What if?

E - Everyone

Yeah,
I get jealous.

Not because I think I'm insecure,
or maybe I am—
I don't know.

I just hate the feeling
of watching someone I care about
slowly belongs to someone else's.

When I see you
with somebody else,
I smile and hope you're happy.

But somewhere inside me,
something quietly aches.

'Cause what if you find someone new?

Someone who brings out
a better side of you.
Someone who understands you
in ways I never could.
Someone prettier than me.
Someone softer, easier,
someone who never argues,
never annoys you,
never makes things complicated.

Someone you'd choose
without hesitation.

Someone you'd choose
instead of me.

And I hate how my mind
turns everything into a question.

What if you forget me?
What if you realize
I'm too much?

Too clingy.
Too annoying.
Too difficult to love.

Maybe I am.

But all I've ever wanted
is one person who stays.

One person
who chooses me
even when there are
a hundred better choices.

One person
I can call mine
without being afraid
they'll leave tomorrow.

'Cause I've felt lost before.

I've felt what it's like
to look around
and realize
there's no one to turn to.

And I don't want
to feel that way again.

The thought of being alone
terrifies me.

What if, one day,
I have no one
who chooses me?

I laugh.
I pretend I'm fine.
I act like I don't care.

But I do.

Oh Lord, I do.

Maybe I'm overprotective.
Maybe I'm possessive.

Maybe I hold on too tightly
because I'm terrified
of being left behind.

I don't always show it,
but every time
I see someone getting closer to you,

a small part of me asks—

Why not me?
Why them?

What do they have
that I don't?

What if they become
your favorite person?

What if you replace me
without even realizing it?

What if I'm abandoned again?

What if...

I spend my whole life
looking for someone
who stays,

only to find out
that no one ever truly
cared enough to?

This is such a devastating poem. It reads more like a long stream of consciousness: the worries that worm around in your brain when you can't sleep at night, when you see the person post on their story or you see them out in town. It's very relatable, and I can feel the emotion behind it.

I just hate the feeling
of watching someone I care about
slowly become someone else's.

I love the idea here, but 'slowly become someone else's' feels a little clunky. Maybe 'slowly belong to someone else' ?

When I see you
with somebody else,
I smile and hope you're happy.

But somewhere inside me,
something quietly aches.

'Cause what if you find someone new?

This really hits. It's such a bittersweet feeling, trying to be the better person but unable to stop those jealous feelings.

Someone who brings out
a better side of you.
Someone who understands you
in ways I never could.
Someone prettier than me.
Someone softer, easier,
someone who never argues,
never annoys you,
never makes things complicated.

This is so devastating. This is something I think about even in my current relationship. What if there is someone better out there for them? I like that you never say about there being someone better for YOU, but it's about them, and it shows how much you care but also how rumination on past relationships can really affect us mentally.

I spend my whole life
looking for someone
who stays,

only to find out
that no one ever truly
cared enough to?

What a punch in the gut to end on. I hope you are doing okay. I agree with what Bambi said; you should stay for yourself!

My only feedback is that it does read like a long list of feelings. This is great, but I wonder about trying to find some more abstract ways to describe what is being felt or worried about rather than simply stating it? Or some imagery that reminds you of them, or that you think will remind them of you?

<3 Keep writing

okay! i'd definitely edit it soon... btw i'm doing good and thankyou so much for the review

Hey Quiet Cat! I'm here to review your work :)

This poem was very striking and emotionally felt deeply.

I must say I think many many people have felt these feelings before. It's so hard to trust that the ones we care for love us like we hope they do, especially and mainly when we have had so many hurts before. When life has shown us from others that we aren't worth the time or effort it can be very easy to sink into this way of feeling and thinking.

To anyone feeling like this I say, be the one who stays. Stay for yourself. Ask yourself if you are worth staying for. Be truthful with yourself and really examine the answer. If they answer is anything other than a resounding YESSSSS, there is work to do. There is healing needed and learning to love who you are. If you don't want to stay for yourself, I recommend starting there and becoming the person you want to stay for.

This is not an easy journey. It is one that takes effort. Date yourself. Recognize the negative self-talk loops and remind yourself that if you were talking to a friend, you probably wouldn't be so harsh. Be the friend to yourself, you are to others.

IF the answer was YESSSS than Huzzah!!! You love yourself indeed and that is a beautiful thing!!! You will find the one who stays if you keep the focus on loving you. Your light cannot help but attract when it's shining.

To all reading: You are worth every bit of care. You are loveable. You are not difficult. You are not too much. Anyone telling you that, are not the ones for you. <3

Thank you for sharing Cat! Happy reading and writing!

Hyyyy!! Thank you so much for this review. I’m already on the journey of healing and learning to love myself, and I know it’s definitely not easy. I’ve come a long way, but I still have these little fears that sometimes get the better of me.

But yeah, I really do want to find someone who stays. Someone who chooses me and genuinely wants me in their life. I guess that’s something I’m still learning to believe I deserve too. 🫶

Thank you again for taking the time to read my poem and write all of this. It genuinely means a lot <33
