Chatper 1: Junior Year

Isaiah was an annoyance to me. For some reason he'd been in my English class Sophomore year and now, my Junior year, I imagined him stalking me. He was not only in my English class, but he sat behind me. Great. For some reason, I felt Isaiah was always looking at me, even when he wasn't. But when I did feel he was examining me sometimes, I caught him. I couldn't exactly catch him in class because he was behind me, but outside of class I did. I'm nearly positive he was always looking at me, but sometimes I doubt if I just was mistaken. Isaiah, I swear, for all of junior high and high school had been trying to talk to me or be around me.

I wouldn't exactly describe myself as a beauty or a beast, I'm just me. I believe beauty is what you want it to be. My hair is naturally jet black and I'm a mixed race. The darkness that is my hair is relaxed, somewhat tight, curls that reach past my shoulders. I have dark eyes and lengthy eyelashes. Thanks to my mom I was bestowed with shortness, five two and a half to be exact. I haven't deciphered if it's a curse or a blessing yet. Also, I'm not sure who to thank, but I'm cursed with a full bust. I've rated having a full bust and unnecessary attention as a kinky curse. I'm average for my size and I know how to dress. I'd always been a fashion savvy person, matching accessories and colors ceaselessly. My friends, associates and anyone who'd seen or known me, knew that I was "outfit aware."

I had a crush on Isaiah's friend, Martin. Martin and I had a more or less romantic history. Sophomore year, I allowed myself to stray from the good Christian girl I was and met Martin. He was a typical good-looking guy that masses of girls longed for, and because of that fact, I was drawn away too. At first, we had just started talking innocently and would hang out at lunch in the gym. He was so fascinating to me and I was lost in a fantasy of how dreamy I thought he was. Over the course of only a week, we had already kissed. The kiss, was not what I envisioned it to be. I guess that ruined it and I just lost the lust I had for him. It was just lust. In English that year, I was discussing with my friend Velvet about Martin and how I'd lost interest, "How should I break up with him?" I looked to Velvet for the answers, "You guys aren't even going out," a voice impeded the conversation. I pivoted and found the origin of the response, Isaiah. "So, that's not what I mean," I declared embarrassed. Then, Velvet and I continued our conversation more secretively.

After that class, I remember how much I dreaded having to see Martin. My palms were moistened and my heart beat was elevated for the bulk of the school day. I couldn't eliminated the expanding anxiety and I couldn't focus on any of my school work. How would Martin, who I believed to be "too good" for me, react?

While on my passing to fifth period, I received a vibration of dismay. At random, it was Martin that texted me. "So whats up," it read. I at once, panicked. I could discern that Martin knew what I was going to say. My stomach felt knotted as I struggled to find the proper words, I felt the moment was premature. I proceeded to inform him as amiable as possible, carefully wording my waning feelings. "I know, Isaiah told me," he presumed.

At that juncture, I was poisoned with aggravation towards Isaiah. He ruined my somewhat insignificant relationship with Martin. I still desired more time to review the circumstances before facing Martin, in case I changed my mind. But now, due to Isaiah, it was ruined. Out of my own courtesy, I hoped to tell him in person. I wanted to perhaps stay friends, but in behalf of Isaiah, I couldn't. From then on, I had stopped associating with Martin basically and I accumulated a constant agitation for Isaiah and his presence.

The next day in English class, I was beat. It seemed so surreal that I didn't crave Martin anymore, but I accepted it. However, I did not accept Isaiah. Just listening to him interact with the other students in the class was en-angering me. When he came into a conversation I was included in, I was peaked with disgust. I justified with my mind that avenging myself was the appropriate thing to do. "Ms. Bont!" I hollered through the restlessness of the class. I caught the teacher's attention, "can you please move Isaiah? He's bothering me." I must have sounded sincere because Ms. Bont believed me. Isaiah was relocated to the opposite side of the room. I could tell he knew it was absurd that I did that, but I was safe from him. I felt amused and catty, but satisfied.

Well, one year later, I recovered from my spite with Isaiah. Now, he only irritates me about fifty percent of the time, but I matured out of getting him in trouble. Nonetheless, he was always fidgeting with my waist belts and touching my back in class. For the most part, I tried to ignore him. But sometimes, in weird, uncommon ways, he was cute. He was also always flirting with me, I acknowledged. On those sometimes days, I was folding papers with my scribblings to him inside and passing them to Isaiah, we passed notes on occasion. We'd talk sometimes, but not too often. That year, Junior year, he had a girlfriend. He liked little girls, I'd say. She was a fourteen year-old freshman, cheerleader. They often enjoyed the flavor of each other's mouths for the entire period of break. Gross.

I was never permitted to associate with guys outside of school. The only guys I was authorized to talk to were from church, and even then I only had one close guy friend. I remember the transformation from God-fearing innocence to a crude teenager. For most of my high school career so far, I abstained from guys completely. Well, once I came to the realization that the a percentage of the male species found me attractive, I broke. I'd never kissed a guy besides Martin, I'd never had a boyfriend and I'd never done more than kiss. With the standards of my school, I was behind, I should have at least been in a couple of relationships. However, I never felt inexperienced or like I was missing out. When I would be asked out, I would kindly decline and use my religion as an explination. It saved me sometimes, but sometimes I did so begrudgingly. Even so, I was always firm with my religious beliefs and never found the dating rules burdensome. The rules were, "you can't date until you're ready to be married." It sounds harsh, but I was used to the decorum.

Through elementary and junior high, I was never the pretty girl or the first kid picked during nationball. I was an adventurous partial tomboy. When I reached high school though, I evolved into a girl and "developed." I experimented with accesories and explored outfits. Due to this revelation, it generated a response from the guys around me. I was not accustomed to the attention, but I learned to use it to my advantage.

Hi! Pink here, for a review!

So I found the opening to be quite interesting. I mean she thinks he a stalker so it's pretty eye brow lifting. Now, I'm still wondering why she doesn't just switch her seat if she's that paranoid with him. I mean, she's watching him too, right? She's watching him because she thinks he's watching her so it's like, a circle! :D Cool. Anyways, nice opener, it's definitely a hook.
I wouldn't exactly describe myself as a beauty or a beast, I'm just me. I believe beauty is what you want it to be. My hair is naturally jet black and I'm a mixed race. This clump of description you have right now is too much for the beginning. I suggest saving that for later. The means of a first chapter to grasp the reader's attention and make sure you have them around your little finger, right? haha.
But, I still like the very first sentence here, I like the way you described her as neither a beauty or a beast, it was different, I haven't seen it be used like that before.

Plot
So this bit seem a bit cliche to me right. I mean, I can see where this is headed but I don't really mind. Most romances are cliche because it's so hard to do something new. It's always a spin off of some sort of cliche, right? Anyway, you did a lot of info dumping in there, it isn't so bad, you were still able to keep my interest nonetheless :) But I do advise you to cut back on some information and all, save it for later. There is no need to explain everything in the beginning anyway.

Characters

Your main charter is still a bit 2D. I think you should have given us more of her personality instead of her background life and her parents. What is she like? What kind of person does she want to be? Also, in the beginning she talks about Issiah and then goes on about Martin and the whole stalker-ish aspect disappears and I'm left slightly confused. I wished you put some more of her problem with Issiah in there because I'm very intrigued with his character. :)

Grammar/punctuation
I noticed some slight errors here and there but nothing too big. Plus, Yuri and everyone already pointed most of them out so you're good. I do suggest you brush up on some comma rules though. Also, most of your writing has a lot "I's" in there. Which can be a problem. I did this and I did that. I know writing in first person is difficult because you're limited to that one dumb "I". So, I suggest you vary your sentences. For example:
Instead of...
I jumped up and looked her up and down.
Do...
Jumping up, I looked her up and down.
That way your sentence doesn't start with "I" and it's a bit different. I know it's not much but be amazed as it helps quite a bit. :)

Overall
You still have interesting characters and all and I like Issiah, he's weird :D
Anyway, you did well for the first chapter. I would try to spice up the writing however, some of the flow here was a bit choppy and I don't know if it was just me but your writing seemed slight more formal than other works. It's no problem, but it's just something I noticed. *sigh* I still enjoyed reading this, nonetheless! Hope this review helped somewhat :D
I'll see you around,

Thank you so much Shear :)

That was very descriptive.
I had to feeling toward your MC, because there was no emotion to make that tie.
YOu could use emotion in here

Openings are very important, you want something that will draw in the reader. An annoying character isn't that interesting unless you make him so.
What about the way he looks? If he's unattractive does he have a funny quirk like a mole or something that is so horrid your MC finds herself mesmerized by it in disgust? That would make an interesting opening line.
Or maybe just the scene to draw the reader in.
Add your MC's emotions, too. "Ugg, I can't believe Isaiah is sitting behind me again" You know, sort of thing.

I'm a mixed race

What kind of mixed race? What does this mean for her looks? Whats her dad, whats her mom? What does this mean for home culture?

You say curse three times in three sentences, try using other words.

I had a crush on Isaiah's friend, Martin. Martin and I had a more or less romantic history.

Specify what you mean by had. Is this before or after you're romantic history. Specify. Introduce Martin more.

Suddenly you go from a telling of the basic past to a full blown story. Try having a better transition and less of just telling what happened before.

Also, you have a mix of very sophisticated vocabulary and normal teenage babble, personally I think you should lean more towards the latter because of your character.
t that juncture, I was poisoned with aggravation towards Isaiah. He ruined my somewhat insignificant relationship with Martin. I still desired more time to review the circumstances before facing Martin, in case I changed my mind.
is what I mean by too sophisticated, it's almost as if you are writing an essay rather than a teenager telling a story.

PM me any questions

I appreciate your help!

Thank you for the advice, I appreciate it..
there's an intro to the story too, I'm not sure of the layout of this chapter yet.
The intro is somewhat confusing, but I'm trying to work out the kinks.
..it's "cliche" but the reason it's less cliche is that it's based off of a true story, that
I'm searching for the best way to state.

Thanks!

I know exactly what you are saying. Thank you for your help.

Hello there, Delilah!

Here to review. :3

RED in nitpicks.

Isaiah was an annoyance to me. #FF0000 ">For some reason he'd been in my English class Sophomore year and now, my Junior year, I imagined him stalking me. Honestly speaking, I didn't quite like this as your introductory part. It's because you've kept on saying that Isaiah has been much of a stalker towards your main character. It's too repetitive and personally, that annoyed me than what your main character felt towards Isaiah. You didn't have to immediately jump into conclusion that Isaiah likes your MC, develop or stretch it out more and let that revealing part show later.

A bit info-dump. Do not tell us about your MC's physical features, show it. Perhaps, let her stand in front of a big mirror and let her examine her face, body and etcetera. It's because describing about how your MC looks would probably threw off your reader or you have probably bored them(to death).

Martin and I #FF0000 ">had a more or less romantic history.

Maybe shared would have come in handy here?

Sophomore year, I allowed myself to stray from the good Christian girl#FF0000 "> I was and met Martin.

"I had been" instead of "I was" would probably sound good and right.

"So, that's not what I #FF0000 ">mean,"

"Meant" ?

I couldn't #FF0000 ">eliminated the expanding anxiety

"Eliminate", my dear. :3

and my #FF0000 ">heart beat was elevated for the bulk of the school day.

I think "heart beat" there is one word.

I could tell he knew it was absurd that I did that, #FF0000 ">but I was safe from him. I felt amused and catty, but satisfied.

Perhaps, you meant to say "safe away from him"?

we passed notes on #FF0000 ">occasion.

"Occasionally" sound better.

I'd never done more than kiss

How about add "a" before "than"?

~

I don't want to sound rude or anything, but maybe if you could just try re-wording some of the phrases here which you might find it's awkward to read, please do. Talking about the first paragraph, they were really in confusion and repetition. Plus, you have jumped a lot of certain events which loses your reader's track. And I feel like the romanticism here is not obvious, so clarify and clear that out properly. Make us feel what your main character is feeling, don't just tell that she's annoyed with Isaiah, make us feel annoyed too. So that's the time when you need to show rather than do the telling part. With that, this piece would look realistic and less in confusion. It's because my overall impression wast that this was just a more of a reminiscing (more like reporting actually) of what had happened in her life in the past. And I feel this is a bit cliche story you know, a common thing about a girl who dislike a guy but she like that guy's friend. Give this a bit of a twist.

So, we all know that we are not perfect when it comes to grammar and punctuations, hence we commit huge or minor mistakes, but it doesn't also say that it's a reason for us to not write with grammar correctly. So, I just wanted to say is that, I know you are struggling well when it comes to that particular matter, but you could actually improve more by enhancing more of your writing skills through reading books and increasing your vocabulary skills.

So, that's the only thing I'm going to say. All in all, this personally was not entertaining to read but hey, I think this has potential to get better. Hope I helped and PM me for questions. :D

Keep writing!

Peace out!

~yuri
