Before we part ways

In A stranger you know

PreviousNext

Lily came over to me with her smile all over her face and asked: “Wanna walk together?”. I was still packing up after school had just ended. I didn’t have a reason to say no, so I said: “Sure.”

Just like that, here we are, walking side-by-side down the pedestrian street. We’d eventually part ways at the city centre, homeward, but for now, we’re just taking our time and having a little chat as we go.

Lily is a small girl with brown eyes so big, it almost looked as though she was from a Disney movie. She started at my school about two weeks ago. This is the first time she ever interacted with me though, except for a dull “Hulloo” on her first day here. She looked quite boring, to be honest.

I wonder what this is for now. She probably just wanted to make me a technically-a-friend of hers by having a chat. Right now we’re having this school conversation, which she initiated.

“I’ve got to do my biology presentation about the characteristics and behaviours of dung beetles. What could be more boring?” she remarks.

“Well, my presentation,” I say. “‘Cause it’s going to be about the reproduction of electric eels.” I honestly thought the topic itself was quite funny, but Lily doesn’t look like she’s amused at all, so she just keeps looking forward towards the pedestrian street, which is getting busier every step we take.

This old couple just walked past us, and they seemed to have found the sight of me and Lily quite amusing. I wonder what they could’ve possibly thought. Maybe they took it that we were actually a couple, and were entertained by how much of a funny couple we made. I can imagine it myself: a tall, handsome guy and a tiny, slightly-above-average girl next to him; Funny indeed!

It’s autumn. Leaves, orange like pumpkins, are slowly falling from the silver birches that outlined the street, and piling up on the floor. Lily and I have finally reached the heart of the city, and we have to go our separate ways now. I turn towards Lily and look at her face. I can see her big brown eyes looking directly into my own eyes. Her face is again filled with that beaming smile.

“Okay. Goodbye! See you tomorrow!” she says.

Before I can open my mouth, a strong gust of wind goes whooshing past us. Lily’s hair gets caught up in the wind, and she closes her eyes to make sure nothing gets in them. Once the wind is gone, she opens her eyes.

“I must’ve looked silly”, she confesses, looking a bit embarrassed but smiling nonetheless.

I smile. I wish her goodbye, and turn away to continue on my way.

As I walk through the crowd, I take out my phone and look at my face in the selfie camera. “Funny”, I think. I have blushed.

My mind flies back to the moment when the wind was blowing past me and Lily. Her dark, shiny hair was waving in the wind, kind of like a fluttering bird. When she opened her eyes again after the wind had died away, her big brown eyes, they looked alive, even more alive than they used to be.

And I remember that feeling I got in my heart just right then: it was just like a tiny little electric current passing by and lasted just for a moment. Maybe I should have talked about it, only I wasn’t sure.

Hello there! I just popped by to say, I absolutely enjoied this adorable story! I have such a soft spot for young romance, especially one that starts out with an unlikely pairing slowly realizing what they like about each other; so so sweet! <3 I love how the main character starts out skeptical about Lily, even believing her to be a bit boring, before noticing tiny things about her that catches his attention. I love the scenery details as well, like the elderly couple walking by, and the descriptions of the wind as it blows by, it's all rather beautiful! I think the only thing I noticed was the possible typo "gung beetles" when perhaps you meant "dung beetles," but I could be wrong ^^ I can't wait to see what else you come up with! Keep up the amazing work!!

Heyy! Wow, I'm so glad to hear you 'absolutely enjoyed' this story! You have got the idea I was trying to express through the story.
And you're also right about the typo. What was I thinking when I wrote 'gung beetles'! XD
I'd be glad keep you engaged with more stories!
Until then <3...

Wow, quite interesting way to write about a small incident. I like how not so much happened, but still the characters feel like real people. I wish I could replicate this thing in my stories as well.

I found this very cute! I can very much relate to the small 'Hello's' you give to people at a new school, and the wanting to make friends. I wonder why the older couple was staring? I would think it was because Lily and MC reminded them of when they were younger! Like I said this was very cute, I loved your writing! I hope that you will make more of these two! And welcome to YWS!! I'm new here too!!

Woah!! Thank u! This is actually the first time I ever published something I wrote, so someone having found it 'very cute' already is something to be proud of. I like that you tried to interpret the story too!
More stories are coming up and maybe also a sequel to this story someday, so let's look forward to that <3!

THat was interesting. Now I want to know what happens next! Please keep up the good work. I wonder what's different about lilly... I also am wondering why the old people were staring.

Hii, it's really nice to hear that this story made you curious! I was thinking about just leaving the rest for reader's imagination, but maybe I should continue the story someday :)
