THE DOGS' REVENGE

In a bright summer afternoon, Sleigh-Eve was running happily in the park with shiny green grass and fully dressed oak trees. Beside the green field, there was a large sandy space full of benches, surrounded by an iron fence, with a gigantic sign saying "Area privileged to dogs. No humans allowed!" On one of the benches in the fenced area, Max and Chloe, ignorant of Sleigh-Eve who was playing few meters away from them, were sitting side by side, cuddling each other's shoulder, and watching their lovely son Ralph make sand castles right in front of them.

Sleigh-Eve was a beautiful eight year old girl. The Woofy family adopted her three days after her birth; she was bought for $2000 and got separated from her family. Her legal name was Carla, but after the adoption, The Woofies changed her name to Sleigh-Eve. Although it had almost been a decade since Sleigh-Eve joined The Woofy Family, Ralph still remembered the tears Sleigh-Eve's four year old brother produced on the day of the adoption, when Sleigh-Eve was deprived from her own family.

After building his sand castle, Ralph stood up, approached to his parents, and asked: "Ma! Pa! Can I play with Sleigh-Eve?". His parents gave him the permission right away. Ralph, with a huge excitement, grabbed a stick from the ground, left the fenced area, and stepped on the field. He gripped the stick tight in his palm, raised his hand, yelled: "Sleigh-Eve, catch!", and threw the stick far away from where he stood. Sleigh-Eve, just like all other young ladies and gentlemen her age, started sprinting towards the stick. In less than ten seconds, she was back, holding it with both hands. She gave it to Ralph. The fun continued for half an hour, until Ralph had seen the sweat dropping off Sleigh-Eve's hair and had understood that it was now time to end the game.

After the game was over, Ralph caressed Sleigh-Eve's head, put on her collar, and started walking towards the entrance of the fenced area where his parents were seated. Max and Chloe, after seeing the two, stood up, and they all started walking back home.

At 9 o'clock in the evening, Chloe summoned Max and Ralph to dining room for supper. "I made roast beef, mashed potatoes, and salad for tonight," Chloe said, and added: "We also have some leftover chicken from yesterday for Sleigh-Eve."

Sleigh-Eve was lying down beside the coffee table in the living room. When Ralph called her name, she stood up immediately, and made her way to the dining room. She saw that the leftover chicken had already been placed on the dusty floor. She started eating it.

...

Few hours after supper, the family decided to go to bed. They were all tired, especially Ralph, for chasing Sleigh-Eve all day. It had gotten a little windy in the evening, so Ralph asked his parents if they could let Sleigh-Eve sleep inside the house for the night, but Max gave him a negative response by saying: "No need for that, son. Sleigh-Eve is a human, she's not allowed to sleep inside. She has her own shed outside. That's where she'll be sleeping." Ralph, upon hearing Max's response, took Sleigh-Eve outside to the backyard. He put on her leash, tied it to the corner of the shed, filled her bowl with rusty, unfiltered tap water, and made his way back inside the house to end the day.

At 2 a.m., it started raining. Sleigh-Eve, who had been sleeping outside of the shed, decided to step inside. However, the partially broken, wooden, old shed was not good enough to protect Sleigh-Eve from getting wet. Sleigh-Eve began whining as her lovely, cotton-white furs got wet.

The next morning, Ralph heard somebody outside coughing loudly. Upon looking through the window, he saw that that somebody was Sleigh-Eve. He urged to his parents' bedroom to wake them up. "Woof woof!", Ralph said, "Sleigh-Eve is sick. We have to take her to the doctor. Let's go now please." His parents got up immediately, prepared the car, and took their human to the doctor. Dr. Pawstiff, after examining Sleigh-Eve, said: "There's absolutely nothing to worry about. She's only got a cold. Yesterday night was a little chilly. She must have gotten it then. I'll be prescribing medicines. She'll feel much better by tomorrow, I promise."

The next morning, Sleigh-Eve was indeed feeling better. As soon as she woke up, she went outside and ran around. She was cheerful, unaware of the disaster that was approaching her.

At the breakfast table, Chloe said: "Woofy family! I have something very important to tell you. Please listen carefully." Upon hearing these words, both Ralph and Max put down their coffee mugs and looked at Chloe. Chloe coughed, and continued: "I have found a family who owns a male human, and they would like to have baby humans. So I thought we could lend them Sleigh-Eve for a while. They are willing to pay us, as well. If we lend her, we'll earn $1000. What do you think? Should we do it?"

Ralph immediately objected to this proposal. However, Max liked it. "$1000 is definitely worth it. Let's just give her away tomorrow."

Sleigh-Eve had overheard the entire conversation. She got very upset. She sneaked out of the house and made her way across the street, where her friend Abby lived. Abby was the closest human Sleigh-Eve had in her life. She was always there to listen to Sleigh-Eve's personal concerns, and she always supported her.

"I can't believe they are doing this to you", Abby said, after hearing about the issue. "But don't worry. We are going to deal with this together. I won't let that happen to my best friend. Trust me, you won't be forced to have kids with someone you don't know." Sleigh-Eve hugged her, thanked her, and made her way back to her house, hoping The Woofies didn't notice that she'd gone to see Abby.

...

"The big day is tomorrow!", Chloe said, "I am so excited. We're going to earn $1000. It's not too much but it's better than nothing. By the way, Max, the guy's name is Joshua. I saw his pictures and he is very handsome. Sleigh-Eve's kids will all look beautiful."

"Wait. Chloe, I think I got a really good idea. How about we pay that family $1500, and keep the babies? We can sell them few weeks later and make a fortune!" Chloe stopped cheering for a second. Then, she smirked. "That's a marvellous idea, Max. We will be rich after selling those little humans. Indeed, we ought to do that. I will just call Joshua's owners now, and make the offer."

After negotiating on the phone for few minutes, Chloe finally returned with happy news. She told Max and Ralph that Joshua's owners had accepted the offer. They would all come over the next day, give Joshua, and receive their $1500.

Everything went just as planned the next day. As soon as Joshua's owners left, The Woofies locked the two humans in a room, and walked away from the door. A week later, The Woofies visited Dr. Pawstiff, who told Max and Chloe that Sleigh-Eve was pregnant to three lovely humans.

Two months had passed, and Sleigh-Eve finally gave birth. The babies were all so cute. Ralph enjoyed watching Sleigh-Eve breastfeed the lovely, little humans. "Two girls, and one boy", Ralph said, "I can't wait till they grow up and play with me. I won't let my parents give these lovelies away."

About a month later, a dog contacted to Max, and offered The Woofies $2000 for two humans. Without consulting to his family, Max accepted the offer and gave away both of the girls. Sleigh-Eve, unable to protect her children, locked herself in a room and cried to Abby for an entire week. "How could they separate me from my children?", she said, "The dogs are very cruel to humans. They don't care about our emotions."

"Let's rebel!", Abby said. After seeing the questioning look on Sleigh-Eve's face, she continued: "Get aggressive. Yell at them. Show The Woofies that you don't appreciate what they are doing. They might understand your concern, who knows?"

After Sleigh-Eve stopped crying, Abby went back home. Sleigh-Eve thought deeply about what Abby said. In the end, she agreed to rebel to The Woofies.

The next morning, at 5 a.m., Sleigh-Eve started yelling loudly, waking up not only The Woofies, but also few of the neighbours across the street as well.

Sleigh-Eve continued to yell for the remainder of the day.

At the breakfast table, Chloe got annoyed. She said: "She's probably upset about her kids." Few hours after breakfast, Chloe grabbed a broomstick and hit Sleigh-Eve on the back. Sleigh-Eve started whining, and went to her room.

Sleigh-Eve kept on yelling at The Woofies for few weeks, until all the The Woofies, even Ralph, got annoyed and made a crucial decision about their human. They all sat down in the living room, and started discussing their plan.

...

"What's euthanasia?", Ralph asked to his parents.

Chloe gazed at Max, nodded her head, and said: "Euthanasia is like a medicine. We'll give it to Sleigh-Eve and she'll never be able to yell again. And we'll give that medicine to the baby guy, too. That should work the best for all of us."

"Oh, it sounds nice!", Ralph said, unaware that his mother didn't exactly tell him the truth.

Max and Chloe took Sleigh-Eve and her son to Dr. Pawstiff the next day. They told Ralph to stay at home not to interfere with the operation. They knew that if Ralph came, he wouldn't let the humans get euthanized.

"Are you sure about this?", Dr. Pawstiff asked, "Because it's illegal. Unless the human is very sick and cannot recover anymore, I can't really do it."

"Do whatever it takes.", Max said, "Here, I'm willing to offer you some extra money. Just do this and save us from these horrible human creatures."

"Ok, I'll do it. Just don't mention this to anybody. Also, you two might want to leave the room. This is not something you'd ever want to see." Upon request, Chloe left the room, but Max chose to stay. Dr. Pawstiff grabbed a needle, and injected it to the baby.

Max kept motionless.

Dr. Pawstiff grabbed another needle, and injected it to Sleigh-Eve.

Max smirked, and said: "Goodbye, you dirty two-legged weirdo."

When they returned home, Ralph asked where Sleigh-Eve and her baby were. "Dead!", Chloe said loudly, "They are dead! Finally! We can embrace the quietness now."

Ralph, as Chloe and Max had expected, cried for many days, until he came to realize that his parents were right for deciding to euthanize the humans. "Of course", he thought, "They made a lot of noise. They've also been acting crazily recently. Well, I guess they deserved to die."

...

Abby arrived home from her morning walk, went to the living room, and grabbed a photo album from the shelf. She turned the page and stared at the first photo for few minutes. Suddenly, tears started coming out of her eyes. She said: "Ah, Sleigh-Eve. You didn't deserve any of this. You were my best friend, and the nicest, the cutest human I'd ever known. These dogs... They just don't know how to treat humans. We're their pets; we're part of their family. If only they understood how worthy we are. They just have no idea that they hurt our feelings by treating us this badly. We deserve to live, too. We deserve to be happy, just like those dogs that enslave us. But maybe, I'm wrong. Maybe we do deserve all of this, after having treated our pets just like this for centuries. We've lost power. We've lost a war to dogs. Now, dogs might just be seeking revenge. Did we ever care about their feelings when we were dominant and they were our pets? No, we didn't. But still, even though we might deserve this horrible treatment, it's still extremely sad. Well, my words obviously cannot change the way this world works. As long as our owners keep treating us like this, we'll always be in sorrow and in danger. Though I now understand all the torture, the trouble we've caused to dogs for many years. If only I could apologize on behalf of humanity. But I just can't... Goodbye, Sleigh-Eve. Goodbye, my best friend."

At first the title made me laugh, A Dog’s Revenge, I have never heard of dogs actually not being too happy with the way things are. Maybe except for the whole dog fights that I heard about a few years ago. Then they would be a reason to really be angry and bite or maybe even eat people. The human part kind of threw me off. I was like ‘wait…what?’ “Sleigh-Eve is a human!!” So, this place is really ruled by dogs, omg it’s the Armageddon. The crap that dogs go through, who knew that they were forced to breed without us asking them how they feel about this. Lol, I know that sounds silly but it’s the truth. Sad ending. It is a really good read, I was stuck for the whole story. I couldn’t even hear the television going on. The ending I almost dropped a tear when they killed her.

This is a very clever piece because it shines a light on how we actually treat our dogs. I'm just going to nitpick a bit:

1. ""I can't believe they are doing this to you", Abby said, after hearing about the issue." Two things: one--it should be "I can't believe they are doing this to you," two--try to make it a little more realistic. Her best friend is being forced to HAVE A BABY with someone, for goodness sake!

2. Maybe change some of the names? Your choice.

3. Don't be afraid to get into the story… describe everything. A huge part of this is the world they live in, so show it to us.

4. Inconsistencies--can Sleigh-Eve understand the humans?

Great writing!
