the final act

PreviousNext

Lobsters molt their shell to grow,

snakes discard their damaged skin.

I was small and scared but know

I found a way to let you in.

It is the way of all of life

to change within their time

on Earth, and so you’ll use the knife

to sever yours from mine.

I don’t know if I’d even like you

had we met this December,

but the version of you that little me knew

is the one I’ll choose to remember

I loved you then, I still today

and that is all you’ll know.

You taught me what it means to say

the final act of love is letting go.

Danggg you ate with this one!!

Ok ok I did really enjoy this so lemme break it down so I don’t just rant for you.

I liked your comparison to you as a snake, throwing away the dead skin. It symbolizes the parts of us that are now unrecognizable are no longer parts of us, maybe like our past mistakes? That’s how I interpreted it but it can be interpreted as countless different ways.

I liked how you said this:

I don’t know if I’d even like you
had we met this December

This is a very reflective verse that J found very interesting as it ponders on that “what if” statement. I think we all wonder that a couple times in our lives as well. If certain parts of life line up, then the timing is perfect, and this line was a special one to me as there are certain times in people’s lives that they crave that romantic support and other times that it just isn’t what we need, so good job!

I didn’t see any typos or obvious so you’re gooooood.
Best regards!

Hello! I'm not much of an expert here when it comes to poetry or writing in general but personally I love the continuity of the rhythm and the overall message that you presented, it is properly edited and I like the way you skillfully craft the words, it's very impressive.
I love the part where it goes "but the version of you that little me knew
is the one I'll choose to remember" it makes the reader really understand the feeling of letting go but not forgetting. I also love the lines the follow after it, it's bittersweet, it's beautiful and it just makes sense. I honestly have nothing to critique about.
Keep writing!
(PS: it reminds me of the song 'death of a hero' by Alec Benjamin, just wanted to let you know:) )

that's so kind thank you so much : D

Hi there!

Not a ton to comment or say, the other reviews covered things pretty well. So I'm stopping by to say that I love this! The simplicity really helps it hit home and convey good imagery. Sometimes you have to choose to believe the better version/memory of someone not only to help with your own growth and change, but to help yourself keep some peace within yourself. Although that is my own experience talking.
Very well done!

Well, I too am not a poet XD So maybe this works out for the both of us?

First of all: I love the rhythm. I love how I can read it without having to stop to figure out how to read each line and where I need to put the emphasis (at least most of the time XD).
Second of all:

you’ll use the knife
to sever yours from mine.
Love that line and that image!

Also about choosing to remember the best version of someone is aspiration in a way.
I also like the ending of the poem. It’s very nice. Thanks for sharing :3

Oh. Wow. I loved that a lot, really. I'm a sucker for angsty stuff so this is the sort of thing that I really enjoy. I'm not the best at analyzing poetry lol but I can tell this is really good.

"It is the way of all of life

to sever yours from mine.

I don’t know if I’d even like you

had we met this December,

This part is amazing. It's really hard to put into words, but everybody changes throughout their life, and this speaker is 'choosing to remember' the person they knew before, not the person they know now. They choose to remember the better parts of that person rather than the parts they didn't like as much. And "the final act of love is letting go"... that's deep. I love it.
