This is a fanfic of Volume Two of Season Five of the Netflix show “Stranger Things”. This is also a ship between two characters in the show, Mike x Will. The ship is called “Byler” for those who don’t know. I saw this scene in the show and…the dialogue was just odd. It doesn’t even work in a platonic sense. Basically, Will says that at least they can stay friends (He has been crushing on Mike the whole show but does not think Mike feels anything for him) and then Mike says “Friends? No thanks.” And then he does a REALLY long pause only to say “Best friends!”. Idk, it’s just bad. So here is this ship fanfic. Enjoy and Happy Valoween!*

“What matters is that you’re here and we can still be friends.” Will said, his eyes holding a little bit of the fear he had back at the station.

Fear that was partially caused by Mike, because he was not there when Will needed him the most, because he hurt Will with his words, because…no. That would all get fixed, right before they traversed to the Upside Down.

“No, not friends. I think we’ve gone past that now.” Mike said, pushing down the terror that was bubbling up inside him before he could change his mind.

Will’s eyes went wide with shock and disbelief, but Mike didn’t want to go back. He had to say it and he wasn’t sure if he would ever have a chance to again.

“The way I’ve treated you these years was wrong. I hurt you with words that I should have never said and words that I didn’t say. You said I was a leader, that I had heart and courage, but the truth is…”

Mike sighed, his heart beating rapidly in his chest as he could not believe that he was finally saying the words that were lodged in him for as long as he could remember, that he was saying it in the Upside Down.

“You’re the heart. You’ve always been the heart. You are the foundation that has kept all together. I kept us apart because you mean so much more to me than a friend ever could. God, when you went missing, I…I didn’t know how I’d be able to go through life again. I missed you just like I missed you last summer, but I didn’t have the heart to say it. I didn’t want to say it. I didn’t want it to be true, but it is.”

“What…what are you saying?”

“I’m saying that…that El is great, but she’s my friend. I love her, but not in the way I thought I did. Not when you’re here, not when you got taken. Me and El, we tried to make it work, but it’s just…it’s just different between us. We broke up a few months ago and I was trying to think of how to deal with all of this, but now, I think I know what to do.”

There wasn’t much else he had to say but:

“I love you, Will. Not as a friend, not as a best friend, but more. I’m so, so sorry for everything and if you don’t feel the same way about me, then that’s fine. I understand. You don’t have to ever talk to me again if you don’t want to. You-“

“Do you mean it?” Will asked, his eyes shining with tears, but the tears didn’t seem sad.

Mike nodded, no words significant enough to say. He noticed that somehow, the distance between them had lessened just a bit, just enough for their hands to brush, for their eyes to meet. If only it could be more.

“I…all this time, I thought that…that you didn’t…that you wouldn’t…but I…Mike, I…I do feel the same way. And nothing can change that.”

They were both crying, Will resting his head on Mike’s shoulder, Mike feeling a weight lifting off his chest. Was that how Will felt when he came out to them all back at the station? That freedom he got to finally be himself? To let it out.

That was a wonderful feeling, but it would be better if-

Mike placed a kiss on Will’s head, doing it so quick that he couldn’t stop himself, so quick that he wondered if it was wrong, but Will smiled and then, the both of them left to join the others.

Whatever happened, at least they had each other.
