I Wish They Forgot About Me

I Wish They Forgot About Me

My mother says I’m normal.

I’m just like the others

It’s funny, she always made me feel accepted

My father says I’m a freak,

A fag, not worth caring about.

And sometimes I believe him.

The ringing of the alarm echoes round my empty room,

My life built around this singular space.

Ringing, school, bullying, sleeping.

A routine set in stone,

Like societies sense of normality.

I’m not normal, I’m not like the others.

I don’t chase girls

I don’t wear skinny jeans,

I don’t like the same music as them,

I don’t like sports,

I am not the same as them, I’m not…

And they know that…

They know.

Jokes turn into weapons,

Insecurities as ammunition,

Why won’t they just leave me alone?

I hear them when I’m at home,

Their hollow screams filling my head with self-hate.

Faggot, Gay boy, Chav, Tink.

Hitting me like shards of broken glass.

Please just leave me alone…

My eyes are dry,

But I am crying…

Please just forget about me…

Footnote: Inspired by bullying I have suffered at school. I did not suffer abuse from my parents, verbally or otherwise for issues addressed here. That section is a work of fiction added for dramatic effect.

Greetings! Being a former anti-bully myself (In short, I'd bully the bully. Not getting into the whole "two-wrongs-don't-make-a-right" viewpoint that many others hold true), I understand where you were at the time. Bullies are like poisonous plants; they're only dangerous if you don't cut there heads off with hedge-trimmers before they can grow out. Speaking in terms of similes, of course ;)

Acknowledging "societies sense of normality" hit home with me. Realizing that you don't fit into it is just the cocoon-process, homie. It's awkward, trivializing and seemingly endless, but these negative experiences serve purpose in building character. Eventually, you'll reemerge as a butterfly, while the weaponized jocks will evolve into moths. Happens almost every time.

In conclusion, don't let them get to you. Stand up for yourself, defend your sphere of space as well as you can, stop pleading for them to "forget about you," and start "remembering yourself."

The future is better for worse reasons.

Thanks for the nostalgic read, and I hope that my insights can be of some practical value.

Right I only just checked this piece again and I realized I did not reply to this. Thank you so much for your insight and your comments and I'm glad I gave you such a nostalgic read.

Hi! I liked this!
some lines that particularly stood out to me were: 'Jokes turn into weapons, Insecurities as ammunition'
I feel this part really expressed the whole theme of the poem which is bullying and what a war zone it really is for the victim.

I also liked 'hollow screams filling my head with self-hate' I feel this told me that the bullies do not think about the pain they're inflicting on their victim and that the abuse they dish out means nothing to them but even so the pain and meaning is so real for you.

I feel a little improvement could be made in the flow of the poem. I felt it didn't all roll off the tongue when I read it, however that is just my opinion.

Keep writing!!!

Thank you so much for your review. I am really happy that you captured the meaning behind the line beginning "Hollow screams..." as that is my personal favorite line. I'm glad you liked it! :)

Here to review your poem, elitemaster!
I loved the concept of this poem. That is very important to write about, and I'm proud to review this work. *claps hands* :D
The one thing that I didn't like as much though, was near the ending.

Their hollow screams fill me with self-hate.
Faggot, Gay boy, Chav, Tink.
Hitting me like shards of broken glass.
Please just leave me alone...
My eyes are dry,
But I am crying...
Please just forget about me...

It seems to me like there's a lot going on, which kind of bothers me. That's probably an opional thing, but I hope you see what I'm talking about. The one part I do like in this section of the poem is
Hitting me like shards of broken glass.

I'm a fan of metaphors and similes. So thank you very much for adding one in there. :)

I enjoyed the length and the layout of this piece. Even though I normally like splitting the lines up into stanzas, I don't think that would've worked for this poem.
I liked the title, too, because it brought me here to want to read this. I might've said this before, but the idea is really great, partly cause it's based on real life experiences. I think that is a great idea to write about and share with YWSers. :D Wonderful piece, and good job.

Thank you so much for your review, it means a lot to me to have people look at my writing and review it so positively. This poem was originally split up into stanzas but for some reason when I uploaded it, they were gone. But to be honest, I really like it without stanzas.

Me too. But to fix that problem, you have to put in a . , - or ~ in the space that separates the stanzas. :D
