E - Everyone

In Short Stories

A/N: I wrote this for my creative writing class and I thought I'd share it here

                   Solace

And I don't want the world to see me

'Cause I don't think that they'd understand

When everything's made to be broken

I just want you to know who I am

-Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls

Lotus had always felt like she was a tattered piece of clothing surrounded by designer fashion. She felt like nobody truly understood her and she yearned for just one fairy out of the millions that existed to understand her and love her for who she was. But, the only problem with love is that it’s unreliable. There is never any guarantee that the person you love will stay. However, Lotus still longed for someone to know her. She wanted someone to really know her, and not just on the surface. She wanted someone to know her better than she knew herself and she was beginning to lose hope that anything remotely similar to that would ever happen to her.

That was until he came along. Frost. He was a mysterious fairy that had many secrets hidden beneath the surface, but he covered it up with jokes and cocky remarks. Frost was a mystery. And so was Lotus.

Now, let’s get one thing straight. Lotus never believed in soulmates. She just never thought that it was realistic to have one person that was made for you. That was until she met Frost. He changed everything for her.

They met on a cold and gloomy day. Frost had just ran away from his home after having an argument with his father, who he had never gotten along with. He just couldn’t stand it anymore. So, he left.

Lotus had also run away. But not from her family. She ran off during her magic lessons after completely humiliating herself in front of the other fairies. She flew for who knows how long and eventually sat herself down on a cold, hard rock in the middle of the icy plains north of her home in Iris Cove. That was when she saw a figure in the distance. It was Frost. His silvery colored hair shimmered from the snow that was falling all around them. Frost could immediately tell that something was wrong when he saw Lotus’s distressed facial expression.

After that day, Frost began to help Lotus with her magic. He helped her realize that her fear of failure was causing her to not be able to produce as much magic as the other fairies. The other fairies may not have been able to understand why Lotus couldn’t use her magic as well as them, but Frost did. Behind all of the humor he hid behind, he understood her.

Each time they met, they became more entranced with each other. They began to notice every little detail about each other. Frost began to notice the way that Lotus’s short black hair curled around the bottoms of her ears. He noticed how she fidgeted with the amethyst pendant she wore around her neck when she was nervous or focused. Lotus started to pay attention to each time Frost immediately tried to change topics whenever the topic of family came up and how he made jokes to diffuse serious situations.

Like how all the other stories go, the two fairies had a connection that they tried to ignore but they simply couldn’t. Throughout all of the hardships of their lives, the connection that blossomed between them was like a small plant managing to grow amidst all the darkness of the forest it was in. It was unexpected, but it brought peace to both of their lives. They saved each other.

Lotus was scared of people seeing her for who she truly was, but when it came to Frost she couldn’t help but want him to know who she truly was. Little by little, she began to open up to him. She was a flower that survived the winter then began to bloom when spring came around. Frost was her spring.

So, Lotus risked it all. She put herself out there even though it was the thing that terrified her the most about living. But to her, the risk was worth it. Any risk would be worth it for him. And thankfully, he returned her emotions with utmost sincerity.

Lotus never took risks, but she would be forever grateful that she took that one risk. Otherwise, who knows if she would have ever been able to find someone as perfect for her as Frost. She found solace with him.

Hi! Your writing is really good! I like the poem(?) format intro and your characters are quite well written and the story is just overall great.

However, your verb tense is sometimes inconsistent and you could try to think about if the words you choose are the best option. For example, you could replace 'grateful that she took...' with 'glad that she took...'.

Mostly, your work is excellent!

This is very good! I like the metaphors you use, especially the first one you use to describe Lotus, and the connection the two fairies feel because of both of them being outcasts is very sweet. Your use of descriptive language is also very strong, I like how you used very specific details such to describe the characters like with Lotus's amethyst pendant.

One thing I would recommend in the future is using more dialogue to establish the dynamic between the two fairies, especially since their relationship is the main focus of the story.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work in the future!

Thank you for the feedback! I may or may not be working on another story that takes place in the same universe....

:0 looking forward to reading it
