Fire
In the hearth of every home;
She sleeps soundly in the heart of destruction.
She burns her brightest on the darkest nights,
She is the light that opens our eyes to the world.
And, oh, how she dances-
The savage beauty of her flickering fingers and tongue,
Feeling for a taste to sate her carnal hunger.
She draws you in like a moth,
She sears with her furious flames;
Consuming.

Your work is amazing, Beth. Bravo.
Hello! I thoroughly enjoyed this poem. It flows very well, and the playful tone and word choice manage to evoke the movement and appearance of fire. The descriptions of fire are skillful and original. My favorite line is, "And, oh, how she dances." This line does a good job of portraying the wondrousness and beauty of fire. I especially like the way that you juxtapose the useful properties of fire with the destructive properties of fire. The double meanings of fire make it a very interesting focus for a poem.
There is one line that I think does not flow perfectly: "Showing us the way while leading us astray." This line sort of contains three-syllable rhyme, and it feels slightly awkward. You might want to reword it.
Also, two of the last three lines of the poem make the ending feel weaker than the rest of it. "She draws you in like a moth with her warmth/She sears with her flames." Being drawn to a flame like a moth is a common expression, which makes that line stick out, because the descriptions in the rest of the poem are very original. The attraction and heat of a fire are powerful, and I feel as though the descriptions here don't show that as clearly as they could.
Perhaps you could consider reworking a few lines or adding a bit to the end, but overall, I think this is a very good poem and I hope you write more.
I'm SO glad and slightly frustrated that line 5 caught someone else's attention! I wrote this poem around 2 years ago, and did brief editing before I submitted it, but I wasn't sure if I should delete that line or replace it, so I did neither. As for the ending... it eventually dies down. You can either stomp fire out and smother it, or you can let it smolder. The last few lines are a bit lackluster, which wasn't my original intent, but now I think it's fitting. Thanks for taking the time to provide your critique and praise!
Hi rikki here for a short review of your poetry "FIRE"
This poetry is short and sweet and very absorbing.
You brought out a side of fire which was undiscovered and may be never personified prior to your attempt.
The description of qualities and attributes of FIRE which is described as feminine is also appealing.
I liked a few lines of yours like"
In the hearth of every home,
She sleeps soundly in the heart of destruction.
She is the light that gives us life and pain
"
Also note that feminine side of FIRE suits better because most females are hot like FIRE.
keep writing,ATB.
Thanks! I like to play around with personification, but I do believe this is my first successful attempt. I'm also a notorious pyromaniac
The description is inaccurate!

I feel that you have written a good poem here, and I think you could expand this to a series of elements, fire, earth, ice etc. Just an idea. I, like your previous reviewer, feel that your main strength lies in giving fire a female personality, because this helps your aim of making fire a character. Your rhythm is measured and consistent, which is beneficial to the pace of reading. Finally your last line is good, as it effectively sums up the poem, varys the sentence length, and is a powerful word.
Hope this helps.
Ha I know the description is weak and a blatant lie, but I'm a newbie to this site so I didn't know what to write. As for the elemental series, I think you may be onto something! Thanks for the comment and suggestions!
I like the way you have given FIRE a feminine character. Nice!

Poem brings about different emotions with a darker shade.
The fire here can be referenced to a woman and her life beautifully.
The way she can give and take life at the same time.
The ultimate light, the ultimate beauty. The last word, 'consuming' gives a strong impact.
Keep writing!
Thank you for being my very first reviewer! I appreciate your praise and insight on this poem! The beautiful thing about art (and perception in general) is that its an individual experience. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome
