A Tribute to Harry Potter

by lexieells

Published July 14, 2011

A letter started it all.
The boy who lived was my safe place.
I found comfort when I was laying in a hospital bed,
or out of school for weeks
through reading these books.
My love lies deep with the weathered pages.
It is purely literate,
genuinely loyal.
My childhood torn apart
as brutally as wetted paper.
Victim of abuse.
Divorce.
Disease.
And yet
Harry, Ron, and Hermione were there
through it all.
They helped me to escape.
I was part of a world that I could only dream of.
The reality and imagination,
were difficult to determine.
But I knew I was safe.
These people...
could not hurt me.
I was immune...
to all sickness.
And I was happy.
But utmost gratitude,
lies with everyone
from J.K. Rowling to the set designers.
They helped me
in a time of need.
They were there when others were not.
For this,
I am eternily grateful.
And I will never cease
to let my imagination ponder the idea
that somewhere...
Albus, James, Lily, and Rose are off at school...
learning how to transfigure a match into a needle,
for the first time.
Because in my heart,
all of this is true.
And I would not be me,
if it were not.

I can't even begin to express how moved I was when I read this poem. It's magical. That is the only word I can come up with to describe this craft of words being out together: magical. You've hit the nail on the head of describing in such a simple way how most of us all have felt as we read this story of a boy- we all escaped through Harry Potter and the story of his life. We were there for him and his friends through the good times and the bad times, we shared the laughs and we shared the tears.

Harry Potter simply isn't just a story, it's a search for home. That place where we all feel safe in the pages of what a story should be like, and how we become so attached those we read about.

What you wrote here is beautiful. Absolutely moving. I was nearly brought to tears as I read through it, and I honestly cannot say one negative thing about it.

This was a good poem, although it seemed a tad bit choppy. Otherwise, I loved it. ;D I absolutely love reading Harry Potter as I have grown up with it as being one of very few reprieves in this malevolent world, and with that which you included in your poem, I can deeply empathize. Congratulations on writing a magnificent piece. Keep up the good work!

I'm not the biggest harry potter fan but I like your poem. It really does make me feel a sense of belonging
to the world she created with the books and movies. It's a way to escape and to express the things which
reality cannot express. I like how you stated that it was there for you as if it were a loyal friend comforting you. I like
this mainly because movies and writing are my way of escaping from this world and when I concentrate I'm actually
good at it. Your poem is not perfect but no matter how great a writer is we all are with fault. I don't believe writing is right or wrong because grammar was created by man as a way to order our expression. Everything created by man isn't exactly
correct it's just a standard. So, keep on writing because your style is great.

I'll return the favor of your wonderful comments on my essay about Potter http://t.co/gQzc0GV. I did love that your tribute was more about how Harry helped and affected you and not as much about the series itself. I tried to go that way with mine, but I think there is an unstated imagery and beauty that poetry brings about in our minds that is unparalleled by simple prose and descriptive essay-writing. That's also what makes poetry so much harder to grasp and write than prose and dialogue. You touched on some very deep and sensitive issues here, and we all should thank you for having the courage to put them out on the public forum.

As you commented on my piece, Harry will never die as long as (as Albus said) he lives in the hearts of those that are still loyal to him. I feel like I could summon the proverbial Fawkes that represents the Harry Potter series with the loyalty that I show to it just as Harry did for Dumbledore in the Chamber of Secrets. Thanks for this great work of art.

wow, this is really good ! Its written very quitly should I say, the emotion in it doesn't hit the reader in the face. All the good parts of Harry Potter and how for eleven years of books and movies its helped kids get through alot. Its cut that you've put some thought into it, not many people admit to being huge Potter fans. I know I'm deefinetly one of them. Its good that you went into the second generation too. Keep writing!

Fix the grammar stuff and this will be great. I connect with this poem 100%, with Harry Potter done, it's like my childhood is officially over, it feels sad and happy at the same time. Like, how to put it... The Harry Potter series was one of my horcruxes, and now someone destroyed it.

Wow, this poetry was very appealing. I understood where you are coming from as I also am a fan of the Harry Potter books and movies..
This inspired me to do my own Harry Potter poetry, but I am not sure it will be as good as this.
You really brand the point across of what you were trying to show the readers.

Good Job!

I do, genuinely, appreciate your critisisim. However, though some parts of your response are completely right and partly due to my lack of expierence, I have to disagree with one thing. I think that even though one of the main concepts of poetry is trying to allow all types of readers to connect, this should stay based on this particular series. In my mind, while writing this, I had the idea that this poem would be something for only true Potter fans and emotionally strong readers to connect with. This particular set of literature has a very special meaning to me. And while I could change it to be something about books in general, I dont think I would be giving the series enough credit.

If you didnt like the poem, or the concept, I truthfully respect that 100% because this poem was not meant for everyone. It was to show my connections to the specific topic and those who can identify with it will probably be much more likely to understand and enjoy it. And those who read it and feel the same love I feel for Harry Potter about another set of books should be able to comprehend the poem to its fullest extent.

I apologize for any misunderstandings, and I'd like to thank you for all of your technical corrections.

Ah yes, we all must escape with our books. Its why some of us became writers, cause deep down, we all know the book must end and that life would ultimately take our immediate priority. When we write, we not only prolong that end, but we create our own, and in that a good lot of us find our peace.

Now, I think what struck me as off with this poem was that the structure, in itself, was a little sloppy. You don't have a rhyme scheme. There isn't a certain amount of syllables per each line. All in all, it just seemed like you were forgetting the idea of flow all together so that you could get this idea out. And I suppose in some instances, that is good. No poet is perfect. I just wish I could have seen a little more structure to this. A little more time spent, maybe. Like breaking it up into stanza's, even. larger poems like this are hard to take in one gulp.

The next thing I want to note is that you don't really let the reader dip their toes in. You just kind of throw them in. From start to finish, we already know what to expect. As a prose writer, this would be a bad thing. In poetry, its not always as such, but because of the style of diction you chose to use, it came across as being a little childish and juvenile. A poem dedicated strictly to emotion, yet no real substance being there.

So what I want you to do is first, give yourself a structure, whether that be freebased or not. Maybe have three stanza's where you wish to accomplish three different aspects of the poem. The first could be subtlety, where you kind of hint at the idea of connecting your love of Harry Potter with yourself. The second stanza could be primarily about how it helped. Then - and this is whats going to be the big game-changer - spend the last stanza of your poem kind of giving it away. Making people realize what you are trying to say. Connecting everything together. That tie is what usually makes a poem strong.

And lastly, I would like to note up on content.

I liked the idea you put across, but in a way, I didn't. You have some ups and downs going on here. Some times where you try imagery. Sometimes where you just want to get the idea out. That and you're not really beating around the bush that this is primarily about Harry Potter. The lovely thing about poetry is that you should be able to have others connect with the said piece. Opening it up to more people would probably be your best bet.

So maybe, instead of spending all your time trying to connect Harry Potter into your piece, why don't you spend it on books in general? That way, when someone older reads it, they see it for something more than just a poem dedicated to a childhood fad and into a more serious, emotional piece about books and life.

But these are all merely my opinions. I'm a prose writer, after all.

It's good. I love reading Harry Potter too! There are a few mistakes though. Mostly grammer. First, reread it all through and decide where to put the commas at the end up the lines. When you say 'But utmost gratitude,/ lies with everyone", I don't think there should be a comma between the two lines. But whatever you choose to do. I didn't see any symbols, but 1. I'm bad at that, 2. I don't think I looked hard enough, and 3. It's nearly midnight and I'm wiped out. Seriously, when you start thinking bugs are crawling on your arms but it turns out just to be your beauty marks, you should go to sleep. Other problems are just spelling errors, grammical. I suggest putting this into Word, if you have it, and checking spelling and stuff. Like when you say "And I will never sieze", you spelt (is that a word? It's too late to remember, sorry about this =])sieze right, I think, but the word used here should be cease, or something along those lines. Gosh, I'm going to stop it there because this is just getting worse as I go. Sorry, hope I could kind of help.
