I sit there in the bright blue chair layering on the thing that can change a girl from bland to stunning in under 10 minutes. It’s surprising how approximately every girl uses it and guys still say a girl is magnificent when they don’t see her without it. I think to myself, what if every girl stopped? What if we purely for one week went as ourselves. Every man will need to look at women closely to finally realize our true charm. That is the miracles on the inside and not the outside. What if one guy, just one, loved me for me. I knew they were entirely just ’what ifs’ and it shall not actually happen.
I hear the bus comes to a steady stop outside my house. I dab on my final touches of mascara, grab my shiny silver book bag and chase after it. Steadily we fully step in line to get on the big bright yellow bus. I don’t understand how such a rachet nasty thing could be so important to thousands of kids each day. How I think of it is if we are on this thing around an hour and a half, a day for 180 days, it should be cleaner than this. What if someone cared actually respected the things we see every day. I step on the first step avoiding getting hit by the paper wads being thrown.
I find my seat in the very back two seats behind the most gorgeous man ever made on this planet, Max Tucker. I have been in love with him ever since the first day I gazed over him in the 6th grade class with Miss Mayberry. I remember him sitting next to me that whole year. We talked on occasion, but he was always too busy staring at Layla Marie. It is true, she was one of the prettiest girls in the class. If only he could have taken the time to realize that she never liked him and I was sitting there all along. Truthfully this is real life and I learned the hard way that things do not always work out near how you plan them too.
We come to a jolting stop at the school. I take a deep breath readying myself for all the mishaps in Northridge High School. I stand out of my seat and step behind Max, I can smell his axe cologne. This was just the time for things to mess up, Billy stands up and spills a red kool aid drink all over Max and I. Who knows why he had a red kool aid on the bus, but all I care about is that it just spilled all over my brand new white t-shirt and blue jeans.
“What the heck man,” Max yells in frustration.
“Sorry I tried to stand up to get my bag and it slipped,” Billy rambles off excuses so Max won’t punch him.
“Whatever it’s cool with me I needed a new outfit anyways but you better talk to Ally about how she is, she looks in enraged,” Max says in a cool guy, i’m just going to brush it off, voice and he dashes off the bus.
I stand in shock that Max knew my name and even had a cute little nickname for me, Ally, that goes through my head a million times at light speed I think about his amazing vocabulary for a cool kid, I totally forget about the kool aid.
“Allison, are you okay. I’m sorry I must have bumped something and slipped,” Billy says still rushing to get off the bus.
“Oh, no it is fine. I’ll just go to the bathroom and wipe it off,” I say trying not to sound frustrated with him.
“Well alright, have a good day,” Billy says walking into the school.
“Yea… you to Billy,” I mutter still thinking about Max.
I step off the noisy bus and into the blue and yellow lined school trying to find the nearest bathroom before anyone else sees me. I turn right and head into the nearest bathroom. This is one of the newer ones the school has just redone. Luckily I made it into one of the stalls when I hear Layla walk in…
“Oh my gosh, did you see what she was wearing, it looked as if she got dressed in the dark,” Layla says with an evil tone in her voice.
“Haha I know, and if she thinks its the new trend maybe she should go back to the 80s” Lilly snorts and re applies her make-up.
I wonder who they are talking about. Probably some innocent victim of their evil schemes. I think to myself, what if everyone got along? What if we all treated everyone how we wanted to be treated. Obviously Layla wouldn’t want to be laughed at in the bathroom of school, so that means she would be nice to people for once. Right?
I wipe off my shirt and get it as close to white as it could possibly get and step out.
“Oh look it’s little Allison and it looks like she had a little mishap, haha” Layla giggles trying to sound cool, while Lilly laughs with her.
“Shut up Layla, if you didn’t know, Billy spilled kool aid all over Max and I today so you can just shut it,” I stutter making sure to choose my words wisely because anything I say will probably be used against me.
“Yea, sure he did I bet it was you trying to get close to Max with your sick twisted way. I hope you know he’s never ever going to like you, just like any other boy in the school,” Layla yells in my face and then struts out of the bathroom with Lilly not far behind.
Right then and there I wished that I could just go and yell something back, but I knew that would be one of the worst choices yet. What if we all weren't so afraid of what people would say if we spoke our mind, Not caring what would happen next. The world would be full of people who spoke their mind and didn’t hide in the dark.
I step out of the clean bathroom and work my way around the huge school. I make it just in time for the bell to ring as I step in the enormous classroom and make my way around to my seat in the very right back corner by the tan book cabinet. I look over and see Max two rows away talking to his friends, oh that dreamy smile. It makes me remember why all the girls in chemistry adore him. I pull my Algebra book out and act like in working when the teacher looks at me, but in really thinking about Max.
The bell rings and all the kids in class start rushing out laughing and giggling. I follow them quietly behind when I feel someone tap on my shoulder…
“Hey, you didn’t look so good on the bus, are you okay?” Max whispered in a dreamy voice.
“Yea, I was just a little shocked. I really did not expect that,” I mutter quietly.
“Haha, I didn’t expect that either. You seemed to have cleaned up your shirt really good, mine is totally ruined. Do you wanna go to the mall later with me? I mean, I need some new clothes and you could probably help me find some nice outfits.” Max laughs lightly and scratches his head unsure of what I would say.
Everything I have ever wanted passes through my head. I felt like I was going to pass out right then and there, but I knew I needed to get the words “yes” out before I did. It felt like I was flying high on cloud 9.
“Yes, I would love too,” I practically yell.
“Awesome so… I will see you at 6,” Max says and then walks off.
My heart was going a million miles an hour, my smile you couldn’t hide. I was bursting with joy. Just then I ran into my bestfriend of 5 years, Annabell. We have been through everything together, she was my other half. I couldn’t get through anything without her.
“Hey Allison, Why so happy?” Annabell asked delightfully.
“Guess who has a date at 6 with Max!” I practically yell.
“Yay! I will come over at 5 to help you get ready!” she rushes off down the hall.
I walk into my 2nd period class, Chemistry. Who knew a class so close to the morning could be this boring. Layla is in this class which is probably the other reason this class drags on and on. When I was younger I use to love Chemistry. I love working with animals, dissecting frogs, and learning about all those animals. We are learning about DNA and how nucleotides are formed right now, not my favorite topic. Now I love Algebra, maybe because Max is in that class and Layla isn’t. Max was so cute with the kool-aid spilt on his shirt. It is terrible that it happened, but I am okay with it on me. When it landed on him his soft blue eyes got so big, I almost wanted to laugh. I can’t wait till next period when I have class with him and sadly Layla. She does the same thing every period. Just like now. She sitting in the back of class with her doubles giggling and disrupting the class. Mrs. Howard has gave up all hope on getting them to work and is just letting them fail now.Yet I sit here gazing off into space and get yelled at for not answering a simple question.
“Allison!” Mrs. Howard is yelling.
“Yes Mrs.?” I reply startled by the yelling.
“ I asked you a question,” Mrs.Howard says angrily.
“I… um … I did not hear the question,” I mumble.
“Well maybe you should listen more,” She darts to the other side of the room.
I sit back in the chair and try and hide myself. How humiliating. What if Max was in here and saw that. That wouldn’t have been as bad as who actually saw, Layla. What a way to end my life.
“Yea, Allison. Why don’t you listen. You should listen to me when I say that Max will never like you,” Layla looks at Lilly and giggles.
Oh how I hated the rich preppy girl giggle. My “giggle” if thats what you want to call it sounds like a horse on steroids. I’m glad that I don’t have a preppy girl giggle anyways that would mean I could be one of them and treating people like there nothing is not one of my best qualities.
“You don’t know what he thinks. I bet you’re just lying so me and him don’t get close, like you want too,” I awkwardly say regretting it right when it comes out of my mouth.
Layla stands out of her seat, “At least he has some interest in me unlike you, like in 3rd when he can’t even keep his eyes off of me.”
I knew it was true. I have looked over enough and saw him staring at her to be able to see it. I just wish he would be able to see that I would actually like him back.

Miracles should probably just be 'miracle.' It sounds kind of odd to be plural there.
Who's the "we" there? Where'd all these people come from? You need to spend some more time developing the scene.
And what does "rachet nasty" mean?
And here begins what sounds like a very stereotypical, sterile story. Oppressed girl loves "the most gorgeous man ever made" who only has eyes for the evil beauty enemy of the oppressed girl. This site has some pretty good advice for writing relationships, and I think you would grow greatly as a writer by reading some of these articles.
So no one's ever called her that before? Ever? Ally is a very common nickname for Allison. It's not surprising Max would call her that.
And the way all the characters are acting. It's very scripted and flat. They don't behave like normal people. Just because someone's spills a drink all over you doesn't mean you're instantly in the mindset of "I'm going to punch that little punk." Angry, understandable. But instant fight-mode? Probably not.
Try reading that scene aloud and see if it sounds like how normal people behave and talk. I think you'd find that your ear will tell you more than your mind does about human behavior.
So we have more unrealistic characterization. The school girl bully's now shouting in Ally's face? Does everyone who really interacts with Ally feel the need to tread all over her like she's worthless? I think you're starting to edge near the Mary Sue line. Be careful there.
Two things. One, that should be present tense "whispers," not past tense "whispered." Two, you make it sound like he's gone from "ignoring" Ally to trying to be as seductive as possible in the course of just a few paragraphs. Why can't he talk normally?
You say the exact same thing for two consecutive statements by Ally. True, other characters speak in between her cheering, but that's the exact same dialogue tag. Give readers a little more variety.
This is probably the best part of the entire piece. Short, specific, and intensely visual, that's a description that works. That's your true style shining through, and something you should search out in your writings and hone. Keep developing that voice.
Hope this helps!
This does help a lot. Thanks for reviewing
Ratchet nasty- can mean crazy but usually just nasty. rachet=nasty
I went through and fixed the things you said. Thanks
hey there! here to review for you!
So I love where this is going. I love the ideas and I love how her character is relate able. Everyone goes through the awkward "does he/she like me" stage. Worst. Thing. Ever. Anyway...I did enjoy this and PLEASE let me know when the next section (hopefully sooner rather than later, impatience) is out.
Only a few things I saw wrong. Grammar and punctuation. But the thing that really got me was the subjects. First, you said Max was in chemistry with you and then you said she pulled out her algebra book. Which I was like...wwwwhhhatttt? and then you were describing her chemistry class. In chemistry you don't learn about animals. dissecting, or DNA. That's biology. I love accuracy when reading about things. Even though this is not a true story do research on things like that or use life experiences. Sorry, I am not trying to be annoying...I have just taken all of those classes like mostly everyone has and chemistry, unfortunately, did not cover that making bio my favorite science to take (hence why I am not a biology major...even though you didn't know that...but now you do!!:D) Anyway back to your story...
Yes this was fabulous and I want to see more. Please message me or chat me if I am on to tell me when it is out. I want to see how this ends for Ally!!(:
Thank you,
Laura
Thanks for reviewing it.
I do understand how that can be confusing and I will fix that and the biology thing. I have wrote many more pages since then and should be publishing more soon, so I will be diffidently getting back to you.
thanks again!
Well done! I rather like where this story is going. Dispite the few spelling mistakes and couple of grammatical errors, I believe you did really well.
Hello Kelsey99,

Magenta here as according to your request. Wow, you are certainly the active YWS member! Welcome to the site, as I see that you've just joined today and have already received your first star and submitted this work. If you need any help or a review, you can always ask me. I see that you are a good writer and I am glad that you joined the Young Writer's Society. Alright, I just have a couple of comments and suggestions to make for you as you continue on in your writing.
Let's start with your first paragraph.
"I sit there in the bright blue chair layering on the thing that can change a girl from bland to stunning in under 10 minutes. I knew they were entirely just ’what ifs’ and it shall not actually happen."
I admit that I was slightly confused with this first sentence. "I sit there in the bright blue chair layering on the thing"? It was just a bit mixed up. I would also suggest having "10 minutes" be spelt out as "ten minutes". It's just some nitpick of mine. No worries. Thi
s part "when they don't see her without it" was also a bit confusing. Does that mean that they see her with it or that they never see her without it? Perhaps you might want to change that a bit? A comma here would be better,"What if we, purely for one week, went as ourselves." I do like that concept that you proposed in the beginning. What if?
Wow! You are really a great writing. Your story communicates with the reader and we can emphasize with the main character. You do well, especially in the third paragraph when you explain your "crush" situation. Sounds just like the song,"You Belong with Me".
"“Whatever it’s cool with me I needed a new outfit anyways but you better talk to Ally about how she is, she looks in enraged,” Max says in a cool guy, i’m just going to brush it off, voice and he dashes off the bus."
Okay, I would just change this a little. I would first put a comma after "whatever" and add a period after 'it's cool with me". Another thing would be to change "anyways" to "anyway" and take out the "in" before "enraged". Here, I'll just re-write it below with some of the corrections I would make to it.
"Whatever, it's cool with me. I needed a new outfit anyway, but you should talk to Ally, she looks upset," Max says in a cool-I'm-just-going-to-brush-it-off voice and he rushes off the school bus."
"I walk into my 2nd period class, Chemistry. Mrs. Howard has gave up all hope on getting them to work and is just letting them fail now.Yet I sit here gazing off into space and get yelled at for not answering a simple question."
I would first suggest writing "2nd" as "second" and I would not capitalize the subject which is "chemistry". It doesn't need to be capitalized unless it is specified. A comma would be suitable after the phrase "When I was younger". "I can't wait till" could be changed to "until" of you wanted it to be, although I think it is fine the way that you have it.
Other than those few things, I really think that this is a great piece. I love the way that you write and I see some real potential in this. Thanks for asking me to review this work. Wait, how did you find me?
~ Magenta
Thanks very much. I went through and changed the parts that you said and put in the punctuation. This was very helpful. Thanks for reading
Hey, Kelsey! Welcome to YWS!
This has some potential. Everything flowed, all expressions cemented by effective transitions. The characters were also realistic. I could walk by them on the street, they're so well-developed.
This just registered as unbalanced. The middle was loaded with dialogue. "Tell" as opposed to "show." As a result, I received little detail on her surroundings, and the exposition remained undeveloped. A few facts hovering, unsure what to do.
But the beginning shows more promise. I love how you threaded a bit of the middle through the beginning. Subtle hints, if you may:
I was curious as to how you'd incorporate this philosophy into the rest of the story. Great attention grabber, established a wonderful impression from the start.
Also love that you left room open for interpretation. You didn't go crazy describing the mole on a character's face. But your descriptions were elaborate enough to paint an image. Okay, I know this sounds cruel and unjustified, but: I'd just appreciate more reason as to why the narrator has a crush on Max. What makes Max attractive? Physically and personality-wise?
It stings when someone you like likes someone else and doesn't know you like them. Wow, that's a lot of likes. I think the emotion really shone clear here. I'd just recommend taking some vacations inside the characters' heads. This is also a cliché topic. Try sculpting it something unique; add a little twist. Make the agony more real.
Otherwise, great job. Keep up the good work!
