Chapter Five: Gay Alert

Mr. Barner’s classroom was almost all the way across campus so I had to hustle to get there on time but I got an idea of the layout, which was good. I got in the classroom just as the bell rang.

“Ah, hello there,” said the man I assumed was Mr. Barner. He looked as if he was in his late 30’s and he had a nerd look going on for he had large round glasses that almost completely covered his small face. The light blue sweater vest he wore was one only old people would be caught dead in. “Just in time. Take a seat,” he said sternly to me. He sure knew how to make a new student welcome because everyone was staring at me with hungry piranha like eyes.

There were two seats open. One seat behind a small girl who was making herself look even smaller and the other was behind a cute boy who was flexing and not noticing anything else around him. I decided to go with the one behind the cute boy. I was about to sit down when he looked up from his flexing and in a low manly voice said, “That’s my girlfriend’s seat.”

“Well she’s not here is she?” I responded sounding ticked off.

“She’ll be here. She’s just late.”

“Fine,” I spat. I was officially ticked off. This obviously wasn’t how I planned the day to go so far.

I was about to sit down behind the shriveled up girl when I was interrupted by a voice beside me. “Honey, cute Louie Baton handbag. Except it was so last season, but who cares right!” I looked beside me to find a cute Latino boy with short black, gelled hair. I looked him over quickly and I was surprised to see I recognized everything he wore was brand name, from AE to Abercrombie. But I still wasn’t sure who talked to me. I looked around to see no one else noticing me. I looked at him again.

“Hello, girlfriend are you def or something cause I’m talking to you,” he continued, obviously not noticing my confusion. Na uh! The words came out of his mouth but, but… “Deer in the headlights much girlie.”

“I… I’m sorry. I was just confused for a second.”

“No worries sista’ happens all the time.” He said, unaware of how confused I was. Of course I had seen a gay guy before but I never expected one in Oklahoma. I thought they were an endangered species outside of California and New York. Places like Oklahoma and Montana just didn’t scream gay to me so why shouldn’t I be surprised?

“I’m assuming your Hailey Rose. Am I right?” Mr. Barner interrupted. I then noticed I was still standing up and everyone was looking at me again. “Something you would like to share before I do roll call Ms. Rose?”

“Actually yes,” I said, trying to recover from my latest embarrassment. I walked up to the front of the classroom. I scanned the room for anyone in the clique for if one of them was already watching me then I was doomed. I couldn’t recognize anyone, which was a good sign so I started, “Hi I’m Hailey Rose. I came from Monterey California and I’m 18 years old. I’m glad I’m here and I hope to make some good friends. So thank you.” It was silent for a second until the gay guy started clapping and screaming encore. I was hoping that would take the attention off me so I could make my escape back to my seat, but it didn’t. Obviously the guy did gay stuff a lot, for example: clapping hysterically, so no one seemed to care.

Just then the door then opened to reveal a real beauty. She was a bit taller then me, had blonde hair, and scorching sharp brown eyes. She wore a skimpy skirt with a tight shirt that read ‘Blonde and Beautiful, Deal With It Bitch’. Now everyone stared at her instead of me. A relief.

As soon as she entered her eyes targeted the gay guy, who in fact was still clapping (but thankfully stopped the cheering). “Stop clapping homo,” she scolded, her words ice cold. He stopped clapping, giving her a dirty look. She walked to her seat with such ease and poise it made me shiver where I stood. “And BTW,” she continued, “that Louie Baton Handbag that you have there,” she was referring to my handbag that was laying next to the gay guy, “Was so last season so if I were you, which I thank god I’m not, I would stop playing dress up with out of date handbags and go die somewhere.” Before she sat down she muttered under her breath, “fag.”

Immediately he counterattacked by muttering, “bitch.” I smiled at him. I felt bad about what she said but obviously no one else did. The people at this school sucked.

“Did I miss anything Mr. Barner?” the girl asked.

“No, you just missed Hailey Rose’s welcome speech,” he answered.

“Oh good. Then I’m glad I was late.” Then everyone in the class laughed except the guy I talked to. I slowly walked back to my seat. Mr. Barner started doing role call while I turned to the guy.

“I’m so sorry for what she said to you. Why didn’t you say the bag was mine?” I asked.

“It’s no big deal. You’re the new girl. You still have a chance to fit into a respectable group while I already have a group and nothing I do can change their opinion of me.”

“You saved me. Thank you. Is it true what she said about you? Are you…” I asked awkwardly.

“No I’m not gay. I want to smack that girl’s ass and be a football player just like every other stupid guy pig here,” he stopped and smiled at me with his perfectly straight teeth, “of coarse silly. Jeez I thought people from California would be a little more observant then this. And BTW I’m Erik.”

“Hi, I’m obviously Hailey and sorry I didn’t recognize that about you sooner, sorry.”

“NBD girl. So I’m guessing your new here right?”

“Yeah I am.”

“How you liking it?”

“It’s different then what I’m used to that’s for sure.”

“Yeah I guess so. Hey! What’s your next class?” I showed him my paper of classes. “OMG I have every class with you except two! OMFG, you took acting class! Me too. I can just tell that we’re going to be the bestest of friends.”

Okay, so I didn’t get the greatest start to the day like I’d hoped but it turned out okay. Nothing too bad happened to me, yet. I still had a chance to fit in with the clique if I could find all of them and restore my status as queen bee but of coarse that means I would have to dethrone their current queen bee. I was willing to do that. Right?

(hard to understand. kinda like a "this is this, yet at the same time not this" when "this" is the same thing. like i said, hard to understand =D)

(is this supposed to be on the next line?)“Did I miss anything Mr. Barner?” the girl asked.

“Hi, I’m obviously Hailey and sorry I didn’t recognize that about you sooner, sorry.”
