Living with a First Class Arse.

Apparently, there are only so many times you can miss your boyfriend’s football match. And missing it once, is one time too many according to Scott. I didn't see the big deal, after having a boyfriend for 2 years and never missing a match I think I should be entitled to one Saturday lie in. So rolling over to my TV remote to continue with my friends-a-thon, I noticed my phone buzzing.

“‘Ello?” I said groggily. Mispronunciation, yumm. Such an attractive trait Lena.

“Marlene? Where the hell are you?”

“In bed.” I yawned, he sounded annoyed. “Why?” An irritated sigh came from the other end of the phone.

“Football? Do you know how embarrassing it is to walk off the pitch to nobody?”

“OhGod, I'm so sorry Scott! My alarm didn't go off and I-” I trailed off looking at my clock; the once luminous numbers had vanished. I noticed the back off it lying on top of my books on the floor. “Libby must have taken out the batteries again, you know what she's like. I'm really sorry hon.”

Another sigh, “Whatever Lena. Just don't do it again, I don't want to be like William' I ignored the jab at William, and told him I'd speak to him later before hanging up. After the conversation with Scott, I was awake and ditched my TV for the prospect of a bacon sarnie.

Entering the kitchen I found Libby sat at the table. She was mindlessly twirling a spoon in one hand and in the other she held her blackberry, which she was swiftly tapping away on. The radio was blaring her dodgy mainstream music, and I was pretty certain that the radio hadn't had batteries yesterday. Funny that, wonder where she got them.

“Where's mum gone?” Libby barely looked up from her phone as she shrugged, and pointed at the note on the fridge. Typical that Libby hadn't actually looked at it. Being two years my minor, I love saying that I sound so mature, Libby's 14. The age where her life revolves around her phone and keeping away from people such as myself.

“She's visiting Nana if your bothered?” Libby made a rather manly grunting sound at me before starting towards the door.

“I'm going to Gina’s” she yelled as she slammed the front door. Don't you just love little sisters?

I headed towards the fridge to get the bacon when the doorbell rang, Libby must have forgotten something. I walked to the big oak door and pulled on the handle, “Oh, hi. I wasn't expecting you.” Scott was on the door mat, obviously just back from his football match. His blondie red hair lay gelled back to his head, and his crystallised blue eyes gazed back at me. He had his backpack slung over his shoulder, he was wearing tight jeans and a Rihanna tshirt. And as much as I hate Rihanna, she’s completely over rated, I had to admit that he looked good. And then there was me, my greasy brown hair stuck in a topknot complimented by my mascaraless stubby eyelashes and my baggy New York Yankees tshirt and one of his sweater jackets. Rawh, Marlene the sex magnet everybody! And to top it off, I probably had morning breath. Oh Yes, he was one lucky guy.

“Hey, sorry to drop by. I had something important to talk about.” Important? This wasn't about the football was it?

“It's about us, I've been thinking. We've been together along time and-” Oh My God, William was right! He was going to invite me to go to Turkey with him, his older brother wasn't going due to his summer job, so Scott was allowed to take anyone he wanted! I wanted to scream yes, but I couldn't look to eager to go on Holiday with my perfect boyfriend.

“-maybe we should break up?” Excuse Me, What? Breakup? My thoughts of bikini's and dark beach strolls, and fancy cocktails vanished. No way was he breaking up with me, I was the cool girlfriend!

“You want to break up? Why?” I won’t cry. Maybe I’ll slap him instead?

“I think it's time to move on, you're obviously not that bothered about us considering that you didn't even turn up to my football game.” I hate Libby, if she hadn't taken the batteries then this wouldn't be happening. Oh, and my dear cousin William. He will die a painful death for getting me excited.

“That was a one off Scott, I've come to every other bloody match. So what is it? Have you met someone else?” His face, oh my God. He had, he liked somebody who didn't have greasy topknots and annoying sisters and eats bacon buttys for breakfast.

“No, I just think it'd be better for me to be single for a while. See what else is out there.” See what else is out there! Was he listening to himself, what a twat. I wasn't going to stand for this.

“Oh, well that's good I guess.”

“Good? What's good about me breaking up with you? That means you will not have me as your boyfriend any more Lena.” He said it slowly, as if he thought I didn’t understand English. I thought quickly, come on Lena. Think of something!

“Yes well, you know I've been offered a place at that boarding school?” True, completely and utterly true.

“I decided that I'm going to take up the scholarship.” What an I saying!? When did this happen?

“Oh” Scott looked dejected, “Congratulations I guess.” I gave him a hug, a friendly hug of course. Then kissed him on the cheek.

“Well, bye Scott. Maybe I'll see you around.” I closed the door, then turned my back and slid right down it.  I pulled my phone out of pocket and dialed. “Get over. Now.”

A few moments later I was sat in my room with my best friends, Leah and Sophie.

“But seriously, doesn’t this guy know what pit spray is? You're lucky Lena, I had to go all though that to get here.” She nodded earnestly as Leah chucked her phone down next to her, where it quickly buzzed again.

“Shut up Sophs. Can't you see she's upset?” I glanced in the mirror, I had tried so hard to stay neutral, but it obviously hadn't worked. “And what was it I heard about you taking the scholarship, I mean it's great and all. But how come I had to find out through Paul Marsdon. Seriously! Pimply

Paul walked past on the way her and told me to congratulate you!”

“Yeaaah,” I said nervously, shifting on my bed. “Scott and I have broken up.”

“What?” Leah practically screamed at me. “Why? You were so good together!” Apparently not, I thought dryly.

“He was too good for you anyway.” Gee, Thanks Sophie. Cold hearted Bitch, I don't why I'm friends with her sometimes. I think It's only because our parents were school friends.

“Ignore Sophie. What happened?” I told Leah, and Sophie started reading Leahs texts.

“Oh Lena, that sucks.” She patted my hand sympathetically. “So that's why you're going to take the scholarship then?” She snatched her phone back without looking at her annoying friend.

“Yeah, the only thing I'll miss is you anyway Leah. I might as well start fresh, you know how much I hate it here.” Truth, another attractive trait of Marlene Cave was that she could find the worst in anything. So know we have Pessimist, and she can't talk properly in the morning. Great. That'll be a good introduction at a new school.

“But, you were the cool girlfriend!”

“I know!” I was the girlfriend who would drive over to ANY of his friends houses at 2 o'clock in the morning to pick up a bunch of drunk boys and not be a bitch. I was the one they came to for girl advice. I would talk about girls and 'appreciate' them. I wasn’t clingy, I turned up to every football practise, I flashed a group of spotty teenagers so they'd bugger off. I even came over early to make them breakfast when they stayed over Scotts. I was that girlfriend, the girl who was a friend. Not just Scotts Girlfriend.

“He's a twat Lena, have any off the guys text you?” Oh Yes, all of them. Mainly to tell me they were going over to beat up Scott, that's my boys.

“A few of them did, said they'd miss my bacon sarnies.” Lena came over and wrapped her arms around me,

“We can sort this out. You'll be sombody elses cool girlfriend before we know it, and this time some fancy rich boy!” She squealed in my ear before throwing a pillow at Sophie. “C'mon Soph, we're going fancy scholarship girl shopping!”

I think this is a good story so far, I have nothing really to say in terms of criticism that hasn't already been said. I think this has an interesting plot and I like the comedy your using. I think that this is a really good story so far and I'm going to go read the next chapter.

Hi there!

The title definitely suckered me into reading this piece. I love the title. :)

Review time:

And missing it once, is one time to many according to Scott

*should be 'too'

I ignored the jab at William, and told him I'd speak to him later before hanging up.

*who's William? I have to admit that I don't get this reference. Maybe he's an English soccer, sorry, football star. I'm American, in case you didn't notice with the soccer thing there, so any references to English people or whatever I won't get. Just a fair warning. Just ignore anything that makes me look like an idiot. Like this comment right now...

Entering the kitchen I found Libby sat at the table, turning a spoon in one hand and in the other her blackberry, which she was swiftly tapping away on.

*in order to make this sentence flow better I suggest writing it like this: 'Entering the kitchen, I find Libby sitting at the table, mindlessly mixing her cereal which typing away on her blackberry'. See how I reworded some of that? Sometimes it's a matter of the right words and how they're placed in order to write a good novel.

Typical that Libby hadn't actually looked at it.

*ha. I usually ignore notes from my mother as well. Either that or I skim through and don't actually pay attention to what it says

Being two years my minor, I love saying that I sound so mature, Libby's 14.

*I KNOW that this comment is going to make me sound stupid, but I'm going to make it anyway. I don't understand the whole minor thing. I guess I do in a way, but it sounds weird. I'm guessing that if Libby is 14 and is Marlene's 'minor', Marlene is 16. Correct? Please say yes, I want to feel smart.

“I'm going to Sophies,”

*just a tiny nitpick, there should be an apostrophe in Sophie's

His blondie red hair stuck lay gelled back to his head, and his crystallised blue eyes gazed back at me.

*this is great description, but I have a problem with how you worded the phrase in bold. I suggest saying this instead: 'His blondie hair stuck to the back of his head, gelled back,'

He had his backpack slung over his shoulder, he was wearing tight jeans and a Rihanna tshirt, eww Rihanna, But he looked good.

*okay, here's how I would reword this whole sentence: 'His backpack was slung over his right shoulder. He was wearing tight jeans and a Rhianna t-shirt. I hate Rhianna. But he looked good despite who he was wearing on the front of his shirt.'
*I think you should emphasize the whole Rhianna t-shirt thing. It's good character building. We now know that Marlene doesn't like Rhianna. And while 'eww Rhianna' works well in spoken words, it doesn't work in a written novel. Sure you're writing from Marlene's perspective, but it just doesn't work written out like that.

Rawh, Marlene the sex magnet everybody!

*I laughed so hard at this. In fact, I'm still laughing. Please hold.

He was going to invite me to go to Turkey with him, his older brother wasn't going due to his summer job, so Scott was allowed to take anyone he wanted!

*okay, now I look insanely stupid for my previous comment about William. I can now see that he is a character, not some famous English football player. Duh! Anyway, I want to know more about this William. Is he friends with Scott or friends with Marlene? Maybe he's friends with both? And what is Turkey? I'm guessing it's a dance. Give me some more background info.
*this sentence should be broken into two sentences like this: 'He was going to invite me to go to Turkey with him! Scott's older brother wasn't going because of his summer job so Scott was allowed to take anyone he wanted. And he chose me!' (Gasp, hyper teenage girl in love scream!) What? You know that's what's going inside Marlene's head as she's imagining Scott asking her to go to Turkey. Don't look at me like that...

“-maybe we should break up?” Excuse Me, What? Breakup?

*aw, poor Marlene. That must be a huge hit. Here she's thinking of him asking her to Turkey and she's all excited, and then she gets dumped. Boo Scott!

(I'm still laughing about the sex magnet thing by the way)

My thoughts of bikini's and dark beach strolls, and fancy cocktails vanished.

*so Turkey has something to do with the beach I'm guessing?

I wouldn't cry.

*you should say 'I won't cry' if you want the right reaction from the reader. When you say she won't cry, it tells us she is standing up to him and being strong even in the wake of a breakup

“I think it's time to move on, you're obviously not that bothered about us considering that you didn't even turn up to my football game."

*oh my gosh, WORST BOYFRIEND EVER! Sheesh. Get over the fact that she missed your stupid football match! It wasn't really that important anyway. I bet you even lost! Ugh!
(in case you didn't realize, that whole rant was directed at Scott. Okay, changing back to mature, reviewer now.)

His face, oh my God.

*what does his face look like? Did it change from serious and angry to soft and guilty? Did he lower his gaze, not meet Marlene's eyes? Look past her? If you describe what his face looks like, it adds more effect (affect? I get those two mixed up) than simply sharing Marlene's reaction.

“Good? What's good about me breaking up with you? That means you will not have me as your boyfriend any more Lena.”

*jerk

“I decided that I'm going to take up the scholarship.” What an I saying!? When did this happen?

*sucks. I hate what pressure situations do to poor, unsuspecting girl characters. They always think too fast and end up spitting out some promise or truth that they have to follow through with. Welp, guess Marlene is going to boarding school!

A few moments later I was sat in my room with my best friends, Leah and Sophie.

*didn't Libby just go over to Sophie's house? I guess she has a friend named Sophie too.

Readers, for you're benefit I shall explain how I was the cool girlfriend.

*eh, I hate when authors do this. It's just an opinion, but I've always been taught to write for the reader, not to the reader. And by putting this sentence in here, you are talking directly to the reader. I don't like that. But it doesn't matter what I think, it's your story.

Mainly to tell me they were going over to beat up Scott, that's my boys.

*victory! Marlene has Scott's friends on her side!

Overall this is a great start. You've done a good job with character development and your dialogue is very realistic. There are many place though, where you don't use dialogue tags. For example, when Marlene and Scott were talking, you didn't day 'Scott said' or 'Marlene complained'. Understand? It was easy enough to understand while I was reading, but sometimes I needed to see who was saying what.

I can't wait to read more! And I'm sorry if the review was harsh, but I'm here to help you become a better writer. I put a lot of suggestions in there, but at the end of the day, it's your story. You do what you want with it.

Post on my wall when you add another chapter!

Keep writing!

Good story, there's only a few typos I saw while reading it.

"'She's visiting mum if your bothered.'" It should be: "She's visiting mum if you're bothered.'" I know the different yours can be tricky, and sometimes hard to pick up on while proof-reading.

"...,eew Rihanna, But he looked good." In this sentence I think you just accidentally hit the comma key. But the same thing happened in this sentence: "Gee, Thanks Sophie."
Just watch out for the capitalization and/or comma/period button because it can spoil the effect you were setting in the story.

Another thing to look out for is spacing because occasionally there was a spacing slip-up between words without a space. The only critique I have is before you post something next time, just be sure to go back and proofread a little closer.

Okay, enough nitpicking. What I really enjoyed about this story is that it shows when relationships come to an end. Most everybody will have to deal with a breakup in their lifetime, (even though I have yet to experience one) even the famous Harry Potter broke up with Cho Chang and Skeeter from the Help and that other guy...you get the picture. Anyways, you showed how it's great to have support from friends when dealing with something like this and how they can they can help you move on.

Bravo on that,

Nice story, I think you can definitely expand on it if you want to. A few errors I noticed:

“She's visiting Nana if *you're bothered?” (you're instead of your in this case)
*Excuse me, what? (some unnecessary capitalization)
What *am I saying!? (tiny spelling mistake)
I *wasn't clingy, (another tiny misspelling)

I also noticed in a few places, speaking parts were a little clumped together. Try separating the, each time someone new talks, for instance:

“Ignore Sophie. What happened?” I told Leah, and Sophie started reading Leahs texts.

“Oh Lena, that sucks.” She patted my hand sympathetically. “So that's why you're going to take the scholarship then?” She snatched her phone back without looking at her annoying friend.

It makes it a little easier to read. Overall, not a bad story! Keep writing! =)
