Naenia’s wish 🌼🌫️

PreviousNext

*This story is underneath my folder titled “Naenia and the dandelion”. Gacha Club character designs are under my forum titled “My character designs<33[2]”. Enjoy!*

Naenia noticed a single dandelion in the bright green grass, the yellow sunlight blossom, the one flower she could make a wish on.

Her friends told Naenia that dandelions weren’t flowers, but weeds. At the end of the day, who cared? A pretty plant was still a pretty plant.

Naenia plucked the dandelion from the ground and made the wish to go to a magical world of endless possibilities.

The dandelion opened to reveal…sharp, white, pointy teeth?! But…dandelions weren’t supposed to have teeth!

Naenia found that she couldn’t let go of the dandelion, either. It grew long, grass green veins on her arm, bringing her closer to its mouth, to her death, to…

Teeth digging into her skin.

Just like that, the child was gone.

Hey, creeperfeverdreams! This is Alex, dropping by with a review. Let's dive right in.

Naenia is a such a unique and lovely name I must point out, perfect for a sweet young girl. The title reveals that she wishes something, inevitably invoking a slight curiosity in the reader's mind about what it is. It acts as such a great subtle but effective hoom to pull the reader in, very compelling!

The first line is so amusing to read. My mind is overcome with a billion questions at once like- why is there just one dandelion? Truly, it's a strange mystery, not usually observed in nature. Dandelions are usually known to blossom in bunch but for some very specific reason, this one stands alone. This one has nothing special otherwise, but It's isolated existence makes it so fascinating to me. I can't help but wonder if it's symbol of value- be in a bunch and you're no special, stand away from the crowd and you begin to amaze. In a way, it's even poetic. A single dandelion also demands precision, warning Naenia that she can't up blowing it, or her wish shall go ungranted forever. There is no room for error. In a way, it renders a life lesson that once things are done, they can't be taken back. So at this moment in time, the dandelion is her teacher, preparing her for the reality of how the world works. Numerous possibilities arise in the head about what her wish might be, but they're all pure mere speculation. Also, this piece reminded me of the song 'Dandelions' by Ruth B., about a girl wishing on multiple dandelions for her crush to be hers. It resonates with your work roughly but the details vary as here, there is a single dandelion and the wish being asked is unclear.

The second line is so surprisingly thought provoking! What really seperates a flower from a weed. The obvious answer would be commercial value, beauty and use to humans, but all of it sounds so shallow when you say it out aloud. The reader realises that it's actually just a matter of perception, rooted in human selfishness and tendency to view nature's elements as mere tools that objectively benefit us in some way.

The reader is also introduced to the unique perspective of our protagonist, Naenia. She is not bound by public perception, as she owns her different opinion with pride. She's not easy to influence and has thoughts of her own, even if the majority consider them unconventional. We see she has an equalising outlook towards all plants being beautiful, irrespective of the price tag they bear. Her naivity is evident, as she pays no need to complex matters, what she finds pretty simply is. Her character is so refreshing, sending a message to not overcomplicate things and to stand by our opinions, even when they differ from that of others. She isn't desperate to fit in and will not change herself for it. Instead, she flaunted her varied perspective to things in general, a little like that single dandelion- as independent as she is.

In the end of the day,

I believe the phrasing here was a little off, a simple preposition mistake. 'At' works a lot better than 'in' here, as in the phrase.

Spooky! This twist really came out of the blue. The closest reality gets to it is insectivorous plants but literal teeths and out of an unsuspecting dandelion is nothing less than a literal nightmare!

Next thing we know, it's even held Naenia in her place now, making escape impossible. It almost does sound like plant predation. How the pitcher closes its lid and then secrets juices to digest its prey. I'm getting somewhat similiar vibes here, it's not looking good for our protagonist, that for certain.

Teeth digging into her skin.

Typical vampire behaviour! (like your former username lol)
This was the most distrubing part of the attack of the dandelion though. Appearance of teeth, you could convince yourself it's just for show- like all bark no bite you know. The entangling veins, just maybeeee accelerated growth. But when the teeth finally dig, all your excuses to calm yourself go down the drain.

Just like that, the child was gone.

I like how differently the closing line can be interpreted, by varying readers. It's vague and best and that's what makes it a cliffhanger. Has the dandelion engulfed Naenia? Plausible but wouldn't be my personal guess.

Why does it feel like it was might've been just a very scary way to teleport Naenia to the world she asked for, in her wish. It could be a twisted idea for a portal. Afterall, she did wish for a magical world with endless possibilities, so this was a fitting wild way to take her to it. A bit of a stretch of a theory, I'm aware. But that's what makes it so interesting to contemplate.

Overall this was a rather short piece, but I genuinely think there's so much to read between the lines here. Because if you think that the words are too few, you're clearly not looking well enough! It's amusing from the beginning, in an explicable way. Then it takes a sudden turn to become uncanny instead. There's a hint horror, like most of your other stories so I'm guessing that's the theme where you feel most at home. It was such a riveting read, I had a great time reviewing it. Hope I get to read and review some more of your works very soon.

Regards
Alex

I%u2019m glad you enjoyed this. I feel like I need to add more lore to this story, but I am very glad you had fun reading this. :>

I'm sure that'd make this already great piece shine even brighter! But even now, it stands strong as a good read to make one ponder deeply about what it's suggesting beyond the surface. You've done a fabulous job, keep it up!

Hey vampricone! I enjoyed this short story; it was quick, but it had a neat twist. I'm curious to see how you develop this story and world, if you do!

Her friends told Naenia that dandelions weren’t flowers, but weeds. In the end of the day, who cared? A pretty plant was still a pretty plant.

Y e s, I completely agree. My favorite flower is technically a weed, actually (bermuda buttercup, or oxalis pes-caprae) ;)

Naenia plucked the dandelion from the ground and made the wish to go to a magical world of endless possibilities.

Interesting wish! I would love some backstory on why she makes this wish. She seems to have friends, or are they not true friends? What makes her feel like this world does not have endless possibilities? And does she take any time to think about the wish, or is this something she's thought about before and so something she decides quickly, or is this just the first thing that popped into her mind?

The dandelion opened to reveal…sharp, white, pointy teeth?! But…dandelions weren’t supposed to have teeth!

o.o Now that's a shocking reveal... I find twists that give an unexpected attribute to the mundane, like this one, so fun. :3

Just like that, the child was gone.

Oookay... I wonder if she was transported to some different world, or if she was just consumed... >.>

Alright, this story is pretty short, so I'll try to give some overall suggestions as well. I think slipping in some details on Naenia's appearance would be lovely to help the reader visualize what she looks like. For descriptions, I also think worldbuilding-specific comparisons are amazing. In this case, perhaps "envy green" could be replaced with "green as the grass" since the grass was established as being bright green before? This is completely optional and probably a weak example, but just something to keep in mind for the future, maybe? Perhaps a better example would be if Naenia is alive and encounters something or someone that betrays her in the future. Then, she could describe it as "treacherous as a dandelion". Anyways, just some thoughts! Thanks for sharing this, and I hope you have a wonderful day/night! =D

That's how we should measure our lives. Not in distance traveled, or time passed, or worlds conquered, but in moments... and the rush of joy—of grace—that exists within them.
