Someone just . . .

I sit down at my typewriter after months of neglecting it and remember the way it feels. When I press down on each key.  The sounds it makes, and the faint smell that always comes with it. I breathe in. I look at the time. I start to write. My fingertips gliding across the keys faster than they’ve ever gone before.

The time is 10.00am and right now, everything is happening.

Someone is dying. Someone is mourning. Someone has nothing left. Someone has just been told they have cancer. Someone is being raped. Someone is fleeing for their life. Someone is wasting their life. Someone is being sick. Someone is taking drugs. Someone just died. Someone is scared. Someone is screaming. Someone has been taken away from their parents. Someone just contracted a fatal disease. Someone is being murdered. Someone is murdering another. Someone crashed their car. Someone is being locked up. Someone just committed suicide. Someone is plotting to kill. Someone just looked into a person’s eyes and told them they hate them. Someone is beating a person they used to love. Someone’s life saving surgery just failed. Someone just doesn’t care anymore. Someone looked at the time and realised they didn’t have much left.

I take a deep breath and pause for a second. I then feel myself being sucked back into my writing.

But saying that.

Someone just gave birth. Someone is being told their life saving surgery was successful. Someone just remembered how to live. Someone is being told they’ll be a father. Someone is looking at one of the most beautiful places in the world. Someone is happy. Someone is eating the most delicious food in the world. Someone is making out. Someone is having their first kiss. Someone is being asked out. Someone has just been given a good test result. Someone has just been rescued from death. Someone is smiling. Someone is being told they are going to Disneyland. Someone has been given their first food in days. Someone is being given hope. It’s someone’s birthday. Someone just fell in love. Someone is achieving their dream. Someone has been given the thing they’ve always wanted. Someone just got a new job. Someone is having a great dream. Someone is feeling loved. Someone saved something that meant a lot to them. Someone found something to live for. Someone forgave someone else. Someone got given a chance to do something amazing. Someone got so lost in an idea, they forgot about their problems. Someone is going on a plane for the first time. Someone is trying to make a difference in life. Someone is taking a deep breath. Someone is safe for the first time in years. Someone is fighting for the thing they believe in. Someone is figuring out what they need to do to save themselves. Someone looked at the time and realised they had so much left they didn’t know where to start.

The clock ticks over to 10.01am. Everyone’s stories continue into the unknown and new ones start in the place of the others.

I am breathing hard when I sit back and pull my paper out from the typewriter. The pages smell fresh and feel crisp between my fingers. I feel fulfilled for the first time in months.

I feel alive.

I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life's realities.
