The who

PreviousNext

It was a scorching sunny day. I’ve been pretty uncomfortable to write my exam with all the perspiration due to the heat. It was too hard to solve all the questions in my accounts paper. There I was minding my own business. But suddenly I went blank; I was suddenly at peace. :why?: cos I just saw something which led me to a possibility that it may not even be a human. It was just too mesmerizing. Finally I arrived at a conclusion that it was a girl, a very gorgeous one too. I couldn’t take my eyes off her. It had never happened before. Because I’m not the kind of a guy who takes an extra second to admire a girl. But all my personal ego’s went out the window. This was the time my brain got switched off. Something else took over. It was the stupid heart that took over me. It was the cruelest substitute to a brain; which I came to learn later. Anyway. There she was writing her crappy math exam. I could see her all tensed and she just kept fiddling her short ebony hair. I have now spent half an hour just looking at her. Now I look at my paper and it’s blank. But somehow I just didn’t seem to care about it. But I still made time to finish my exam quickly and spent the rest of the time admiring her.it was too late when it struck me; that my actions can be justified as that of a stalker. I didn’t care about it. The only thing I cared for was to live this particular moment as long as I possibly can. But it was too late. The villain rang and sent out it’s minions to collect the answer sheets and broke my moment. : Today I try my very best to forget that day but fail every time. I should’ve known. With such beauty come great disappointments. Anyway: The next day I enquired a mutual friend of her and mine. “She’s taken” he said. I tried my very best not to kneel on the floor, clasp my hands, cover my face and break into tears cos that would reveal my emotions for her in front of my friend. It turned out to be one of the longest days of life. I just couldn’t get a wink of sleep.

One day I’m the happiest man on earth, the very next facing the worst plight of my whole life. None the less I learned to hide my feelings for her. But my stupid heart wanted to get to know her more. So I did. I was her secret admirer. I used the mutual friend as pigeon messenger. It turned out to be a very good idea. I gave one chocolate every day to the pigeon to be given to her. It went on for a while until she got pissed about the chocolates and wanted it to stop. My frail heart burst an artery. But I still didn’t give up. Inside the chocolate wrapper I placed a paper which read” Never doubt the trusted one; never trust the doubted one”. Things seemed to calm down.

Farewell came. The pigeon challenged me to reveal to her that I was her secret admirer. I somehow mustered up the courage to get her a gift. A small ceramic cup with a small dog looking out of it. Everything was set for me to give her the present. But I failed miserably so I asked the pigeon to give the gift tomorrow and to maintain the anonymity. The most awaited next day came. I asked the pigeon about the gift and it had been delivered and she liked it. I was so happy. When I was crossing the steps someone called out my name. It was her. She said “Thank you”. I said “What for?” Out came the deadly reply “For the GIFT” I enquired her, since when she had known that the secret admirer was me. “From the very beginning” she said. Turns out that the pigeon has blabbed everything from day 1. I said “You’re welcome. See you later. I just need to kill a pigeon”. While I was walking towards the pigeon to murder it and stage it as an accident. Something struck my mind.so far I looked at her like a complete stranger thinking I had the upper hand of being anonymous but now I had acted like a fool whenever she was around me. It was just embarrassing now that I think of It.: how could I’ve been so blind and foolish:  I changed my mind about killing the pigeon as it was my friend.

Days passed.I got her mobile number from the pigeon without her knowledge. I texted her with the same saying I gave her in that chocolate wrapper. She recognized that it was me. We started chatting that day and we’ve been chatting for three years and now she is my best friend. We always laugh when we talk about how I introduced myself, “Creepy and charming” she said. Till date I never told her about my love for her, though she was in and out at relationships with a guy. Every time I tell this story to someone they ask “Why haven’t you told her yet?”  I quote” She was lightning and I was thunder, the timing was always slightly off”. As years passed I think it’s best to leave things as they are between me and her which is platonic. This is the end my love story. . . . OR IS IT???

Hey, Will here, for a review of your short story.

I wanted to give you a fair chance and give you a better, more in-depth review of your work. It isn't really fair when you see other people getting page long reviews and you just got two small, harsh, cheap reviews. I'm here to fix that!

In my reviews, I usually split it up into nitpicks, plot development, and then an overall sort of ending to it. Hope you enjoy it :)

Image

Nitpicks:

Spoiler
Alright, the first thing I want to talk about is tense, and how you use it. In your story, you change tense a few times, which isn't good for the reader. It confuses them, especially at the end when you reveal that you were re-telling the story from 3 years after it actually happened.

It's kind of hard to explain, but in the first paragraph, you are present tense. You are writing things like, There I was minding my own business.

But then in your second paragraph, you write like this: I gave one chocolate every day to the pigeon to be given to her.

That's a prime example of tense changing. If you were to write the second phrase in present tense, instead of gave one chocolate every day it would be give one chocolate every day.

It's just a one-word difference really.

Now I'll quote some real nitpicks and fix them up for you.

There I was minding my own business. But suddenly I went blank; I was suddenly at peace.

This part of the paragraph is very confusing. I think if you re-structure it, it could become clearer to the audience as in what you are trying to say. And what does I was suddenly at peace mean?

There I was, minding my own business. But when suddenly I went blank; I was suddenly at peace.

:why?: cos I just saw something which led me to a possibility that it may not even be a human. It was just too mesmerizing.

I know what you are trying to say - that the MC thinks the girl is so beautiful that it's not even human, right? Again, rephrase it. And never, EVER use the word 'cos.' Also, what is up with the colons before and after words?

:why?: cos I just saw something so mesmerizing which led me to a possibility that it may not even be a human. It was just too mesmerizing.

It had never happened before. Because I’m not the kind of a guy who takes an extra second to admire a girl.

There is no point (haha, get it?) in separating the two sentences. Just merge them together.

But all my personal ego’s

How many ego's do you have? Usually, you would just refer to your ego as a singularity.

This was the time my brain got switched off.

This was the time my brain got switched off.

Anyway.

'Anyway' should never be a stand-alone sentence. It is a conjunction. Use it as one.

There she was writing her crappy math exam.

Math exam? I thought this was an accounts examination.

Now, in general, you have a lot of misuse of colons. And a lot of them too. Just, tone down on them, alright?

Also, paragraphing. Your first paragraph could be three paragraphs if you edited it. I'll give you one example.

The villain rang and sent out it’s minions to collect the answer sheets and broke my moment. : Today I try my very best...

There could be a separate paragraph, right where the random colon is.

The villain rang and sent out it’s minions to collect the answer sheets and broke my moment.

Today I try my very best...

Makes it better, no?

She said “Thank you”.

You always need a comma after the direct speech phrase - in this case 'said.' You have a lot of these mistakes.

This is the end my love story. . . . OR IS IT???

Don't end a story like this...seriously, it's one of the worst endings ever. Just cut off the 'OR IS IT' with the exaggerated 3 question marks.

Plot:

Spoiler
I don't have much to say here. Your story had a good base plot. I mean, it could be better in some areas, like the over-use of metaphors *cough cough* PIGEON *cough cough*.

I changed my mind about killing the pigeon as it was my friend.

Image

HE WAS ACTUALLY GOING TO KILL HIS FRIEND? WHAT THE HECK IS THIS?

Yeah, delete that line.

Now, in general, your story was good. What I really suggest you do is edit. Edit, edit, edit, edit. Get a friend to edit it for you. I mean, if you edited your story, half of this review would be gone. Just a tip for you.

And that's it! I hope you enjoyed my review...and please respond with a comment. Please.

Good story, the description lured me here. Well, there are some mistakes.

mistake 1: you said "coz" I know you mean because but this is YWS not whatsapp.

Mistake 2: The paragraph order- sorry if this seems harsh- HORRIBLE. You need at least two spaces before starting a paragraph and this story has too little paragraphs.

Mistake 3: “you’re welcome. it needs a capital Y. Remember after (") there need to be a captial letter.

Sorry if anything in this review seems harsh, I am now better than you are.

-Bye and keep writing with your great mind!

~MrMuddyPig!

Hello! I am not here for any grammatical corrections or suggestions (sorry!) for I am no English Wiz myself, but to simply say this story is fascinated! How sweet for a guy to do all that for his crush! I really wish it was still like that innocent and sweet nowadays...
Anyways, I really like the idea of how you put a pigeon and messages and made it kind of metaphorical in a way i think that is really clever. But for some reason I feel like the first half of the story was really slow and descriptive the the end was boom boom boom everything happened at once.
BTW i loved the "OR IS IT???" lol!
Keep up the good work and keep writing! Cannot wait to read more from you:)

I would be a terrible novel protagonist.
