Words out of 'a b c'

PreviousNext

Spectator’s eyes un-wrapped a budding writer in me

Indicating a couple of pens in my hand.

Encouraging me to write, cheering me by my side

Something I boasted about, but barely understand.

Tried reading above and between the lines

Flung myself into books and dictionary.

Comprehending little and reaching nowhere

Admitting, it’s not about “to be or not to be”

To orchestrate words into drifting lines is such a beauty

Professing the arduous fabrication of words out of ABC.

Hi! And I declare this is THE BEST free verse I've ever read on YWS or anywhere else for that matter. The "free yet structured"(irony? Nay!) internal pattern, the near-to-perfect choice of words and the reference to Shakespeare's Hamlet makes for a perfect rhythm of natural human speech! And the title couldn't be better- words out of ABC .Technically, there are no boundaries here, yet it is so acclimatized (at least that's how I felt).

The punctuation is used rather less but that is aptly enough here. I felt that the word "indicating" could use a substitution (Sorry I wasn't able to suggest one). And the content is such that it speaks to the aspiring writers. It works as an inspiration, a boost!

Thank you for writing. I hope to read more from you. Take Care. And oh! Happy Review Day!

This is very interesting. I love the ideas and the questions you bring to mind. The poem has depth to it, and there is a lot of truth in its lines.

Extremely controversial! I hate it when people quote the "to be or not to be" out of context and say that anyone can choose to be anything they want, which, obviously, isn't true. Some things take time and talent, and lots of hard work.

This poem is a great representation of classic free verse. Very well written!

Thank you mayyda!

Hey mayyda, Subtle here for a review!

Allow me to say, I quite like this poem because of how you have written it, and the idea that it expresses. I actually had to read it a couple of times over before I truly understood what you meant.

So, I couldn't really find any major nitpicks in this, in the grammatical sense this is almost flawless. However, rhythm wise. I recommend reading the poem out loud and see if you can find the rhythm, and then try cutting or adding some words to make it flow better. I cannot point out exactly how you should do it. As all poets have their own rhythm

Ah, I love these two lines. Flinging yourself into a world of words with infinite possibility just waiting for you. And yes, I agree we understand so little of the world of words and languages that we always seem to be turning circles.

Admitting, it’s not about “to be or not to be”

Haha, I love the Hamlet reference here. Is actually very good, and I did ponder over this for a bit before I realized that poetry is not black or white.

Wonderful poem! Well done! I hope to hear more from you!

Hi there,

I read this over twice and both times I really enjoyed it. I loved the idea that you set and it's very thought-provoking. The language that you use, especially in the first 6-7 lines, is excellently used. I really like this here:

'Tried reading above and between the lines

Flung myself into books and dictionary.'

I just love the idea of someone actively throwing themselves into a dictionary to discover unknown words and phrases. It's a lovely idea and something you've used well.

I couldn't actually find any major faults in this at all. I also enjoy that fact that it isn't easy to immediately understand what you're actually trying to say, so you make the reader work hard to figure it out. All good poetry does that, in my opinion. Words should show, not tell and you've done that really well.

I look forward to reading some more of your work in the future, and I'll keep a look out for your pieces. You've definitely got some great writing potential.

Well done,

H.L.P

Thanks all, your comments fill me with the right energy :)
