I wake up feeling hazy
Bad decisions I made the night before screaming at me like an alarm clock
It woke me up
The pain woke me up
Isn't it ironic
The thing that put me to sleep is the thing that I woke up to,
The thing that I first registered,
Pain
I look down to my arm
The smell of copper, metal and steel making incredible sense,
I didn't mean to do it
I didn't want to do it
I promised I wouldn't do it
But like a promise is made
It is broken
Irrationally,
Irresponsibly,
Impulsively,
I wasn't thinking when I made the promise
I wasn't thinking when I broke the promise
All I wanted to do was to not think
Yet,
Here I lay awake
And all I have left to do is to think
So I promise,
I won't do it again.

Hey! I loved the rawness and straightforwardness of this poem. The feelings described in the poem are very relatable, especially the one about waking up to the aftermath of a drunk night.
I particularly like how the author personifies the alarm clock, it shows the pain already caused by the night of drinking. The conflict between not wanting to think and thinking nonetheless really resonated with me, as drinking often does leave us with thoughts we would like to forget.
The repetition of âI didnât mean to,â and âI promiseâ is also a nice touch, it creates a sense of circularity which helps the poem flow better
The return to the titular phrase in the closing couplet is also very fitting, as it makes the final promise seem simple, yet, in context, it is obviously not. This poem feels very sincere and relatable, not self indulgent at all. Lovely work! <3
