Tapping
The tapping on my window started again. I breathed through my nose, closing my eyes. I needed to calm down. Just because I was the only one that heard it didn't need to make it more annoying. The key, I reminded myself, is to remain calm and think about it in a rational way. Though I was never really big on the rational part, heaven knew.
It took a few minutes until the knocking subsided. I opened my eyes, closing the book in my hand. No use. The crying has started now.
I knocked on the wall. "Hey, kid, keep it down!" I said loudly, hoping the message would get across.
The sniffling child on the other side of the wall wouldn't stop. "B-but I'm… I'm dea-dead!" he stuttered, bursting in a new fit of tears.
"I know that!" I yelled. Ugh. Kids were always like that. Adults were so much quieter. "That does not mean you should hide in my attic."
The kid peeked a little outside of the wall. "Then what should I do?" he demanded.
A slight shudder ran through me as nothing but his head stuck out of the bricks. "How should I know?" I asked irately. "Geez, you and all the rest." I scratched the back of my head, trying to remember bits from Sunday school. "Isn't there supposed to be some sort of… light?" I asked in a perplexed tone.
The kid shook his head wildly, no hope in those sad blue eyes of his. "Nope. You just… die." And the tears were swelling up again.
I rubbed the back of my head more fiercely. God, I just want to read a good book, damn it. Can't I have one moment of quiet? I looked up with earnest desire. It took a few moments before I remembered that there is no god, because if there was I wouldn't be dealing with these… things. People was just not the right word. I sighed. "Alright. Then, where do you live?"
The sobs and wails grew more pronounced. "I don't know…"
The kid walked through the wall and sat on my bed. His hair looked like it was freshly cut, and he was wearing a shirt with a name of a baseball team printed on it. Everything about him was alright, except that he was somewhat… transparent. All ghosts were. I didn't even know what they were at first. I figured they were just sick or something.
He put his head in his little hands. "Why me?" he asked in despair.
Yeah, God, why me?
I sat down next to him. And now I was stuck with this kid. I was too nice of a person, I thought while internally groaning. I wasn't going to rest until he was feeling better now. Just great. "It's not just you," I said, trying for a weak smile. "There are more. It always happens."
The boy didn't raise his head. I groaned. "Come on, kid, work with me here. What's your name?"
"Jared", came the muffled reply.
I nodded. "Alright Jared. Nice to meet you, I'm Chad –" I knew I was going to going to regret it later. Hell, I was regretting it as I was saying the words. "I'll show you around. How 'bout that? Would that make you feel calmer? You could drag your new body along, get used to it." The other ghosts usually did the same. I hoped that would help him get better and get out of my attic. This wasn't even my place! The crazy old hag that rented it to me was somewhere in the far east, probably getting even crazier than she was now.
Jared raised his head from his hands, just a fraction. "You… sure?"
I nodded reluctantly, grimacing. "Oh, yeah."

Hey there, I'm Hawk and I'm here for a review!
First off, I love this whole premise! Totally sucked me in and makes me want to read more. Depending on where you go with this story, it could border on the whole "Sixth Sense" plot, buuut right now I'm not seeing anything that makes me concerned about that.
Now, onto the nitpicks. My comments are in blue.
Well, that's all I have to say! Please PM me when you post the next chapter - I'd love to read more.
