Mindstorm

Hi all, this is my first submission here, and I hope you like it. I didn't really know what genre this (and most of the other things I write) belongs to because I don't usually write "stories" but rather expressions of a particular thought that I have in my mind. Anyway, let me know what you guys think.

Mindstorm

Unrequited love. I never thought I'd ever be on its pier, watching the dark horizon for any sign of light. The answer to the question of whether or not it really is unrequited has yet to emerge condensed from its cloudy nature. But it's always raining in my mind and as the drops fall, they speak to me what has yet to emanate from the synchronous production of her perfect lips and her perfect voice: she does not love me.

It is a storm that has brewed in my mind; drawing its strength from the unrelenting current of my pessimistic, yet rational thoughts. How could she possibly love me? What good would I do her? I am nothing compared to the one she still thinks about at night.

The sound of the storm deafens me and this deafness has muted my speech. I can never tell her the truth. But she already knows, doesn't she? How could she not know? She simply refuses to acknowledge it. Yes, that's it. In this way, we both have the same goal: to preserve the friendship that has served us so well. If there is one thing that has never failed us thus far, it is that friendship.

But the tempest in my mind never calms. Her love is its only subsider. How I wish it would end! Being a firm believer in the power of honesty, I constantly question my silence. I could tell her the truth. But I have never faced rejection as my previous endeavors have been few and far between and have always involved the certainty that comes with requitement. Though, I am not afraid of rejection, but rather of its consequences on the friendship that we both hold dear. We would never be the same again. She would question my every gesture, my every action, my every touch, and all of my motives.

No, I cannot risk this.

But, what if, by some misfiring of the neurons that control her rationality, she does in fact, love me?

Nonsense.

This storm will continue to live on, and will surely consume me, from the inside out. That is my fate.

Wow.

Yeah. That's what I said when I finished this.

Wow. This was so cool! You really made us feel for the narrator, and it was all in all wonderful. My favorite line was:

But, what if, by some misfiring of the neurons that control her rationality, she does in fact, love me?

This was absolutely stunning. No grammar mishaps, not anything. Nothing to critique, but to say that this was absolutely stunning.

I loved it! I will be waiting for more of anything that you write! Amazing!!

P.S. Also, if you ever do write a novella/novel, this would be a fantastic prologue. Anywho, great job!

Interesting work. It reminds me somewhat of the character of Gatsby in "The Great Gatsby." It was mainly the image of the pier and the person standing on it looking for the light. Gatsby does something similar in the book. (A good read if you have never read it... If you have, you know what I am talking about...)

I agree with Gahks that this could be longer and more explicit, but in the same way, I like it how it is. It is what I refer to as a 'one-shot', and is a snapshot of time in which the reader has to learn to empathize with the character in the brief moment that you see them. It is like a single scene in a movie.

This is a great piece of fiction, almost like a poem. One-shot or short story, it is your call. Either way, you are a very talented writer. Welcome to YWS!

You are honoured in being my first reviewee!

You clearly show us, the reader, the despair the narrator has at not sensing anything from the relationship. I really like your storm imagery. Now I feel that you could develop this and give us some insight into the events that led up to this moment. How did the narrator get to the point that he felt he was on a sinking ship? How and why did he get attracted to her in the first place? Where did it all go wrong for him? What was she really like?

These questions should help to further your piece and transform your character from someone simply bemoaning his current state into a nuanced person whom the audience can identify with.

Good luck!

You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You’re moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You’ve just crossed over into… the Twilight Zone.
