Alex Carter
Chapter 1
I can remember so clearly. I can hear her laugh, I can feel her heartbeat. I remember her but no one else does. I remember Jane.
She had the same brown hair has me, and brown eyes. Her skin was light brown and smooth. I could tell that we were sisters. I can just feel it.
I'll never forget the day I heard her call me, I was six and I was playing at a deep creek. Most likely taller than me, someone yelled ' No Alex!' I stood upright and looked around, no one. But I was scarred, I left without every returning to the creek again. Then I remembered the dreams of when I was a baby, small and happy.
I remember her voice as just sang me to sleep and read to me. She'd make up stories of far away lands and fairies. All size and shapes and colors. And the moon, I loved those. I'll never forget the last night she told me a story. I was a few weeks away from being one year old and her story ended with 'The moon that’s so bright hugged the stars and then he told them goodnight.'
"Oh, Jane, I miss your voice."
It was that same night when Jane was in a car wreck, I was a baby still but even babies will have a memory of someone so close. But my mom and dad locked away anything with her face on it, even my baby book that she put notes in. Ten years later I can still remember that night.
The night when Jane was killed.
Bitter Taste
Chapter 2
It doesn't hurt to think of her that much, but I can still hear my parents crying late at night. Air turns cold sometimes, and I can still hear a faint sound of someone one saying 'Pretty, Alex.' And I'll fall asleep with dreams of Jane in my head.
Today is March 13th. Something was strange about today, I just couldn't put my finger on it. I pace my room and then I have an idea. I can go into the attic while my parents think I'm at school. Then, when they go to work I can go up stairs and look around. Perfect.
Not a moment to soon, I ran outside into the alley and hid there, across the street I saw my moms car leave, then my dad. I ran back across the street into my house which I opened with a lock magnet, don't ask me where I got it from. I found it, I swear.
I darted up the steps two at a time. I came up to a door that had a lock on it, the magnet wouldn't work on it so I went into my parents room and looked for a key that would fit. I twisted the door knob and went in.
I saw a lot of boxes but the ones I was looking for didn't have anything on it, it was just blank. And they were open. I peeked inside of one and there was a picture of Jane and an old diary, I picked it up and read the back, it read:
'Jane Mary Carter,
12 years old, Manson Dr.'
A tear streaked from my eye. Then I voice behind me said, " What are you doing up here?" I stood there frozen, it sounded like my mother, I turned slowly...talking slowly.
"This is my sister, mom! This is-," When I looked up I saw that it wasn't my mom, it was someone who I remembered, someone who looked like my mom but had see-through skin. I gasped. It was Jane.
Chapter 3,
Helpless Hope
I couldn't make sense of this, Jane was dead and yet she was here. I was standing within arms length. What was going on here ? She looked me down with a frown then sighed and smiled. A warm smile that remained me of the stories she told me when I was an infant.
"Pretty Alex. Shouldn't you be at school already ?" she asked.
"I came up here to find something." I said.
"Oh? Something about me ?" she said, then suddenly I was looking into an empty door frame. A cold gust of wind blew and ruffled my hair, I turned quickly toward the wind and saw Jane sitting by the box.
"I miss these days, going through my old things were one of my favorite pastimes, you know. A lot to look through, " then she sighed again, " Yes so much...."
She looked up at me then. She looked alive, but her skin was a bit see-through. She was wearing a cap, shorts, and a t-shirt that said 'Forever The Sickest Kids' a band I listened to all the time. She wasn't wearing any shoes and her hair was curled into ringlets. She was stunningly beautiful, and I began to grow jealous.
"Alex, this is not good for you. You needn't concern yourself with things that are not of your understanding. You must realize I made my own choice. You cannot change anything, you cannot do anything. You should quit while you're ahead. It would be much less painful for us all."
"No. I need you, Jane! Now more than ever. I don't understand much, but you have to help me. I'm losing sight of who I am. Why won't you help me ? Tell me a story like old times, Jane. Please."
She pursed her lips then rolled her eyes," I suppose you get your drama skills from my stories. But I guess one more wouldn't hurt....This isn't going to be a story though, it's going to be pictures that I drew. Each one of them has something special about them. I wrote something on the back of each one. I want you to read them aloud to me."
"Where are the pictures?" I ask.
"Under that stack of paper next to my baby picture."
I found three pictures, one that was a lamp in the desert, filled in the back ground were tiny stars and the moon. On the back of it three lines painted a new picture in my head:
Over a valley when the sun sets at night,
a little bright lamp fills the sky.
Then as it brightens our hearts begin to fly.

The next was a lunch box painting, with a hippie van on the sticker:
The only war is the war within ourselves,
The only anger we have is to something we don't like.
If we could only enjoy the little things, life would be better.
-J.C.
The next was a grave stone and a broken stick man lay dead in a coffin underground, this one was the hardest to read aloud. I looked at Jane and she was looking at the picture.
"It's okay, I'll read this one for you."
She read:
Even when darkness falls and trees die,
even when the world fells lost and you are helpless,
you help by staying alive, if you dare to care...
Please don't die. Keep hope alive.
-Matthew & J.C.
I up for Jane to only see a tear trickle down her eye. She sighs once more and disappears into the light of morning. I sit there for a moment and collapse. I cry and cry for hours, Jane didn't return that day. Which made it worse.
Chapter 4 The Hunt
It seemed like now everything in my life was a lie, it was all wrong. Jane was forgotten, she was missed by only me. I cannot fathom a reason for her things to be here, in a dusty old room in a box sealed up and put away.
So many questions raced through my mind, so many things and not enough time. But most of them all lied in a picture signed by Matthew and Jane herself. Who was Matthew ? A brother I never knew about ? I doubt it. A friend of Jane’s? Possible. Jane’s killer? I had to find out. I dug through another box and found a small black book. I opened it and found all sorts of writing, pictures, numbers. I was looking for something more specific, I flipped through pages of the book until I found what I was looking for.
There was about ten pages filled with phone numbers and address’s. I looked for a Matthew and I found about five of them. Matthew Langlois, Matthew O’ Conner, Matthew Dale, Matthew Fisher, and just a Matthew. No last name, just Matthew with hearts by his name. I saw a address, it was four homes down from mine. I had to wait until night when my parents would get home, after dinner I’ll tell them I had to get homework notes from a friend next door.
Once I did that I’d leave, I’d leave on the hunt to find Matthew. The unknown boy my sister loved. Or maybe my sisters killer.
My parents arrived home and found me there. Just in time because my school called and said I was absent, I had to fake my mothers voice like I do sometimes and said I just had a bad head ache and that I’d be back tomorrow. The plan worked out perfectly, I left the house at around seven o’ clock and set off to Matthews home. I marched up to the house and rang the door bell. The guy who answered was about eighteen easy. Clean cut, dark clothes, black hair. He looked like trouble, I couldn’t imagine my sister liking someone like this. He screamed evil.
But he didn’t when he saw me, a complete look of shock crossed his face has he appraised me, from shock to horror to confusion back to shock then to sad. It looked like he was going to cry right in front of me. But then stopped, he frowned as he looked me over I deicide it was enough of the stand off. It’s time we talked.
“Are you Matthew ?” I asked with distaste.
“What’s it to you?” he said with a smirk.
“Well….” I said backtracking, all sign of remorse was cut clean off his face but something was off in his eyes, “ I know something that I want you to help me with.”
“Hope you not selling cookies, little girl, ‘cause I can’t help you there. Now run along before the creepers come out to play.” he scoffed and started to close the door.
“It’s about my sister, Jane Carter. I believe she knew you, seemed like she favored you a bit.”
He seemed to stop for a minute and then collapsed to his knees. He put his hands in his black hair and gasped, “Jane! I knew you’d come back!” But he wasn’t talking to me. He was talking to someone next to me, clear as night as she was day I finally-in over nine years- heard my sister laugh. It was a beautiful sounding thing, like a bird singing in the morning.
A lot happened in that time frame. I found out who Matthew was, Jane’s old boy friend. Jane was there with him the night of the crash. Jane herself needed to rest in peace but something held her here. A tiny spark in my imagination wondered if she was still here because of Matthew. Or some higher reason.
The question I wanted to ask would have to wait until tomorrow night when my parents were asleep. I had to free Jane from this world. I just didn’t know how. Matthew would help but we would need more people. So I got out Jane’s phonebook and Matthew would get the names of the others who were in the car wreck. There were six people in the car. Jane and Matthew among them. Four were alive, all I had to do was find them. They were everywhere around this city. Once I found them I’m sure they would help. They had to, Jane needed all the help she could get. So once again I went out on the hunt for the unknown.
Chapter 5 Broken
Matthew walked me home, Jane was in the air around us. I could just feel her. Matthew and I didn’t talk much, talking would have to wait until tomorrow. I couldn’t miss school or my parents would be upset, but I knew I couldn’t concentrate with all this going on. It began to rain and Matthew and I said our goodbyes. Jane left then, but for how long? How long would this ghost stay, how long could I live in the low light?
I said my good nights to my parents and headed up to bed. It would be a long day tomorrow, who knew what would happen? I know I didn’t, I was glad Matthew was going to be there. Even though I knew little about him, there was much more under the deep dark cloaked boy everyone saw. Behind the surface was another human. Who lost someone just like me.
I didn’t eat anything for breakfast that morning. I dressed in a black jacket, black camouflage pants, and a white shirt. I stood in front of my school and looked for any sign of Jane. I gave up and went inside and went in for eight hours of learning.
I didn’t get on the bus to go home because I had an unexpected visitor come get me in front of the building. It was Matthew, the last person one Earth I’d expected to see in front of my school. I got into his car and we drove off down the street.
“Do you know where you’re going?” I asked him.
“I’m going back to my high school. That’s where everyone in the car is, still trying to get through school. Their brains have been racked up so much. One of the guys in the back name’s is Mark Fisher, he failed freshman year twice. Then Junior three times, then they moved him to senior but he failed that a few times. This is his fourth time going in, it seems he doesn’t have a prayer of getting out.
“The girl who was sitting next to Mark is now in special education, she hit her head in the wreck when she was in middle school. She was the youngest among the group, but she lived. The other two weren’t so lucky, there names are Mike McDaniel and Cody Williams. They failed each grade in high school three times- this year, just like Mark- will be there last shot. It’s either graduate or go to a different school.”
While he talked over it and I wondered about him, “ What about you? You were driving, so you should have gotten the short end of the stick, right?” he stopped the car and we got out in front of the school.
He got the door for me but stood there when I got out and started at me through my eyes.
“Sometimes bad people are lucky, little girl. Sometimes the good people die and the bad people stay to suffer.” he harshly.
“So which one are you, Matty ?” Whoa, what did I just call him?
A look of complete horror washed on his face, I hadn’t meant to say his name like that. I didn’t know him enough to call him a nickname, my voice was not mine it was someone else’s.
“I’m the bad guy. I’ve always been one.”
I wanted to help him, to caress his face and tell him it was okay. Though my voice may not have been mine at that moment, my hands were. I walked into the school with him feeling confused.

Thanks and no problem, I've been busy as well. I haven't even had enough time to writer another chapter.
Hello there

I'm really sorry I took this long to give you a review. I'm here for long so I'll make it quick one.
I think that you have really good skills when it comes to keeping the reader in suspense. I like the story line and how it goes well with the title.
You need to watch out though for grammar, we all struggle with it but I know that with more practice and more writing it can improve.
I'm sorry I cannot give you a detailed review right now but I hope my comments will go a long way.
Keep writing
I'm working on new chapters now, I'm going to add about two or three more chapters onto it. (:
I really enjoyed the initial three chapters, my interest sparked by, 'Ten years later I can still remember that night. The night when Jane was killed.' in the opening chapter but from there on The Diary of Jane seemed to lose something for me.
The story became a little random and Matthews reaction to seeing Alex at the door seemed a little dramatic, as did the ending after calling him 'Matty'. Also, I didn't feel that the ending was all that strong, unless you intend to continue The Diary of Jane.
Other than that, you're writing really is very good and I'd be interested in reading more of your work sometime.
