Objection- Prologue

PreviousNext

I sat in the dimly lit, ancient church. The stained glass windows were old and cracked around the edges, the ribbed vault ceiling looming overhead like a stormcould.  The pews were packed tight withmen with suits to tight for them, and hypocritical women wearing obnoxious hats and fanning themselves.

And then there was me.

I had one of my nicer shirts on, as well as my cleanest pants.

I stared down at my knees, feeling my stomach ties itself in knots at I thought about what I was about to do. I tried in vain to slow my breathing. I heard the moment approach.

"... Speak now, or forever hold your peace."

It could have been a minute, an hour, a year, but it felt like an eternity. My heart lept into my throat and I shut my eyes, gritting my teeth. It was by some miracle that I found myself on my feet when I opened my eyes again.

Every single person's eyes were on the poor girl daring to stand among the higher class. When I say everyone's eyes were locked on me, that includes the witch of a girl in the white dress, as well as my best friend's.

My gaze met his, and that alone gave me the confidence to say clearly,

"I object."

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Night(whichever one it is in your part of the world),

Hi! I'm here to leave a quick review!!

First Impression:

Anyway let's get right to it,

I sat in the dimly lit, ancient church. The stained glass windows were old and cracked around the edges, the ribbed vault ceiling looming overhead like a stormcould. The pews were packed tight withmen with suits to tight for them, and hypocritical women wearing obnoxious hats and fanning themselves.

And then there was me.

I had one of my nicer shirts on, as well as my cleanest pants.

Well...that's not something you usually see in most prologues, this is a much more relaxed location and if I'm not mistaken this looks to be some sort of wedding ceremony going on here although it is a bit harder to try and judge what exactly the protagonist is doing there. Judging from the way you've described things it looks like you're trying to show a contrast there between this person who's much underdressed compared to the others present here.

Well...I have a feeling I know where this is going here with that particular line being said at that time while our protagonist here appears to be putting in some extra effort not to faint and gather all the courage that they've got here...well, this certainly is a great depiction of just how nervous she's feeling there.

Every single person's eyes were on the poor girl daring to stand among the higher class. When I say everyone's eyes were locked on me, that includes the witch of a girl in the white dress, as well as my best friend's.

My gaze met his, and that alone gave me the confidence to say clearly,

Aaand that ends exactly as I thought it would...and I like that, a wonderful moment to put in a prologue there, one that certainly gets the reader's attention and gets it rather nicely here....its not something I've seen used too often in a story before so there's the uniqueness as well. All in all, this appears to be a pretty solid prologue right here. :D

Aaaaand that's it for this one.

Overall:

As always remember to take what you think was helpful and forget the rest.

This is definitely good. More than good, it's amazing! Probably one of the best things I've read on here in a while. I really appreciate how your prologue actually did what a prologue was supposed to do, like Mia said. It made me insanely curious to read more, and it also gave me a small snippet of what the story is about without giving anything away. I come across a lot of prologues that just explain stuff, like events or characters or just spend forever introducing the story, and it makes me not really want to go onto the next chapter when I'm done reading it. But you definitely know what you're doing xD

You did go back and fix typos, which is great. But I think you left out the one in the 6th line down, the "I stared down at me knees" part. When I post stories, I write them on MS word or something with spell check first before I copy and paste onto the forums.

Can't wait to read more! Please PM or message me whenever you get new chapters up so I can read them :)

But what if she's a PIRATE! :0

Hey Uranium.

Just saw you posted something so came to review. I hope I help.

My heart leapt into my throat and I shut my eyes, gritting my teeth.

I have to begin by saying that for a prologue, it was really good. I've mostly seen writers going too ahead in their prologues which basically ruins the fun of it. But you knew what the limitations are and stuck to it. This prologue was short, to the point and did arouse my curiosity. So, in that aspect I would have to say you did a brilliant job.

Your writing is good and you did create a scene in front of my eyes without using much words. That's a good thing, too. But on the other hand, you had lots of typos. I hope they were typos and you knew the right thing. Anyways, I've corrected most of them for you so that shouldn't be a problem. I'll just advice you to proof read your piece from next time before posting. We have a spell checker option while posting so you could check that out.

Your story is not clear to me yet which is exactly the purpose of a prologue. But in the second last paragraph things went a bit weird. I couldn't understand what the narrator was trying to say. I mean, whom is she referring to as 'poor girl'? That was something unclear.

Other than that, I don't have much to say since this is just the beginning. I'd like you to check your spellings from next.Do PM me when you post more 'cause I can't wait to read what's next.

Keep Writing.

Cheers!
Mia

I'm so bad with typos ;n;
Yes, they're ones that I know are wrong, and I know which ones are right to put in place of them. And thank you so much! I can't say how grateful I am for the post.
So yes, thank you!

~Sarah

You're welcome, Uranium! :)

It's not an issue if it is just your typos but next time you might wanna go for a spell checker. It really does wonders.

Just keep writing,
Mia
