human and himself

In short stories

PreviousNext

Sitting here on my terrace and looking out onto the human world I empathize the confusion of our daily lives..

Its funny how our world works, one of my personal experiences tells this the best way …

It was the year 2005 and the month of October and like all kids, my daughter was pestering me about visiting my parents. Well you could tell a kid no for hundred times but the kid will never let go of a wish until its fulfilled, will they!!!

Well it was decided we would be visiting her grandparents during the  dasara  festival  I also wanted  to catch  a break from my heavy schedule as a product manager  in one of the biggest MN C in the country well we all would agree that the  stress that comes with our paycheck is more than the amount in it!!!

My hometown is among one of the most beautiful places on earth or maybe I feel so, going there has always made me feel young and fresh while the bustling city chokes me …

It’s weird how even though many things in our lives stress us we don’t try to change it, maybe that’s many of the things that makes us HUMAN!!

Well going back home I saw how my people were “backward” in our words but I realized how their backwardness is actually more logical than anything we would do …

My daughter was very happy for visiting her grandparents and so was I, not to mention stuffed by all the eateries prepared by mom and my aunts .Two days before our departure, my daughter was down with fever after seeing the symptoms it was concluded it was chicken pox which was at that time affecting many children as soon as my mother heard this she took my daughter to the veranda and laid her down on a bed of neem leaves and started praying to god.

I was shocked I could not believe that  at this kind of emergency my mother was doing such a foolish act I had a row with her and told her that this was superstition and this would only worsen my loving daughter’s condition . To this she retorted that it was the ire of god which was on my daughter and it could only be solved by a series of poojas and other worships... To this I told her that it was not something which could not be solved by her superstitions it could only be solved by medical help and my daughter needed it immediately. My mother was taken aback she could not believe that I was talking so “ignorantly”,she accused my city life for  making me think against the almighty .

I told her this was not the time and I had something more serious things to worry about rather than her comments about me or my “city life”.

I called in a cab   and rushed my daughter to local hospital but I was told that they did not have the necessary medical  help  needed  I was shocked and frustrated at the response of the hospital I immediately set out for  my “city”….

The next morning I reached the city and immediately took her to a well known hospital and got her admitted there …

I was told that a new drug from America was bought in the day before and it was a costly treatment but it was a 100% cure for chicken pox, I agreed and a paste of some kind was applied on my little daughter’s body for a week and at the end of week she was discharged.

I called up my mother and told her all that happened and told her how pointless and senseless her ideas to “please the Gods “was to heal my daughter.

She only retorted that nothing what I told her would change her beliefs; She was as stubborn as my daughter!!!!

After a few weeks of this incident my life was back to normal I had my busy schedule and very little time to spend with my daughter.

One Sunday while searching for the tax return papers I came across  the  ointment s used by the doctors to cure my daughter’s chicken pox ,I smiled to myself on thinking my mother’s reaction towards these …

I flipped the box to check what this mystical and amazing thing was made up of..

I was shocked to my death seeing the ingredients of the ointment

There in bold letters it was written

“NEEM EXTRACT”.

Hello! Interesting story, but I'd like to offer some helpful points?

1. Sentence structure.
2. Punctuation.
3. Spelling.

A few sentences stuck out to me, but I'll only bring attention to one (for the sake of time and length): "Well you could tell a kid no for hundred times but the kid will never let go of a wish until its fulfilled, will they!!!"
The meaning isn't quite clear because of wordage and punctuation. There is also some misspellings, but no worries.
How the sentence should read grammatically (without too much tweaking): "Well, you could tell a kid no hundreds of times, but the kid will never let go of a wish until it's fulfilled, will they?"

That one sentence kind of has a lot going on with it, so I'd suggest breaking it down, but I guess it works. Also, the purpose of compound sentences is to join two independent clauses, yes? This is correctly done by adding a [, but/and] between the two phrases. I just added the comma to your sentence.

Also, "it's" = "it is". "its" = "belonging to 'it'".

I don't think I reviewed very well... I'm sorry. If you have any questions or have something to say, feel free to message me! All writers, even the best of the best, have room for improvement. Keep up the good work!

thanks a lot on your views about my story "human and himself" and i will keep those in mind ...

Hey!
I understand the premises of the story; but I think you need to detail it out some more. This is like a short narrative-outline.
Put emotions, add atmosphere, be descriptive. Basically, hook the reader in.

(Also, you can totes make the NRI view humorous, if you play your cards right. Just FYI, check out today's op-ed in the magazine section of thehindu.com where there's a take on the metrosexual Indian and 'Doc'torrs.)

Cheers!

that has been bugging me for sometime,i will definitely try to add more description...
