Tomorrow...

PreviousNext

Every Monday at approximately 2:30 pm, I arrive home from a long day at school only to realize that the fun isn’t over yet. My beloved teachers have yet again offered me the splendid opportunity to further my education in my home; it’s time to start my homework. I pick up all of my school things--all twenty pounds of it--and schlep my way up to my bedroom to work on the excessive amount of homework.

As I sit on the floor to begin my journey into the wonderful world of knowledge, I think to myself, “Today will be the day...the day I finish all of my homework before six o’clock.” I always begin with the homework that will be due the next day, for that is of high priority. I usually begin with calculus, for math is my favorite subject and therefore is the easiest with which to begin.

I start off with a bang. I’m on a roll. I’m cruising through my calculus homework when a seemingly great idea pops into my head: “I should listen to some music!” I pick out a CD and pop it into my laptop and as it begins to play, I get lost in the music. No longer am I finding the derivative of a function, but rather singing along with the catchy tune blasting from my laptop. A book assignment that should take me twenty five minutes takes me at least an hour, if not longer.

Then I move on to any other homework that I am able to do while listening to music. This is anything that doesn’t include having to read something for comprehension, for I cannot do that with background noise. When I have finished all that is due the next day, I move on to studying for tests or quizzes that I may have. For some reason, I believe I can retain all of the required material while sitting in front of the television, but surprisingly, this is untrue. I can spend up to hours studying for a quiz because most of that time, I am actually watching a sporting event or other television program if there isn’t a good game on TV. I don’t know if I actually retain any of the information, but I end up studying the next morning anyway.

When I have finally finished all of that, it is usually around nine o’clock, considerably past my original goal of a six o’clock end time. I still have homework, but it is not due until Thursday or Friday.

“I can do it tomorrow,” I say to myself. When tomorrow arrives and it takes me until nine to finish my homework, I again tell myself that I can just do it tomorrow. There is always going to be a tomorrow...until tomorrow is the day the assignment is due. On Thursday night, I spend even longer doing homework, because I am doing not only the homework assigned that day, but also the homework I’ve known about since Monday, yet have preceded not to do for three days straight.

The weekends are even worse. When I get home on Friday, I throw down my school things in bitter disgust and proceed to make it over to my favorite chair to watch TV. I don’t even think about my homework or anything school related until Sunday night when it takes everything I have in me to sit down and finish my homework in preparation for a new week.

Every night when I am still doing homework at nine o’clock, I realize that I shouldn’t let so many things distract me. Every Sunday night I realize that I should try to finish all of my homework on Friday. I should start an assignment that’s due in four days the day it’s assigned and I should work on it a bit each day. I realize all of these things, yet each week I fall back into the endless cycle of procrastination. I never change my ways, even though I know I will have more free time if I do. Although I often procrastinate in some way or another, I always manage to get the job done. Procrastination always gets a bad rap, but what exactly is the problem with it? In the end, as long as I get all of my work done on time, it doesn’t matter how I got there.

This made me laugh. I like the use of the word "for" over and over again. It was a little odd, but I think it added to the humor over all. I also think you should re-categorize it into a short story.(I am new here so I don't know if that is possible.)
This sentence was a little awkward:
"I pick out a CD and pop it into my laptop and as it begins to play, I get lost in the music."
Maybe you could take out the second "and" and replace it with a period or semi-colon.

Over all I enjoyed you work. I can relate to it. I procrastinate a lot, and it is worse for me because i am home-schooled. Anyways, I look forward to reading more of your stuff.

Hey. This isn't really an essay, it's more of a short story. I love that you are highlighting the finer points of procrastination. Since this isn't an essay, and it doesn't have the descriptions of a short story... what exactly is it?
You always substitute the word "for" for the word "because" and it drives me crazy. No offense, I have OCD so pretty much everything drives me nuts.

This is anything that doesn’t include having to read something for comprehension, for I cannot do that with background noise.

The "for" just makes it seem old and Shakespearian and... weird. So yeah. "Because" is your new best friend.
The other thing, your essay/story/whatever just goes on and on about procrastination. It isn't informative, with fact. So you should make it a humorous short story. Try adding in more description. For example... "I'm frustrated when I don't finish my homework until late at night, it makes me want to tear my hair out." Just stuff like this. Although I love your very unique tone and style, it needs a little... zing.
Also, the last paragraph, you use informal language when you say "bad rap" and it isn't necessary. Just a tip.
I hope this helps. By the way, you had me laughing so hard my cheeks hurt at the end. This so describes the way I am with YWS.

Hi there, Laura! Cheetah here, ready to review your piece!

I really enjoyed reading this. Of course, I can totally relate to it. Procrastination is one of the most dangerous things. You don't know it's coming, you're numb to it, until it strikes. I liked your use of description. I especially liked this line:

As I sit on the floor to begin my journey into the wonderful world of knowledge,

I couldn't tell if this was sarcastic or not, but I liked it. You can interpret it different ways.

One thing I noticed, however, was this:

My beloved teachers have yet again offered me the splendid opportunity to further my education in my home

I think you could make this line a little clearer. Maybe instead of "further" you could put "expand" or "continue".

Also in this sentence something felt a bit off:

I pick out a CD and pop it into my laptop and as it begins to play, I get lost in the music.

Erasing the first "and" and replacing it with a comma would help the story flow better.

Other than that, this was really great! Writing comes out good if it's relatable, and you've definitely shown that. I'm looking forward to seeing what you're writing next. Thanks for sharing! :)

theres always the person who thinks they can correct anyone except themselves by noticing every single mistake they make except there own. i think this is great how you wrote it.i totally relate to you.
good job.
