Just something short for you guys. I'll continue the rest later. This is probably gonna suck though. xD

"Park right here James. Alright, you know the plan. Me and Chester will take out the cops in the car outside the the house and you and Chip will storm through the back and put a bullet through the rat's head. Grumbled Rust, in his gruff, hoarse voice while being as calm and collective as ever. Rust was no stranger to this kind of task. He is the bosses' brother and has been his most trusted man till this day, so despite the worry and rumination hidden within James, the new kid on the block, he was confident this would go as smoothly as planned.

"Alright rookie, time to prove your value" uttered  Chip in his soft, soothing voice, his piercing bright blue eyes glowing in the dark eerie streets of suburban New York.

Alright, time to prove he is equal to the task at hand. Time to prove he can swim with the big fish. He felt his heart pounding as they approached the rat's house, feeling the moral weight of what is to come but he had to set aside morality and do what is necessary.

James, Chip, Rust and Chester approached the house and split up as agreed upon.  "Alright James, let's do this" uttered nervously by Chester, who started only a few months ago as did James, a clean, shaven, blue eyed, blonde guy whose charm and good looks never ceased to impress James. But perhaps pining over someone you're about to break a good deal of laws with wasn't the priority at that point.

Bang, bang. The faint whisper of Rust's and Chip's silencer hung over the air as they took out the two cops in the car. James briefly glanced over at his fellow rookie companion in slight sadness, knowing full well the emotional impact this will have on him but the man was a rat, he was going to testify against his boss and the rest of them over the shootout in the Telford compound and that couldn't happen.

Crushing the back door with his foot, James and Chester stormed through the house and pointed their silencers at any one else who might inconveniently be in the house. A wave of relief went through James as there was no need to increase any more casualties with the blood of innocents.

Knowing how close they were to the target, James and Chester hurried their way upstairs and saw the only room in the top floor. Realising the rat has locked his door, James and Chester kicked the door numerous times, and it finally gave way. Red faced with terror, the rat made pointlessly stepped back a few paces, quivering in fear and trembling uncontrollably at the sight of two men pointing their guns at him. "Please, don't do this. I'll leave town I won't testify I promise"

This was the moment, he knew he had to do it, despite his conscience pleading for him not to. Finger ever so slightly on the trigger, he hesitated a few seconds, all he wanted to do was let him ago but orders were orders. "Do it" uttered Chester whom James could tell was feeling the same level of doubt as he was. Knowing what he had to, he pressed hard on the trigger and watched as the rat fell lifelessly to the floor.

Decorated in red, the floor rattled ever so slightly upon the fall of the rat. Watching in solemn and silent reflection at the hole in the rat's head, James felt a wave of grief hit him. He'd killed before yes, but never like this. Never had he had to kill an unarmed person in a such cold blooded fashion. He could handle killing a few scum-bags in a shoot-out, but striking someone who poses no mortal threat is a extremely difficult  to bear. "Had to be done" he muttered to Chester, who had the same grief-stricken, ruminative face as James did at that moment. "Yeah" Chester grumbled sadly. "Let's just hope we don't have to kill any more today. Two cops and a rat is enough for me" James uttered. They both went carried the body down the wooden steps, having a hard time dragging the body smoothly without cracking the rats head on the stairs. James could feel the rat's weight hold him back. Covered in pounds of lard, the rat was definitely weighing both James and Chester down. They were both well built, sturdy, athletic  men, who looked more like Abercrombie and Fitch models than mobsters. They managed to hold their ground as they carried the fat man out the door to dispose of his body with the help of Chip and Rust.

"We got rid of the cops" grumbled Rust in his slightly difficult to understand voice. "We're gonna need a little help here with this guy" muttered James, feeling weary from having to carry the rat. "Yeah I can tell" Chip said in soft voice, cracking half a smile. Not at all feeling excited about the task at hand, they all froze in their tracks as did the girl, who unfortunately happened to stumble on the scene in the wrong place wrong time. Terrified and trembling at the sight of four men dragging a dead body, the pretty, brunette girl, looking as though she was in her early twenties, resorted to scream. Chester grabbed her aggressively, placing his hand over her mouth.

"Aw for fuck sake, another blood of an innocent" James sadly thought to himself. "If I let go, will you promise not to scream?" asked Chester, which mildly made the girl relax a little, considering the situation she was in.  "I promise we won't hurt you" said calmly and softly by Chester. Chester was great with consoling people, it was one of the most attractive traits James found in him but in this case, consoling the girl was unnecessary.

"Okay" the girl muttered nervously but clearly feeling a sense of relief.

"I'm sorry girl, it pains my heart to do this" said Chip, in a sad voice. Bang.

One clean shot to the head and the girl instantly fell flat to the floor.

"Great. Now two bodies to clean up after" Rust grumbled.

Feeling the emotional toll of all the shit they had to do today, they finally finished disposing of the rat and the innocent, girl they had to kill.

"Glad we're finally done for the day" Chip muttered solemnly, his unkempt, rusty beard standing out. Chip was a veteran at this kind of work.He was reliable, effective and wise, and there were fewer men better at what he does. His no nonsense, no questions attitude was a prominent feature but that never outweighed the compassionate, caring and thoughtful compass he  possessed.

"Yeah, Chip, After today's work, I need to get some pussy", Rust grumbled, half cracking a smile.

"And I some cock" James retorted, warranting a good group chuckle.

Trying to emotionally cast aside the deeds committed earlier that night, James blew his seed into some guy he met at the bar´s mouth. James made it his nocturnal duty to satisfy his sexual needs as much as possible, especially after emotionally or physically demanding tasks. James didn´t need to try hard to catch sexual attention.

He got up from the guy´s incredibly comfortable bed, putting on his clothes, looking to say his farewells and leave, not planning to stay there longer than he had to."Well it´s been great fun, Jerry, I really needed that. I´ll call you sometime" James said in his usual charming, refreshing tone.

"It´s Jared, and no you won´t" the guy retorted sarcastically.

"Yeah you´re right" James said, smiling.

"Well take care of yourself, Jerry" James winked at the guy, who in return rolled his eyes at him. The eye rolling was the last thing James saw before he closed the door behind him. Walking through the cold, lively streets of New York, James reflected solemnly on recent events, the bloodbath at the Telford compound, the rat, the girl they killed earlier and how things were going to play out now.

The Telford´s were the rival mob. They were scumbags who mainly dealt in heroin, and exporting girls for slavery. Thankfully, James was working for a mob who only dealt in the former. He couldn´t ever handle making sure that frightened and possibly beaten and bloody girls get sold to some piece of shit scumbag who´d use the girls for sexual pleasure.

One night, the Telford´s rolled up on 7 of James´ comrades who were about to export a van of heroin to customers and slaughtered them all with machine guns, stealing the heroin van in the process. The boss called for immediate and brutal retaliation. It was mayhem at the Telford´s, 35 casualties. 20 of the Telford men, 10 of James´ and 5 prostitutes. James is still haunted by that night. Never before had he experienced such violence and chaos. James killed three men that day. After most of the killing was done, James, Rust and another veteran named Bobby stormed into a room. 5 hookers were hiding in that room hoping to find a save haven from all that bloodshed. Terrified for their lives and begging them not to hurt them. Of course, they never leave loose ends. James was tasked with shooting all of the hookers but he couldn´t, he hesitated for a moment or so, but it was too hard for him. He could not gun down 5 innocent women. So Rust got tired of dicking around and pulled out his handgun and ruthlessly slaughtered all five women.

They haven't trusted him much to do what was necessary ever since, but today he proved them wrong. He did what was necessary. He killed the rat who posed a threat to his boss and everyone else. The rat worked for James' boss. On the night of the shooting at the Telford, the rat who was supposed to be taking out Telford ass-holes along with the rest of them, hid in a room throughout the shooting after seeing men being brutally killed. The rat was new and had never had much experience in shoot-outs or gun related tasks but muscle was needed after losing some men prior to the shoot-out so he was assigned.

Supposedly, he was so traumatised and in shock, he couldn't get himself to leave the room, and locked himself and stayed there long after the killing concluded. Everyone was so occupied with killing and not dying that no one had noticed him going to the room and no one remembered to check that room after the killing was done. If only they he and Rust would have found him. They would have put a bullet through his head then and there for being a coward, and that would have saved the lives of those cops and the girl.

The police then arrived after the shooting concluded, found him there and the poor bastard got taken into custody. Of course, a man who'd lock himself in a room leaving his brothers to take care of business couldn't be trusted not to rat, so obviously, the police threw  enough poison in his ear to get him to rat on the boss and everyone else involved in the shooting, in exchange to to be placed on a witness protection program before testifying against the crew.

Poor bastard. It's hard not to feel for the guy. Anyone would be compelled to rat in that situation, but when you're in this kind of world, it doesn't matter your reasons, the only thing anyone cares about is that you ratted, and compensation of blood would be required.

Basking at the refreshing, morning light at his bosses' compound, James gracefully sipped on his cup of coffee. If there was anything James loved more than cock and breaking noses, it was coffee. Rust, in his usual, energetic nature sat next to James, savagely munching on a piece of bread. Rust was a heavy man. He let himself go years ago, a lot of it due to his love for chicken, and some due to an unhappy marriage. Three more days and that would be a year sober. "I had an unfortunate run in with a hooker yesterday"

Having a good idea  where this was going, he wasn't even sure he even needed to ask. "Aw, shit Rust. Again? How many dead hookers is that this month?"

"I don't know. 10 maybe? I haven't counted" Rust grumbled, cracking a smirk, finding the humorous side to his story. No one had a more dark sense of humour than Rust.

" This one, she liked to get adventurous so she wanted me to fuck her while  having a gun in my hand. Of course, I got lost in the moment as I always do and I accidentally pulled the trigger. It was a fucking mess but you know, shit happens"

"I think they might need a restraining order against you man" James responded, playfully.

"I think you're right" Rust grumbled.

James chuckled. Rust was good company to have when feeling super shitty. He never failed to lighten the mood.

"How do you do it, Rust?" James asked sincerely. "How do you do the shit that we have to do and brush it off? The shit yesterday with killing the girl. I didn't pull the trigger but it feels like I did. Having to kill someone just for witnessing the shit we do. It tears me apart, Rust." James was not a man who cries easily but he was shedding a small tear."

"It comes with experience, son. When you've done enough of this kinda work, you learn to shut these feelings down. If you don't it'll eat you apart, piece by piece. I know I come across as a steel hearted son of a bitch, but that doesn't mean I don't think about the shit I've had to do. There isn't a day where I don't think about those girls at the Telford house, and other people I've hurt in the past. What I did to them was awful, truly awful. I don't know a single thing about them, that's the worst part. They might have been great people and I took their lives but when you sign up for this kinda work, you need to do what's gotta be done".

End of chapter 1.

Hello, This is Maddest Monkey for a review. I think your story was amazing because of the gang factor and how you didn't just say he shot the person but you went in depth I would say with the emotion of killing an unarmed person. I think you illustrated that perfectly and so for the first section you did very very good. Then we get to the scene with the girl and everyone knows what the guy has to do I mean she just flipping witnessed a crime so of course they kill her. Now as I say in ALL of my reviews when I review I review on how good the story was put together instead of the grammar and spelling. I believe that as long as it is a readable piece of work than that is all that matters with that. I believe the story should be well put together as well. You passed both of my expectations with flying colors and I am happy that you did because as soon as I saw that title I was hoping this would be a good story. It was. Now it was dark... and I like dark so you did good for a dark emotion wise book. As said in another review the title matches with the story. IT DOES. Oh my gosh I see so many stories that have amazing titles and the story has nothing to do with the stinking title. I am so soooooooo glad your story was NOT one of those horrible stories. I do have to say I set very high expectations in fact higher than I usually do and you passed and I am so glad you did. Anyways keep writing because you and most other authors have so much potential and if your like most authors the only way to get all that emotion and potential out is on a keyboard or pen and paper.

Keep Writing,

Hey greatman, like the other reviewers I was drawn in by the title. To be honest I was expecting a fantasy story, not a seedy shoot up but I enjoyed it. The only problem I noticed was you being to descriptive of the characters. This is probably a personal thing but I find that strong characters will describe themselves. You tell us that Chester has a soothing voice just before he calms down a girl who just witnessed a murder. it's a bit redundant. Show don't tell as they say.
Other than that I thought it was great, you seemed to get into your stride after that and the dialogue brought the characters alive. I love the moral ambiguity and depth in the characters. Rust is and old gangster and obviously a nasty son of a bitch but can still be funny or fatherly towards his crew. You've got the start of something cool.

First of all, I must say I too was really intrigued by the title so naturally clicked on your story as soon as I saw it. :) You did a really great work of building up the characters up front and letting the readers inside their inner thoughts and tussles so that we could connect better with them and subsequently learn to care for them even though they are on the bad side, killing the innocent. The scene is built as an intense one with bang on action and I'm sure that were it longer, I still wouldn't have stopped reading - a total page-turner it is :-D I will definitely like to read what is next and know who the 'rat' is, what does James really have to prove and what's the background story of this sudden action. Keep it up!

Thanks a lot Warrior it means a lot to hear such positive feedback! I'll definitely try to finish it soon for you to read, I posted a little more but not enough. Thanks again for the positivity! (:

Hey, @greatman! I was actually intrigued by this piece by the title! And that's a great thing! As I'm sure you're aware, the title is a very important part of any piece of work. That aside, I was hooked on this from the first few sentences. I'm very interested to find out who "the rat" is, what he told, what he saw, what team HE is on, just what relevance he has to this story in general. Obviously his side of the story won't be told, as we've found out, but we, the readers, can still find out all of this information through your MC and other characters. I look forward to reading more of this and hope you are going to continue! I saw minor grammatical errors, but nothing I'm going to nitpick at, as editing is supposed to be saved for last anyway, and this piece is not complete. Let me know if you post more in regard to this story!

Thanks a lot MLanders. Means a lot that you like it and that you'll like to read on. I'll definitely post the next part again soon and I'll let you know. Thanks a lot again for the positive feedback! (:
