THE PURSUIT

In a dream of another world with no name and no door to enter, I am who I was in the real world, and I’m not alone. I’m never alone. This beast that chases me I almost cannot describe. He’s a monster and a man, and reason he knows not. He’s a terror so unfriendly, but his will is soon to be done. With eyes black as night he searched for me and with his fleshy blackened skin he hides well within the shadow. I know not why he seeks me or why he wants me dead, all I can do is run, flee from the terror of the unknown. Someday he’ll find me. One day he’ll loose his trap.

It’s a day of which escapes me. I’m tired and I’m hungry. Trapped inside a supermarket I quietly try to sneak some food to stem my satisfaction. Greed overtakes me and I grab an armful of assorted foods and run for the door before he finds me. The electric sliding glass doors open, but two guards stand right outside. They see me with the stolen food and before I can run a needle is in my side. Though my limbs grow limp my mind still wonders why the needle is in my side. Though this dream is so real, so many things may happen that never can be real.

It seems almost like an instant that the guards carelessly walk away and strength is back in my body. When they are finally far enough away I start to run once more from the supermarket. I no longer have the supplies, lost when I was carelessly stopped. I take a right and start to climb a hill which can hardly be called a hill. Rather it more like a cliff and the sides of the cliff are weak and crumble beneath my feet that struggle to keep traction on the deteriorating clay wall. I finally reach the top and grown all across the surface and even to the brim of the precipitous cliff are crops that seem to be carrots. As I try not to fall I start to tear up the crops grabbing at anything that will keep me from falling all the way back to the ground so many feet below me. The farmer of the property sees me tearing up his crops and he walks curiously closer to me like he had never seen a human being in his life. His side steps to a wench just to his left and hands the end to me so I can get up.

For all the time it takes to the wench to work and finally pull me up it didn’t make up for the anger that the farmer randomly lashed out at me once I finally had my feet firm on the ground. so once again I ran for I don’t know where and as I reached the first street I suddenly realized I was trying to find a abandoned home to hide in. near the end of the street I find one. Though I assume the house to be empty I ring the door bell and a young woman of maybe 22, five years older than me, opens the door. I start to leave seeing that the home is obviously still occupied, but the woman stops me by grabbing my hand.

“Wait,” she says. “Stay with us.”

Though I have never met the woman before I somehow know who she is, especially who she means by us. The woman takes me upstairs and I meet the second part to the group us. I’m in a tower that is somehow much taller than the home first made out to be. At the top another young girl who is my age (how I know that I don’t know) is lying on of three musty old couches in the 10x10 tower. Both girls are very pretty and though I have just met them I feel as though I’ve met them before, I feel a sort of… protectiveness for them. The older of the two (known to me as Alice) has short blonde hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. The younger girl (Danni) has long brown hair and brown eyes.

It was sudden when Lust came over my eyes and I didn’t know what to do. It was quite disappointing when I heard the howls and growls. I was trying to get to know us. Danni is not related to Alice but together they are like sisters. Why they were hiding out in an abandoned home I didn’t know. All I knew was that I couldn’t shake the feeling that I knew them somehow.

Screams and crashes resound throughout the street below. Car sirens go off and growls rumble. I look out from the tower and beasts like dogs somehow are climbing up the telephone lines that for some reason are attached to the side of the tower. It’s now or never and I decide to risk my life and go out on the lines to knock off the beastly dogs. Without a sweat I walk out on the telephone lines like a tightrope walker and as I walk over their paws that somehow grip the lines they fall to the ground so far below and whimper as they hit the ground.

With all the dogs (who are the minions of The Beast) knocked off the lines I tightrope walk back into the tower and figure I should comfort the two girls, but I find they are not afraid. Suddenly things start to blur…

… and the day has changed once again. In a grocery store I walk beside Danni and Alice has gone off by herself to find some things of her own. As I look over at Danni I get a feeling that I seem to have a crush on her, but I fear for her safety so much more. in this dream I hardly know Danni or Alice but I’ve known them before, the same thing has happened before somehow. Did I go back in time? Is this real? Of course not! It’s a dream… but somehow it’s real. They don’t know that I’ve known them before. This is the first time I’ve met them, that they’ve met me.

I’ve been listening to Danni go on and on about things she likes to do like:

“When I was little I would always play with those things, oh what were they called...? Light Brights!”

“Yeah, I’ve always liked the color blue, but red is certainly more serene.”

“I’ve been in this city a while now. Why we hide out in old homes I don’t know, but Alice seems to think it is a good thing to do.”

“I think it was last year that I dated this guy that was about your age… actually he did kind of look like you too… huh.”

We now are just about to leave the grocery store and Alice is paying for all the groceries that we’ll need for a few weeks. I’ve been trying to convince them both that they need to runaway with me, that because I am with them I have put them in a lot of danger, but neither of them seems afraid.

“I know you’re not scared!” I say to Danni agitation finally getting to me. “You may not be scared, but I am. This beast is a terror, though I have never seen his eyes. This beast is a mystery, though everyone knows his name. he’s brutal, he’s a monster, and he is coming. Though you never fear The Beast I do. I’ve been thinking, trying to remember this déjà vu that seems to have overtaken me, and I know this has happened before!” …

… Another day gone by and I feel this dream is reaching its end. I feel The Beast is growing closer and closer by the minute. I can hear is deep growl, I can feel his eyes have found me. Danni and Alice are about to drive away with two men I don’t know. Envy grasps my heart and I run to jump in the red convertible. They look they have that tells me they don’t want me there breaks my heart. Before they can say anything I give my final speech, I can see him chasing behind me:

“I finally remember, what seemed like a dream surely happened before. You died, I lived, I ran, it replays. Can’t you see? It’s me he wants. It’s me he is after. He’ll never stop. Nothing, not even Time itself can stop him from taking me in his grasp. First you died, then I lived. Now I die, now you live.”

I jump from the car but I’m not hurt when I land. I look up from the ground and he charges for me. He’s eyes are black as night, his skin hides him within the shadow. He’s a monster and a man, and reason he knows not. He’s a terror so unfriendly, but his will is soon to be done. Who is he? He is my doom. He is my destruction. He’s me.

I have to agree with what Zia is saying. I thought you had a wonderful story but it just made no sense. I don't think you should have put the very first sentence twice. I was very mysterious and suspenseful but I seemed to me like it was all over the place. I was really suprised at the ending I didn't expect that at all. Some of the story itself just seemed to be put in at random like you were just writing anything that popped into your head. I'm sorry I'm a little harsh. I did think you had a great idea flowing here within the story but you could have worded it different to where it made sense to the reader. Good job, Good luck, and Keep writing :)

Hi there! Lucrezia here for a review.

This was certainly interesting, and stylistic. The poetic wording was really lovely. It flowed together and that ending—"He's me"—is suburb (and perfect use of bold italics, as well).

But it was also confusing. No, wait, confusing is an understatement. For the most part, this made no sense. And yes, I'm sure to you it makes perfect sense, but to the reader... well, suffice it to say that it was hard to keep up and had me scratching my head several times and wondering, "What the heck is happening?"

I suspect it's the confusing way this story is told—so fast-paced, so senseless, so stylistic—that has scared off reviewers. Which is not to say this piece is bad; it's most certainly not. In fact, despite the confusion, this piece was extraordinarily well-written and sometimes the best stories are the ones that don't make sense. ;)

As I said before, the wording was a delight. It flowed together nicely. And it was so richly written, like poetry, that it really did seem downright beautiful at times. If impossible to understand.

Here are some nitpicks for your enjoyment:

For all the time it takes to the wench to work and finally pull me up it didn’t make up for the anger that the farmer randomly lashed out at me once I finally had my feet firm on the ground. so once again I ran for I don’t know where and as I reached the first street I suddenly realized I was trying to find a abandoned home to hide in. near the end of the street I find one.

Lack of punctuation in this, lack of capitalization, and... well, frankly, it doesn't make much sense. I got lost reading it and had another one of those scratching-my-head moments.

is lying on of three musty old couches

What?

they fall to the ground so far below and whimper as they hit the ground.

"Ground" is repetitive.

though everyone knows his name. he’s brutal

The H in "he's" should be capitalized.

I can hear is deep growl

Perhaps you mean his deep growl?

They look they have

The look they have?

He’s eyes are black as night

"His," not "he's."

Overall, I would say I love the poetical flow of your writing style. It's lovely to read, truly it is. I only wish you could've used that style on a piece that made more sense. :-/

Nonetheless, this is not an easy thing to write, and it's the kind of style few can master. For that alone, I applaud you. And like I said—this is a good piece. Just confusing. :)

Well done and keep up the good work!

Should we not walk? On our feet? The ones I now have again? I do like my feet. They are befittingly perambulatory.
