A pen is not just a writing utensil.
It can be a light in the darkness of the world,
The silver lining after a storm at sea,
A breath of fresh air when you are feeling your worst,
Anything that the creative mind wishes.
This contraption can save lives,
Start wars,
Make the imagination soar,
Yank the heartstrings of readers.
Anything that the creative mind pleases.
A pen is so simple, yet--
so, complex.
The world would not be able to function without this,--
this meager piece of plastic with a colorful fluid.
Ink.
The ink of a pen is the pens heart.
A pen can bleed different colors,
but only if the writer chooses that color.
With a pen you can’t go back on your word.
The only thing the author can do is hope,--
hope that readers will not make them regret their words,
because they will forever be there.
A book starts with ink and ends with ink,
A news article starts with ink and ends in ink,
A life starts with ink and,
ends with ink.

I like this new perspective of a pen and how the world almost revolves around it. This is definitely a take on a pen I have not heard of before, it is very original. This poem is well worded and the usage of each word makes me want to keep reading. There are many, many hooks in this poem that makes it so captivating and interesting. This is such as the first line "A pen is not just a writing utensil." which makes you wonder: What could it possible be used for other than writing. As it goes on there are more ways of using a pen listed and it makes you think about how a pen actually does affect major things like start wars. This poem truly makes you think that "A pen is so simple, yet-- so complex". There was clearly a lot of thought put into this which makes it that much better. I really enjoyed this and would recommend this to other people because I truly think this is such a captivating and imaginative take on a pen. It is almost like an ordinary object, like a pen, was brought to life. Once again, this was a very great poem and I cannot wait to hear more poems as amazing as this one!

So, now for the work of yours. I like the way it sounds so basic and simple as 'pen' but with so much thiughts and feeligns put in it. as you had mentioned in your work, the pen is something basic but still complex. I think that for a first work in the site you had very good job. Surely, I was not going to be that good as I am bad with poetry in general. Sorry for not being unhelpful but I do not find problems with this work so I can not ocmplain.
This is a beautiful poem in every way and I'm glad that someone finally put to paper what I'm sure most of the people on YWS feel. Writing is an outlet that can open a person up to the world around them and a pen (or pencil) are the keys to that world. I'll agree with Ashley too on your flow from line to line that just improved the overall reading experience. I couldn't agree more with what you say in the poem and I guess all I have to say now is keep up the good work! Let people know what writing means to you and I think that more often than not, they will have a similar outlook

matt2358, This was a beautiful written poem. I see why you won third. It was very good and the way you described the pen made me visualize it in my mind. It was very detailed and still it made sense.
