Dreams

I wrote this as an English GCSE creative writing story. What do you think of it?

The bank was being robbed. Thousands of pounds were being thrown into bags and loaded onto a big white truck that glowed in the moonlight. It had no number plates and tinted windows, which hid the driver from view completely. Four men, dressed in black with black balaclavas on were loading the money into the back of the van. They were obviously villains and gave off an aura of wickedness. Eleven people were huddled together inside the bank. They were being held at gunpoint, hostages, and were terrified of what might happen to them. They needed help.

That was when I came in. My name is Bill White and I am a superhero. I flew in from the sky and landed on the truck. The four thugs looked up star struck and leaped for cover but I was too fast. I struck out from the van and landed a full powered kick right into one of their heads. Next I leaped onto the next thug and knocked him clean out with a single punch. My super-strength quickly overpowered the rest of the bad guys and soon the whole situation was under control. They lay strewn about on the ground, unconscious. I took off again to find someone else who needed help. As I flew into the air the crowds around me started chanting my name.

“Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! BILL!” screamed my wife. “Will you wake up?”

I was standing in line at the bank. Everyone around me was staring at me.

“You were jumping around like an idiot! Have some self control!” screamed my wife. I turned back to the queue, wishing I could be back in my dreams. Bill White was no superhero. Bill White was Bill White and Bill White was nobody. I sighed and continued to queue.

As I stood in the queue, I noticed something outside the window. A large group of German tourists were standing opposite the building. They were heading straight for the bank. I grabbed my Enfield rifle and dived for cover behind an abandoned artillery post. The sandbags surrounded me and covered me from the barrage of bullets that were being fired. The German soldiers continued to advance. They were closing in. I could here their voices. “What the hell is he doing now!” they cried out. They were obviously worried. I was going to take them all down.

I waited until even their breath was audible from my hiding place and then I attacked. I raised myself onto one knee and rested the barrel of my rifle on the top of the sandbags and fired. The bullets hit their targets and the five German troops fell lifelessly to the floor. I was about to celebrate when I saw the silhouettes that were forming on the horizon. They were coming in mass this time.

I turned and ran to my troops who were positioned about 100 yards back. “The Germans are coming! The Germans are coming! The Germans are coming!” I yelled. But they just stood there. They didn’t move. They just gave me odd looks.

“What is he going on about?” said one of the troops.

“Germans? Is he psycho or something?” enquired another.

“My Grandmother’s German! What the hell is his problem!” yelled another.

It was hopeless. I would have to go it alone. My troops were obviously losing it and must have severe mental trauma. War can be cruel.

I set off again and ran at the enemy. With my rifle locked into my shoulder, I aimed and fired. Bullet after bullet flew from my rifle and struck its target. The Germans were in trouble. They were losing too many men. They began to retreat over the hill. I had won.

“The Germans are dead! The Germans are dead! The Germans are dead!” I cried in victory.

My troops applauded. They were stunned and started chanting my name and cheering.

“Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! BILL!” screamed my wife. “For the love of God stop it!”

I was in the bank queue again. Everyone was staring at me in disgust. He was the enemy, the German hating racist who had shouted at a group of tourists and pretended to kill them all with a rifle. God!

I turned back to the queue, wishing I could be back in my dreams. Bill White was no super Nazi killing WWII officer. Bill White was Bill White and Bill White was nobody. I sighed and continued to queue once more.

Five more minutes past before I heard it. Something was flying overhead. I looked up through the glass roof of the bank. It was an aircraft but I didn’t recognise it. I couldn’t identify it. It was unidentified. Aliens were coming for us…

The craft landed in the field outside my village. I along with many others hurried out to see what was here. It was huge with strange weaponry and lighting covering it. It had strange shapes carved into every edge that gave off a menacing aura. It was terrifying and yet effective and breathtaking. It was not from this world.

And then they stepped from the craft. They were stranger than in the movies, stranger than in your wildest imagination. They were blue people and they certainly weren’t little. They had the physique of a man but every other characteristic was… alien. They were terrifying.

“What are you staring at!” yelled the lead alien. We stood there. We didn’t know what to do.

“Stop staring at me!” yelled the alien. “What are you doing?”

I stepped towards the craft and walked up to the alien. I reached out and touched his face. He felt human.

“Get off me!” it yelled but I couldn’t. I was amazed by the strange new creature.

It was at that point that the creature and all creatures around it pulled out their weapons. I was in trouble now. I jumped back and dived across the floor just in time to avoid the lasers that shot at me from the bizarre ray guns that they held. I was in danger. I had no cover and needed a weapon fast. I did the only thing I could do. I ran at the aliens.

They were surprised by my outburst and this gave me enough time to dive on the nearest alien, disarm him and return to my feet. I stood over one of the alien creatures holding the gun to its head. It was then that the aliens started chanting my name.

“Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! BILL!” screamed my wife. “Step away from that poor woman!”

I was standing looking down on a woman. She was older than me, probably in her fifties and was lying on the floor in a defensive manner. I had her handbag in my hand and was holding it at arms length. Security guards were running into the building to stop me. What had I done?

I should have known it was a dream. For I am Bill White. Bill White is no alien hunter. Bill White is Bill White and Bill White is in trouble.

I was taken by one of the guards on the charge of assault…

*

As Bill White was carted out of the bank, across the world three men were going about their lives. They were walking about doing the normal everyday kind of things. However, they were special. Jack Jones was a superhero who fought crime and stared danger right in the eyes. George Thompson was a soldier who had seen many wars and fought bravely to the end. Harry Smith had a terrible secret. An alien ship had landed in his garden and abducted him, experimented on him and then returned him to earth.

All three had seen horrific things. All three had had enough of their lives. All three dreamed of one day becoming another ordinary person…

Okay, I've got to say I loved it! It reminded me of "The Twilight Zone" and I love that show! Very good!

First off, welcome to YWS.

It had no number plates and tinted windows, [s]which hid the driver from view completely.[/s]

Well, obviously. That's what tinted windows do.

Four men, dressed in black with [s]black[/s] balaclavas on

They're dressed in black. We get it; it follows that the balaclavas they're wearing are black too. The repetition is unnecessary.

[s]Then[/s] I leaped onto the next thug and knocked him clean out

Never use 'then' in an action scene. Try and avoid its use altogether actually.

A large group of German tourists were stood opposite the building.

were standing. Or, delete 'were' and leave 'stood'. Your choice.

Okay, so prior to the ending, I thought this was hilarious and very well executed. At first, I was bored and thought this would be rubbish, until it turned out to be a dream, in the bank. Quite comedic, really. Even though we were given no reason for Bill's absurd actions, I still liked it.

At first it came off as a parody.

That changed into a random - somewhat autistic seeming - guy who can't stop daydreaming thing. The ending sorta implies that Bill White, is in fact, not ordinary at all. As though he were channeling the three extraordinary people approaching the bank. If that was unintentional, I suggest you delete that last paragraph and leave it with him getting arrested.

It's funny.

Did you intend for it to be simply comical? Or did you mean for it to be satirical?

Either way, I enjoyed it.

Cheers

Okay. I like it! It gave me a good laugh because it reminds me of a friend of mine. She acts that way sometimes. I really like it and you should right more like it. I'll be posting a short story here soon so I would really enjoy it if you would read it and review it for me. Thanks. And happy writing!
