorry but I have to get both of us back to school. I’ll talk to you later.”
Grabbing Megan by the hand I pull her away, and down the halls practically running until we reach the doors. That’s when I finally slow down, letting her catch her breath. A run turns into a walk, and slowly I make my way to the car. When we reach the car I realize that I’m still holding her hand, and let go.
“Sorry.”
She shakes her head and smiles a little as she goes around the side of the car. The blush on her face makes me nervous. If she starts to like me I’ll end up with yet another follower. The girls that usually follow me are the “emo” and gothic chicks, not girls like her. If she were to start hanging around me, then who knows how many other girls lonely like her would follow in suit. Pretty soon people would expect me to participate in things and talk.
No way in hell I’ll let that happen, especially my senior year. There’s no chance that I will go from being ignored to noticed again. That’s the last thing I want.
As I sit in the car she’s sitting there, seat belt already on. She’s looking at me expectantly, and I want to groan. Pretty girls are always get me when they don’t know they’re attractive. Innocent girls like Megan, drive me crazy without even knowing it.
“You mind?” I pull out my cigarettes and watch her face closely.
“No. Are we really going back to school?”
The way she doesn’t even hesitate makes me mad. A girl like her shouldn’t accept it so easily, and her question irritates me. I light my cig and take a long drag before looking at her. She’s still staring at me with the same expression on her face.
“We are not going back. You however, are going back.”
Starting the car, I see her mouth drop out of the corner of my eye. I’m half tempted to smile back at her but I instead I just pull out of the parking lot enjoying my cig. She turns towards me and just stares at me for a long time she does this until finally I look at her.
“What?”
“We are both going to school or we are both not.”
“Oh really? Who is the one driving? Who is the one that took you to the doctor?”
“I didn’t ask you to, plus you maybe driving but I will stay in the car until school is over if I have to.”
“Touché, fine what do you propose instead?”
“Well I can’t go home until after school is over…”
“Great.”
I don’t mean to be rude; the thought of spending the rest of the day with this girl is enough to make me want to go back to school. Almost enough, but not quite enough to go back. Of course that leaves a handful of options. I could take her out where of course people might see us, I can take her home and get her in trouble, or she could go home with me. The last option is the only one that sounds reasonable, except for the thought of her in my home makes me nervous. A girl I just met doesn’t need to be in my car, little lone my home. Most of my friends have barely been in my car, and none of them have seen the inside of my house.
“Well, I suppose I don’t have an option then. Would you like to come over to my house?”
“I don’t…” her voice trails off and once again I see her face get sad.
What’s wrong with her now?
“Hey that looks like our only option. So either you go back to school or my house. You decide.”
“I guess you’re house.”
Her face is blank now, and she stares out the window again. It reminds me of my father’s face when I was younger. Whenever we would visit my mother in the hospital his face would go blank, so blank that I was scared he was dead. Whatever made Megan do this had to be something I don’t and won’t understand probably. So I let her be, and turn the music up as I drive towards home. When I pull in I see her staring at my house, I’m not sure what she expected but surely not this. My mother loved this house and even though it’s old and so much work we still keep it.
“Welcome to my house I guess.”
She gets out of the car without a word, and follows me up to the door. Unlocking it I open the door and feel the burst of cool air as I let her by. The smell of something sweet like candy follows her. It’s extremely arousing for some reason, and I stand there for a moment collecting myself.
“Uh, are you um thirsty or anything?”
“Sure, what you got?”
I laugh and go into the kitchen with her trailing behind. Opening the fridge I let her inspect it. She sorts through and finally decides on sprite. I grab one as well, and a bag of chips. I’m not sure on what else to do so I just go to my room, man cave. It’s practically the only place that I go in my house. Turning on the T.V., I grab my xbox remote and sit down. Megan does the same, sitting down awkwardly.
“You play?”
“Play what?”
“Ha well do you play video games at all?”
“No.”
“Do you want to play or sit here for the next,” I glance at my phone, “ 2 hours?”
“Sure I’ll try.”
“Well you’re going to have to come sit over here to be able to see the screen you know. Don’t worry I don’t bite, well hard that is.” I laugh but she just nods and moves so she’s sitting next to me without being too close.
And I thought she might be attracted to me, ha what an idiot I am.
“I won’t go too hard on you so don’t worry.”
“Haha ok.”
