Andrew - An Introduction

PreviousNext

His name was Andrew. He was 16 when we met and he had a habit of wearing white v-neck shirts that hugged his body and having his hair was always spiked up with too much gel.. He wore glasses and was skinnier then most people I knew.

We met during the summer when I was 11. He went to another school in a different state and he was visiting his family for the summer. We hit it off almost instantly. He didn't care what I looked like or the way I talked. He seemed more progressed then other people my age. He had a sense of maturity and didn't seem to worry about what I looked like. He seemed to like me for the contents of my heart.

He smiled at me from across the pool. I was waiting in line to get an ice cream cone when he walked in. He had his shirt draped over his shoulder and a towel around his waist. I felt my heart tighten and I couldn't help but stare. He shook his head slightly, laughing a little as he walked past me, setting up his towel by the basketball court.

Throughout the day, I switched between dipping my toes in the cool water and resting away from the sun while reading. Eventually, the water wrinkled my skin and switching back and forth was making me feel as though I was a fish out of water. While there was only a few hours left until the pool closed, I decided to spend them reading.

"Hey."

The voice made me jump. It was unfamiliar and I felt my heart skip a beat. When I looked up, he was standing over me blocking the sun with his shadow.

I was generally shy but something about this boy made me open up. "Hi."

Our conversation went on until the pool closed and until my mom came by to pick me up. He left just as my mom turned the corner and flashed me a smile before he drove away. On the way home, I played with the peice of paper he handed me before he left. The pencil marks etched into a small peice of paper with his name and his screen name. He made arrangements to meet me at the church a few minutes from my house.

Andrew wore a cross around his neck the first time we met. I had never been one to be religious and even at my age, I had strong opinions about the way I thought things happened. I went to church on occasions, when a neighbor lady took me and my best friend at the time, Felicia, and my best friend's mom. I always felt weird when they took communion and I followed closely behind them, swallowing the "wine" they gave us and the bread the pastor placed in our hands, face inches from ours, whispering an over used line. Andrew, however, didn't mind that I wasn't religious. He walked with poise to the pastor, shaking his hand and nodding as they spoke quietly. He took the wine, instead of the juice placed out for people our age, with confidence. No one mentioned it to him.

After service was over, we spent the brunch with each other and our friends from the youth church group. He made me feel as welcome as the church welcomed him. He held my hand and brought me a drink when my cup of punch was empty. When we left, we'd spend the day running around my neighborhood and swimming at the pool with his cousins and sitting cross-legged on the blacktop of the basketball court, sharing drinks and laughs.

I never mentioned him to my parents. I never was one to share much with my family for fear of being made fun of, yelled at, or told to do things differently. For the entire summer, and the rest of our journey, our relationship was kept a secret. The only people who knew were his cousins and a few of my internet friends.

We would spend hours in chat rooms with other friends, laughing and using asterisks to display affection towards each other when we couldn't be near each other. He would pull me close to him when we talked in chat rooms, in our own little world. Minutes turned to hours and our friends would cringe at the words we would exchange. Every time my chat window would open and his screen name would appear on my screen, my heart would twist up in knots. It was hard to believe that liking someone was this easy.

He had kissed me several times in person and as summer went on, despite our age, we began getting more and more serious. He would hold my hand as we walked through the mall and he told me I was beautiful every chance he got. We spoke about his family and his friends and the things he liked to do in his spare time. And when I went to camp for a week during the end of August, I did nothing but miss him more then I would have liked to.

When he picked me up from camp that summer, , we hugged closely and he listened intently on the way back about my experiences. In the back of our minds we knew that at the end of the summer neared, he'd have to leave.

The August heat hit us through the window of his cousins car as he had me pressed under him, kissing me. We never went any further then kissing, but I loved him and I wanted to but as summer dragged on, the thought of him leaving became even more and more pressing on my mind. I cried in his arms the day he left me, knowing that it would be difficult for me to see him again. He only came down during the summer and we had an entire school year ahead of us before that would happen again.

He cried in the privacy of my arms. His tough guy demeanor shed away from him like extra skin. That was the day he told me he loved me. And that was the day I said it back, not exactly knowing the ramifications of love and just how hard it can hit you.

Hey anonymous :)

It's Sam here and i would like to say one word first.... Wow.
This is amazing it almost made me cry. I had to stop the tears before my mother saw.
I love it and would be interested in more. Keep writting. There was one Grammatical error i did see at the end.

"That was the day he told me he loved me. And that was the day I said it back."

Instead of a period between the Me and And but a comma and a period between Back and Not.

It was amazing and I would love to read more :)

Hello anonomousx,

This is making me cry, I can almost not review this. Having someone who doesn't care what you look like... Those are really rare. I'm one of those people that is skeptical that love even exists, but when I read something like this, I know deep down that love is real. This is one of those pieces that makes you wish... I haven't done that in a long time.

Well here I am. :) I might mention things which other reviewers have already said, but ah well. I write as I read. Here goes...

When I read that first paragraph a couple of people came to mind...
And that second paragraph has completely changed that. The people I know care about looks and that stuff. So, okay, this seems to be going nicely.

Books <3

*Happy jumping* I found a nitpick! I think... I hope...

I went to church on occasions, when a neighbor lady took me and my best friend at the time, Felicia, and my best friends mom.

I think it should be friend's mom.

He had kissed me several times in person and as summer went on, despite our age, we begin getting more and more serious.

We began.

When he picked me up from camp that summer, with one of his older cousins in tow,

Typo: Town.

Oh my gods this is sad. I feel for you. :(

I laughed so hard when that was the only few things you nitpicked at. I'm also really awful at switching between past and present tenses, first person, ect. I just write and don't go back through and edit unless I enjoy the chapter I've written or I get feedback and I'm glad to have found this site so I can get that feedback I need, especially for this story because it took me 4 years to write it.

Also, older cousins in tow. As in, with him.

Hey! Hadj here to review your work!
This is fairly long, so I'll break it up by paragraph to better analyze it. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of time, so I'll only break down the first few paragraphs, and summarize the rest.

Paragraph 1
Your first sentence is a great introduction to the work. It grabs the reader without giving away too much. Your second sentence, was awkwardly composed.
Technically, its completely correct, but after your description of his V-neck shirts, the reader forgets the tense and can be slightly confused, and by jumping into "having".
I would recommend something like this (I put in a few more edits to alter the voice a bit):

He was 16 years old at the time and he had a habit of wearing these white, v-neck shirts that hugged his body. and having his hair spiked up His hair was always spiked up with too much gel.

Your final sentence is also a bit awkward. You write
But when I met him
which implies a knowledge of his existence before meeting him. In addition, the use of "Bad Person" is vague and informal.
Overall, your first paragraph gives a good description of Andrew and helps to grab the attention of the reader, but could use some work to flow more cleanly.

Paragraph 2
Here you give a good description of how you met Andrew, but the last sentence was a bit of a run-on. In addition, you describe the actions of others, but don't specifically say how Andrew was different.
Perhaps you could try to break it up, something like this:
He seemed as though he was more progressed then other people our age. He had a sense of maturity and didn't seem to worrywho were only worried about what I looked like. He seemed to like me rather then for the contents of my heart.

Paragraph 3
Good work here, but I'd like more description. You clearly had strong feelings for Andrew already, so go ahead and poor them onto the page. Just try not to overdo it with cheap sounding similes and cliche metaphors. (Not that you did this, just a warning) Other than that, nice job on this paragraph!

Paragraph 4
Your first sentence here is a little weird. "They day went on" implies a large passage of time, but "water dripped down my face" implies a specific moment. I wouldn't connect them in the same sentence they way you did. Then, in your last sentence you write
Occasionally, I would climb out of the pool and open up a book, resting away from the heat of the sun.
, and then follow with some dialogue. As I kept reading, I realized that "Hey" had occurred while you were reading, but that wasn't clear at first. Perhaps you could change the last sentence here to something along the lines of
The sun was hot so I climbed out of the pool and opened up my book, to rest from the heat.

I have to go soon, so this is as far as I'll get going paragraph by paragraph.

Summary and Overall Analysis
Overall nice work. You may not want to use a lot of my suggestions and thats fine, it was only what came into my head as I was reading, and we all have different point of views. I think its great that you are putting an event in your life onto paper and I wish you the best of luck here on YWS. Sorry the review was cut short, if I have a chance, I'll add more later.

Keep writing,
Can't wait for the next installment,
Hadj

Hi there!

He didn't care what I looked like or the way I talked or how much I weighed

Just wanted to point out here that you say Andrew didn't care what your MC looked like, then you mention that he didn't care how much she weighed in the same sentence. That's basically the same thing. This will work out just as well if you take out the part about not caring how much she weighed.

In the third paragraph, you mention that Andrew went to church and took communion. However, you mentioned that the first time they met was at a pool. So I'm wondering how they ended up at church all of the sudden. Maybe they went to church the next time that they saw each other? To be honest, that part is a bit confusing. A nice transition from the pool scene to the church scene would work well :)

This is a very nice introduction. I know that all of this information is quite important and it'll come into the story later on. Otherwise there would be no point to you writing this. After reading this, I have to say I'm interested in this boy. I'm not really one to read many romantic stories, but I still like them all the same. Andrew seems to be the perfect boy, but from the last sentence, I can tell their lives are not going to be perfect.

One thing I have to say about this though, is that I'm not sure what time this whole introduction is taking place. In the beginning your MC mentions that Andrew was sixteen. So I had this image that he was sixteen. But then she goes along and talks about the first time they met, which was when she was about 10 or 11. Does that mean that she fell in love with him when she was 10 or 11 and he was 16? I guess I'm wanting for more clarification on that.

The way you described everything was pretty good. There's a nice mix of telling us what's going on and explaining how your MC was feeling at the time. It's always important to have thoughts and feelings mixed in so you're not just telling us everything. You did a good job of that here. Keep it up!

Unlike Avalon, I feel like this is a bit rushed. You just kind of roll through it all and tell us everything that happened with Andrew and your MC in one go. I would've liked to see you slow it down and show us how the two of them fell in love. No one falls in love immediately like that. There is always that gradual climb towards loving someone. How exactly did this go with your MC? Did she follow him around, flirt with him shamelessly, call him on the phone everyday? I think a scene with her falling for his boy would help emphasize their relationship a bit more.

Overall this is a good piece. It's just an introduction, also known as a prologue, so there isn't going to be much happening. At least, I wouldn't expect much to happen. You explain the two characters's relationship and set up the story. In later chapters you'll start giving us more detail and really start exploring your characters. So there isn't anything I can comment on character and plot wise.

Keep writing!
**Noelle**

I appreciate you commenting and I'm aware that there is probably grammatical issues, however...this story is not what most people expect. Andrew has nothing to do with anything, he's just a character I had to put in there to make the rest of the story seem real. As this is something that ACTUALLY happened, which maybe I should write that down to ward off people who believe there is nothing behind this, this is a sensitive topic to me. I don't appreciate the harshness honestly. And other then that, I'm not going to reply and I don't wish for you to respond either.
