precious or you know not... chapter 1

Precious…

Or you know…not?

Auden, it’s a strange name. I know but it’s my name and the only good thing my mom gave me in the ten years she lived with us. I can still remember the day she left. I just got back from my friend havens house and walked straight to my room. I could hear them yelling and sighed. That’s when it happened “fine Desiree, get out, leave but be warned this time I wont let you back in and you will not see our children” this came from my dad. “Good! I didn’t even want them, I don’t care about them” her words still echo in my head. They hurt my heart. I heard the sound of someone getting slapped and opened the door to see my mom holing her face and my older sister Rachel holding her hand. Then my mom left. Just walked out the door, never to be seen again. That was eight years ago. I was ten. Rachel was 16 and sky was 13. Now I was eighteen about to graduate high school. My brother lived with his girlfriend amber in an apartment down the street and my sister her husband and 3 kids lived in New Zealand. This left me and my dad alone in our big empty house. I flipped open my sidekick, and called haven “hey Hun” she said “you got the address for the big party tonight” I asked “of course, Hollis is here with me are you coming to get us?” she asked “ya im just putting on my jacket see you in ten” I said slipping my arm threw the sleeve of my leather jacket. “Bye” I hung up and walked downstairs I glanced at the clock 9:50. “Dad?” I wonder if he’s even home. “Ya Auden, im in the den. What’s up kiddo?” I heard his muffled voice say. I walked over to the den. Why we even had a den was ridiculous. It was probably my mom’s idea; now my dad just kind of sat in there sometimes and drank a glass of whiskey. “Im going out. Ill be back late so im just gonna crash at havens k” I said glancing again at the time this time it was 9:51. Ugh I was going to be late. “That’s great kid. Im going to sky and ambers they have some news I guess” we shared a look and laughed. “Have fun kid. Oh don’t get pregnant no drugs and don’t drink and drive you know the drill” he said waving a hand for “dramatic effect” I laughed. “Yeah, by dad” I walked to the door and looked at my dad, wee looked alike same black hair same bright green eyes same freckle filed slim face with strong cheek bones. My brother and sister took more after my mom completely gorgeous. In the obvious blond way but with the same green eyes.

I drove silently no music it had been that way since that summer. Music made me think of him and I didn’t like that. I finally got to the quick zip and got out of my silver mini cooper and walked over to haven and Hollis. “Hola my chicketas. Are you ready to Par Tay?” Hollis said shaking her hips and moving her arms. “Love the cute outfit aud very original” this was sarcasm of course because I was wearing jeans a white t shirt and my black leather jacket…like normal. “Okay im going in you want anything?” they each handed me five bucks and said the usual. I walked into the store. Grabbed two monsters yellow for Hollis and purple for haven. Then I grabbed one extra large fountain cokes and a jumbo pack of skittles for me. That’s when I bumped into him. One zip coke covering the front of my pants and his. “Oh my god im so sorry” I said fumbling for some napkins. “No it’s my fault” Mr. Stranger said as he grabbed napkins from me. I looked up at him, he was cute. Brown hair just long enough to flip around his head. Big brown eyes and a perfect smile. He looked at me “you have really nice eyes” he said. “Nice pick up line keeping it old school I see” I smirked. He laughed shaking his head. He stuck out his hand, is shook it “hey, im Auden” I said still shaking his hand. “Cool name, im Nate. Oh and let me buy you two more drinks.” he said reaching for some more napkins. “Ah well I guess that would be okay. It’s the least you can do” I said joking. “Well gotta love a girl with a sense of humor” I walked over to the fountain and poured more pop as he paid. “So. Nate what are you doing out at the quick zip at 10 o clock at night?” I asked glancing at my watch for the time. “my friends are going to some dumb party and want me to drive so im buying some snacks for the way there” he said smiling I was going to ask what party just as the bell rang and in walked Hollis. “Auden comes on girl we have to go…” she stopped talking “who’s your friend?” She asked looking Nate up and down. “Oh um this is Nate” I said turning red “nate this is Hollis.” I added “oh hey. Nice to meet you. Sorry for keeping Auden here from you. I was just going anyway. Bye Hollis, auden have a nice night ladies” and with that he was gone.

The party was already outta control when we got there. There was some girl in a small dress (I guess it was supposed to be a dress looked like a bandanna) “dancing” by a very large stereo. Guys fighting by the keg “auden!!” oh no. no no not now! “Sup my home girl, god it’s been forever, come give me some sugar” I spun around of course it was drew it was always drew. At every party, at the mall, creeping at the quick zip. He even followed me to the grocery store once. Hollis leaned close to my ear “talk to one geek in high school and he’s around forever” she laughed I weaved threw the crowd trying to avoid bumping into drew while apparently bumping into some other guy... “Okay like honestly watch where you’re going you…” well this is awkward I thought as I looked up to see Nate again “so, is this how you pick up guys Auden. Cause you tried once not sure it will work again.” Okay he was unbelievably cute so naturally I blushed. “auden” drew said “ugh why now” I groaned nate looked at me and smiled . “Hey, are you okay…come on” he said winking and grabbing my hand and pulling me outside. “So, is this like your diabolical plan to get me alone with you Nate?” I said laughing “well I would like to talk, tell me about you. Tell me all your secrets Auden I need to know them I thrive on the gossip of girls just out of high school” he said looking at me with a creepy grin. “Please oh just paaaleese tell me your kidding.” I said smiling. “Of course im kidding, but I do have a proposition for you” I looked at him “oh do you” I said “and what would that be my kind sir?” I said giving my best old Oklahoman accent “well” he said “I vote on a hearty game of 21 questions” he smiled “I get to know you, and you get to know me” he grinned “it’s a win win situation” I thought for a moment “okay” I finally said “only if you go first though” I said glancing around. We were behind the party house in the back woods. I never used to be afraid of the woods even at night and then the summer thing happened I haven’t been able to bring myself to go into them especially at night, but now, here. With Nate I hardly noticed where we were until we stopped talking. “So, what is the strangest thing that has ever happened to you” he asked “well, once I bumped into this creep at the quick zip and he followed me to a party.” I sideways glanced at him “im kidding. The strangest thing that has ever happened to me would be…when I was 8 my mom and dad used to fight a lot and before she took of for good one night. She came into my room” I smiled remembering the way she stroked my hair and said everything was okay. “My mom was never a mom. She was more like an older sister who only talked to you when she needed you to lie for her or to sneak out your window” he looked at me confused “long story…any ways one night she came in, she thought I was asleep. And she scooped me up into her arms. I was a small chilled.” I said smiling “was…?” he said standing up straight and only then did I realized he was at least a foot taller then my 5” foot build. I glared up at him “sorry, im listening” he said zipping his lips and throwing away an imaginary key. “she stroked my hair and said she loved me the most and it was going to be the hardest to let me go, she apologized for leaving and she kissed my head.” I started to get chocked up like I did whenever I thought of her. Nate held my hand. “She stayed with me the whole night. And then two days later she was gone. She said she never wanted us and that she never loved my dad” Nate wiped a thumb across my cheek only then did I realize I was crying. I let him hug me as I took in the warmth he murmured something in my hair.” What?” I said. He smiled “it’s your turn, he said walking and pulling me along with him by the hand.

We spent all night together by the time we got back to the party I knew his last name. His middle name, his age, how may girls he’s “been with” how many guys (which was 0 thankfully) and where he went to school. “So” he said “it’s your turn” I laughed. “Okay I got one, if you could do anything right now what would it be?” I asked he grabbed my hand and stepped closer to me. So close so very close. He wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me even closer. When his lips were inches from mine he spoke softly. “Id…does this!” he said picking me up and throwing me into the pool I didn’t even know was there. At the last minutes I grabbed his arm and he came tumbling in after me. The water was cold but I didn’t care I jumped up onto the ladder and looked around I didn’t see him it was dark to dark to see anything. Just as I was turning to get out something. Well someone grabbed me from behind pulling me back under. We twisted and splashed until it got to cold and we had to get out. We walked into the pool house to find some towels. He wrapped one around me. “He smiled “so how about you?” he asked I gave him a questioning look. “If you could do anything right now what would you…” but I was already doing it. My arm around his broad shoulders his hands on my tiny waist. Lips against lips chest against chest. Soft and sweet. My hands played with his hair, his played with my shirt. And then the door swung open. And Hollis and haven stood in the doorway. “Well, well, well. What do we have here Hollis?” haven smiled “well I do believe it is a couple of hooligans kissing in the pool house. All drippy and wet from there midnight dip” Hollis laughed. Haven looked from Nate to me “if you’re done here. We gotta get going it’s nearly 3:00 and we have work tomorrow she said gesturing to her and Hollis. “Okay im coming just give me a minute ill meet you at the coop” they giggled and scampered away. “Okay, well im sorry but I have to go” I smiled. “Well can I at least have your number?” he asked wow this was the perfect night and I just kept getting better. But I had school in the fall and stupid summer vacation with the girls. “Let’s keep it to chance. If I see you again after tonight ill give you my number, if not…it just wasn’t meant to be” and before he could object I kissed him and walked away.

We got back to havens I went right into her second guest room aka my room.

I laid down on my bed. My last thought before I woke up in the morning was one simple word that made the corners on my mouth stretch to my eyes “nate”.

When I woke up there was several post it’s stuck to my head. *hey aud, we left for work at 10 and your still not up* *auden its probably going to be a very awkward morning for you since deny is home for the summer starting last night. Sorry I didn’t…* it continued onto a next post it *tell you I forgot you guys had a thing* and by thing she meant I dated him secretly for a year and only she new and then he dumped me hard when he was in his second year of university. I believe the reason was “Becky” she was astronomy major and was okay with the fact deny had a girlfriend. Well that was all in the past I guess. I walked down stairs and sure enough he was sitting at the kitchen table. I walked to the coffee pot and poured it in my favorite mug it was the one I got haven 3 years ago for Christmas it had snoopy and Charlie brown on it. He looked up from his cereal. “Hey auden, would you mind putting on some close I have my roommate coming over. He has no where to go this summer so he’s staying with us and I don’t want him to have to look at you young little behind” he said scooping up his bowl and walking to the sink. I looked over at him. “Well, deny you used to love it as I recall” I paused taking a sip of my coffee “how’s Becky?” I said smiling. He looked at my t-shirt and panties; “just at least put on pants…” the door bell rang. I smiled “ill get it” I ran for the door. When the door finally swung open. This tall, beautiful girl, with fiery red hair stood before me with a smile on her face “well hi there darling” she said with the thickest Texan accent “you must be haven, your big brother has just told me so much about you” the blank expression on my face made her speak again “im Becky, your brothers fiancé” I blinked “oh your Becky” I smiled “well in that case come in. but I should tell you im not haven, im her best friend…auden” she looked shocked “and you must have heard a lot about me” I smiled and walked to the kitchen “deny, your roommate is here, oh sorry I mean fiancé” I glared at him. Put my coffee cup down and walked away.

Hey there!

The Enigma is completely right. With dialogue, whenever someone new is talking you should start another paragraph. Also, keep in mind to organize your paragraphs not into giant chunks like they are, but into good bites with important infor in each one. Open your favorite book and read a few pages. You'll see the paragraphs are specifically put together in a certain way, not with many, many sentences, but all strung together with a purpose. Eventually you'll find what your purpose is.

My biggest thought on this is that you started in a weird place. I liked your first line, of course, about her name and how it's the best thing her mother ever gave her. It sets us up for sadness and it gives us your narrator's attitude, but after that things kind of fall apart for that paragraph.

First, you "flash back" to when her mother left, but it's all in telling so it isn't very dramatic. If this is where you want to start the story, show the scene, don't just give us the smaller details of the event. Beginnings are important because you need too hook the reader and let them know what your story is about - hard things to do all at once, but you can do it. Again, look at your favorite book and read just the first page. Where is the hook? Are you interested by page one? Do you know the characters, the scene, the setting? If not on page one, keep reading until you find those things. I'm sure the author shows the story, pulls us into the scene. And you want to do the same from the get-go.

I also thought the way you flooded into background information wasn't needed:

Rachel was 16 and sky was 13. Now I was eighteen about to graduate high school. My brother lived with his girlfriend amber in an apartment down the street and my sister her husband and 3 kids lived in New Zealand. This left me and my dad alone in our big empty house.

I'm sure this is important information, but as it is it's just flooding the scene with background information that isn't really important right now. Remember what you're trying to do with a beginning: Hook the reader, introduce the characters/conflict/setting. Background info is important but the reader isn't going to care about it until we know and care about your main character. Start there and move forward.

I hope this review helps! Best of luck.

You start off well with a great hook, but the rest needs some work. The first thing you should do is break down your paragraphs a lot. Big paragraphs deter possible readers. Remember, dialogue almost always starts its own paragraph.
My suggestions are below in red.

Auden#FF0000 ">. It’s a strange name#FF0000 ">, I know but it’s my name and the only good thing my mom gave me in the ten years she lived with us.

I like how you kick off right away, giving us the character's name and setting up some of her back story, all in one sentence. This tells a reader something about the main character's mother, and also about the MC's feelings toward her mother. Well done.

I can still remember the day she left. I #FF0000 ">had just got back from my friend #FF0000 ">Haven#FF0000 ">'s house and walked straight to my room. I could hear them yelling#FF0000 ">. I and sighed.

Since this is something your character is recalling from the past, "had" should appear before her actions. Also, separate your character's actions. Her parents were yelling, but if you put in the same sentence "and sighed", it can get confusing as to who is doing what.

I heard the sound of someone getting slapped and opened the door to see my mom holing her face and my older sister Rachel holding her hand. Then my mom left. Just walked out the door, never to be seen again. That was eight years ago. I was ten. Rachel was 16 #FF0000 ">sixteenand #FF0000 ">Sky was 13#FF0000 ">thirteen. Now I was eighteen#FF0000 ">, about to graduate high school. My brother lived with his girlfriend amber in an apartment down the street and my sister her husband and 3 kids lived in New Zealand.

I was a little confused here. From the sounds of it, Rachel's actions suggest she left with her mother, but then you mention her later on as though you knew where she was the whole time. Can you clarify? Also, I'm assuming Sky is her brother, but that was a little unclear as well. Remember to write out numbers when possible, or at least stay consistent with how you write them.
You make a quick transition from past to present, which is good, but it does throw the reader a little bit when you start in with the dialogue right away. Maybe add a quick sentence about the character's feelings about her life right now.

I flipped open my sidekick, and called haven “#FF0000 ">Hey Hun” she said “you got the address for the big party tonight#FF0000 ">?” I asked “of course, Hollis is here with me are you coming to get us?” she asked “ya #FF0000 ">I'm just putting on my jacket see you in ten#FF0000 ">,” I said slipping my arm threw the sleeve of my leather jacket. “Bye” I hung up and walked downstairs I glanced at the clock#FF0000 ">, which read 9:50.

This is a good place to start a new paragraph. You also need to break the dialogue into separate paragraphs, because it becomes difficult to tell who the speaker is.

I hope this is enough to help you work on your story. I think it'd get tedious for both of us to go through the entire text now. Feel free to PM me if you need more help with the rest. Write on.
