Nothing Rhymes With Purple

by ratdragoon

Published October 17, 2008

This is a poem I wrote of a creative writing competition. First poem I've written in years, so please be nice :D.

Nothing rhymes with purple

Oh, nothing rhymes with purple,
Lament, for it is true,
Who indeed would take the time, to rhyme,
With colours such as blue?

Dr Seuss could rhyme with purple,
His literacy master plan,
Was rhyme purple using fluple,
And other words unknown to man.

But alas, for he’s not with us now,
Purple rhyming’s moved on too,
I know y’all care, but don’t despair,
Rhyming will, indeed, get through.

We can try to rhyme with purple,
Keep alive this rhyming craze,
Don’t let it die, you have to try,
You may well be amazed!

They say nothing rhymes with purple,
But we know now that’s not true,
But who’d “waste” the time, on such a rhyme?
Dr Seuss, that’s who!

nothing rhymes with purple, is in fact, untrue. i believe a "hurple" is some form of riding equipment aha xD (in response to Luvsi, i do people that's assonant as opposed to rhyming ;) )

i love your nice little rhyming scheme, it's pretty safe a traditional, but it still works so long as you measure your syllables correctly, which you have.

i can't help but feel like is something of an ode to Dr. Suess...perhaps if you changed your last line, mention other writers, it might feel more like a poem about nothing rhyming with purple, as opposed to "all praise Dr. Suess", forgive me if that sounded harsh.

Haha! I loved it! I am a big fan of Dr. Seuss myself so I liked the lightheartedness of the poem. I agree with Kayde2 as well; the word "fluple" stuck out to me as well. That, I think, is my only suggestion other than to keep on writing. I hope you won the competition! The poem kept reminding me of my own plight, trying to rhyme something with "orange". It's said that nothing rhymes with that word either but after some hard thought, I came up with "door hinge." Alas, no one really cares about the color orange so my search was in vain. :(

P.S.
I think "curdle" might rhyme as well...Maybe.

This poem made me laugh because a few days ago, for Valentine's Day, I was trying to rhyme a word with purple and had no luck. I have reciently found a website that assists with rhyming...
http://www.rhymezone.com/

I really liked the way this poem flowed. The one thing I would suggest is changing "fluple" to "flurple". I would also like to read more of your work!
Keep it up :)

I really loved the poem! It was so carefree, and funny.
I can see this in a children's book, with funny illustrations, like in Dr. Seuss's books.

One thing though,
instead of "fluple" you should use "flurple."
Though, I think that's what you meant, and it was just a typo ;)
Just pointing that out.

I loved the poem though!

Haha, I am proud to say trying to rhyme with purple kept me amused for a good couple of minutes!
I love your style, its quite different and I think the great Dr Seuss would be impressed. Now... does anything rhyme with orange?
Damn, now that's going to get me thinking too! *sigh* It's going to be a looong night

HA! This was most amusing, I must say! Kept me smiling throughout the whole piece, especially with the consistent mention of Dr. Suess, very nice. Usually, I have little nitpicks to point out in people's poetry, but I can't seem to find one. Except...

Nurple rhymes with purple, haha!

Gah, I hate giving short reviews. But, from what I can see, other people beat me to anything that could possibly be wrong- I'm not poet, so if there was anything hidden, there's no way I could see it, haha!

Thanks for sharing; keep writing!

Cute poem, but isn't it "flurple", not "fluple"?

Also, I think Turtle rhymes with Purple ;)

It really doesn't seem like this is your first poem written in years, haha.
Keep up the great work!

PS- If you say it the right way, "verbal" also rhymes with it, ahahha.

I could not remove the feeling that the rhyming in here was forced into order to achieve an effect that was not quite communicated between this calling to Dr. Seuss, almost channeling his influence, and in an elegiac remembrance admitting he has passed. The problem with talking about rhymes and attempting to use rhyme in a poem, is that you create this cyclical expectation you can't escape from without being very witty and experienced; you are then left, my poor friend, with an unintended gimmick.

For what this poem is, I can see your last few lines attempt to be "cute", however as has been pointed out, this is rather anti-climatic. Is it obvious to the reader why Dr. Seuss ends a poem titled "Nothing Rhymes With Purple"? I would advocate narrowing your focus down, find a clear idea to setup why this should proceed into mentioning Dr. Seuss. For instance, what is the point mentioning other colors? Why does the reader care about this topic, most of all?

Don't be dismayed though, there's a good draft here that can be built on and learned from.

What can i say? I love rhyme especially when it has some humor in it. I would just have to suggest that you keep a consistent meter scheme so that the lines can blend into the rhyme more fluidly. For instance, i noticed most of the lines have either 8 or 7 syllables. Maybe you can tweak the others to have either 7 or 8 too. Anyway, that's more of a personal opinion/suggestion. Overall, i think it was a pretty decent work.

Was rhyme purple using fluple,

"Purple" and "fluple" don't rhyme.

"Curple" and "hirple" are English words. They rhyme with "purple".

"Angst" has no English word to rhyme with. :(

This is odd, I don't normally critique poetry. Oh well! :D

Oh, nothing rhymes with purple,
Lament, for it is true,
Who indeed would take the time, to rhyme,
With colours such as blue? This does not make sense. What you are saying is "Nobody wants to take their time to rhyme with blue." Why blue? How about, "Who indeed would take the time, to rhyme/When other colors call you." or something like that. I really suck with poetry.

Dr Seuss could rhyme with purple,
His literacy master plan, I agree with Mars for this part
Was rhyme purple using fluple, "Flurple" would be a better choice
And other words unknown to man.

...

They say nothing rhymes with purple,
But we know now that’s not true,
But who’d “waste” the time, on such a rhyme? Why is 'waste' put in quotation marks?
Dr Seuss, that’s who! This is a twist... albeit an anticlimactic one. I really don't think it's the best sort of line to end the poem with, but I couldn't come up with a better one.

So, that's my critique. I left two parts out because I liked them just the way they were.
Very funny!

Haha, nice! I love your poem. xD :D I love the 'happy' and carefree emotion it has. It might as well be a children's poem. :D I hope you win the competition.

I've got some nitpicks for you by the way :):

Who indeed would take the time, to rhyme,

- I don't think there should be any commas here.

Dr Seuss could rhyme with purple,

- There should be a period after 'Dr'. Same goes with the other 'Dr Seusses' in this poem.

But we know now that’s not true,

- Put a comma after 'But'.

And, whoah at October Girl's comment! I was still trying to find a sensible rhyme for purple when I read her post lol.

wow. wow. this was really great, really original. the only thing i would change maybe is when you say

"his literacy master plan"

it seems kind of weird, and i'm not sure what that means, so i would suggest:

"his literary master plan"

anyway, it doesn't really matter, just a humble opinion. :D

Ah, great. I really liked this. This was perfect for the mood I am now, which is tired, haha. But I know I would've liked this even though I wasn't tired at all.

Sohini really said it all.

I saw the title as a random piece when I was posting a review, and it indeed caught my eye. I had to go find it again, though, because when I'd posted the review, the random piece had already changed. :)

Good work, I want to see more by you!

And oh, welcome to YWS! ;)

This is an enjoyable poem indeed.

The title caught my interest and good going Oct Girl with circle!!

You have a fresh style, very light-hearted yet appealing. It's a break from the mundane mourning poems about life, so kudos to the originality of your theme!

Oh, do put the title in Sentence Case please, otherwise no major defects in this piece.

That was cute! it had a nice flow and consistent beat. I liked how there was a twist and fuse of Dr. Seuss in the Purple poem. It's seems to me it's a basic catchy funny rhyming poem on purple, how nothing rhymes with it and only Dr.S would even try. Nice!
