By thousands I count
All of the things we share
All of the ways we are connected
Sown together by graceful hands like the patches on the comforter we used to sleep under
Remember?
By millions I count, all of the things we are going to do
The drawers in my bedroom are overflowing with lists of places we will see
None of them are finished, because we both ran out of synonyms for "everywhere"
You are an accumulation of the Earth at her finest
There are diamonds in your hair,
Capability in your hands
Your palms are endlessly powerful and your mind is a masterpiece, painted in a hundred shades of emerald
And should the most vibrant part of the painting fade with your security,
Just remember
That there are days when I cannot take care of myself
But I will always take care of you
I will stitch the lacerations of your heart while mine are left garishly open
I will gift wrap my last gram of confidence, and lay it in your hands, so that you can be strong
The spaces between my fingers will always be the right size for yours
And I remember when we were both gently scolded after I followed your lead
"Well if Lilly jumped off a bridge would you?"
And our mothers hands shook when I answered without missing a beat
"Yes"
I pray that there will never be a floor of eggshells between us,
That when I reach for the roses that are your hands, I will not be met with thorns
I've spent the whole morning counting
The ways we go together
But I've decided it would be much faster
To count the ways we do not
Because there is nothing in this world
That I want to do without your shadow
On the ground next to mine
And there is no definition for me without you

Heya! This is one of my favourite poems I have read on this website, actually, ever. The thing that makes it so wonderful is the beautiful sense of love you have conveyed in some skilfully-written lines. The imagery to convey your love is just wonderful, and the metaphors work so well because they speak of so much but are not over the top. The last few lines are my favourite, there was so much meaning in them.
This line was the best (in my opinion):
"Because there is nothing in this world
That I want to do without your shadow
On the ground next to mine"
The one thing that I feel maybe wasn't quite right was the lack of punctuation. I don't know, maybe it would just work a little bit better. But, at the end of the day, this is a fabulous poem and the heart and soul is just amazing.
Well done!
Hey there, gracevan! Lilly is really lucky to have you as a sister; this is such a sweet, meaningful poem which really gets all your emotions to the surface. Your imagery and metaphors are absolutely beautiful, my favourites are probably Earth at her finest and lacerations of the heart. The poem is full of love, but there's also hints of darkness (such as your mother's hands shaking when you say you'd jump together) and the two elements are perfectly balanced to show the extent of your devotion. My favourite line, out of them all, is: The spaces between my fingers will always be the right size for yours. Pretty obvious why; it's just beautifully written. My least favourite would be the line which mentions emeralds. I'm left wondering just why her mind is the shade of emerald; does it have meaning to you two? To sum everything up, I love this! Well done.
