The Job of the Writer

I'd like to know what you think about this poem. I'm not sure it flows too well, but it's hard to judge my own work. Criticism is appreciated. :D

When you write it’s hard to realize;
The reader’s not inside your head.
They don’t know what you know.
All they have is what they’ve read.

Their life and their experience,
Shape the world they know.
It’s hard to make them see your world
Without breaking the flow.

The things you write and you create,
They see so differently.
A writer’s job is to bridge that gap,
And to do it perfectly
.
This is another attempt

Spoiler! :
When I write it’s hard to realize;
The reader’s not inside my head.
They don’t know all that I know.
All they have is what they’ve read.

Their life and their experience,
Both Shape the world they know and see.
I bring them into my world
How they see’s not up to me

The things I write and I create,
They perceive all so differently.
A writer bridges that gap,
And he does so perfectly.

Hmm...I was told by some poet great that good poems will always paint an image. No matter the topic, the words you share must detail some picture in the mind. Perhaps you could turn this idea into a metaphoric poem.

I'm not too fond of the use of "you" in a poem (or "I") or of the contractions.

And the lines seem too long...there are many unnecessary words in this piece. I think you should go through it again and choose the most important words (which you will keep)

I liked the last two lines of the poem. I, also, liked the idea. I'd just prefer it wasn't so direct/so obvious

whoooaaa awesome poem dude!! all of it is totally true, I'm right there with you. nice flow & rhythm & rhyme. I like both versions, they both speak the truth and completely capture what its like to be a writer and a reader and all that other stuff.. it really is great, my only concern is the word stealthily at the end there doesn't flow very well and I don't think it really fits with what you are trying to say. but overall, GREAT POEM!!

I enjoyed this poem because you touch on everything that it is to be a writer. I totally agree with you.

On the other side of things, I didn't quite get the flow but after my second reading I got on the poetry wave so to speak.

It was nice to read something that someone wrote about the expectation that we writers have to live up to.

Awesome!!

I'm not very good at critiquing poetry, so I won't try. You are amazing at writing though. I really enjoyed this poem. Keep up the good work!!

I love this! I like the second version (the spoiler one?). I think it flows more nicely. I think it portrays what goes (or should go) through a writers mind.
Awesome sauce!

I absolutely love this. Unfortunately, I'm no good at reviewing poetry, but your words spoke to me. I think they will speak to every writer here.

Nicely done :D

Awesome poem. I think it captures the mentality of a writer well. I particularly like
Their life and their experience,
Shape the world they know.

Im not so sure about what you mean on the last line. I feel it should end on something summing up your overall topic of the poem or watever.
Nice work neways!

When you write it’s hard to realize;
The reader’s not inside your head.
They don’t know what you know.
All they have is what they’ve read. Love this stanza

Their life and their experience,
Shape the world they know.
It’s hard to make them see your world
Without breaking the flow.

The things you write and you create,
They see so differently.
A writer’s job is to bridge that gap,
And to do it stealthily. Doesn't really flow here

Pretty Good poem well done althougth the ending could be polished a bit.

Poetry is my cheap means of transportation. By the end of the poem the reader should be in a different place from where he started. I would like him to be slightly disoriented at the end, like I drove him outside of town at night and dropped him off in a cornfield.
