TW: Mentions of illness, death, and survivor's guilt ahead.
It had been two moons since Pinkeyes had died, but the memory of the battle was still fresh in Havenpaw's mind. The feeling of Leafpaw's claws raking across his body and then Pinkeyes dashing in at the last moment to save him had been too much. He'd never had the chance to say thank you. He'd never been able to admit he had a crush on her. He'd never been able to truly say goodbye.
"Riverpaw!" Rookfeather's sharp mew sounded nearby, shaking Havenpaw from his thoughts. The apprentice watched as the blind warrior padded into the medicine den. "Why are you in here again? We're supposed to be training with Graypaw and Dewwhisker today!"
"Pinestep wanted help sorting her herbs," Riverpaw replied. "Since Berryfur's retired--"
"Some other cat can do that!" Rookfeather snapped harshly. "Now, come on. I'm sure they're waiting on us."
Havenpaw watched as his brother followed Rookfeather out of camp. A chill crept up his spine as someone's tail tip traced up his back. "He was never meant to be a warrior," Lightningsong mewed sadly. "Your mother won't be happy when he changes his path. Rookfeather, either. But he has his own destiny to follow."
Havenpaw looked at his grandmother and sighed, flicking his tail sadly. "He's going to be a medicine cat."
"Correct," she agreed, laying down beside him. "Not yet, I think. But soon. Just like the rest of us, Berryfur has old bones. It'll be a few moons; I doubt he'll make it through leaf bare."
Havenpaw's eyes grew wide. "Did StarClan speak to you?" he mewed in awe.
"No," the pale gray cat purred, "These old bones have seen enough cats die to tell when someone's time is near."
Before Havenpaw could reply, Berryfur padded out of the elders den on the other side of camp, stopping every few paw steps as he neared the medicine den. The brown tabby's fur was ruffled and unkempt like a twisted bush's branches after a wind storm. His yellow eyes were dull and his whiskers drooped.
"That doesn't look like death," Havenpaw whispered. "Maybe tired and old, but not death..." His mind flashed back to the battle and how horrid Pinkeyes's death was.
"Not all deaths are the same, little one." Lightningsong rested her white muzzle on top of Havenpaw's head. "Old age, illness, and hunger are marks of death, too. We lost your father, Frostyshade, and Branchstar all to greencough last leaf bare..."
Havenpaw had never known his father; Spottedfoot had gone to StarClan before he was born. According to Shorestar, Havenpaw and his littermates had been born just a few days later. "What was he like?" the apprentice asked curiously.
Lightningsong lifted her head and stretched her neck, yawning. "He was... an odd one," she mewed at last. "He and Pinestep were siblings through their mother, Fawnheart." The elder flicked her tail towards the she-cat, who was sharing a fish with Mothear and Sunsetfur. "He also had a connection with StarClan, but Frostyshade had already been made a full medicine cat when he was born, and Spottedfoot had no mind for memorizing herbs." The older cat shook her head, purring cheerfully as she recalled the past. "But despite that, he and Shorestar made a good pair."
"Will Fawnheart retire, do you think?"
Lightningsong shook her head. "She's lost her son and her mate; she'll want a distraction for a long while yet. Grief can and will push some cats to their limits, Havenpaw." She licked his cheek and dotingly rubbed her muzzle against his head. "It's not your fault Pinkeyes died. Just remember that, okay?"
Havenpaw nodded but didn't look at his grandmother. "Okay," he mumbled before pushing himself up. "I'm going to go check on the other elders. I need to get back to my duties."
"A true warrior already," Lightningsong purred. "Just don't push yourself."
"I won't."

Hey there! Plume here, with a review!
Ooh, this section was super interesting! I think it's really great how you show the different reactions to Pinkeyes' death. I also liked how this chapter was sort of a reprieve in a way. There'd been a lot of action, and it was nice to kind of hone in on relationships
I also really enjoyed the conversation between Lightningsong and Havenpaw. I think a lot of good topics were addressed in a very masterful way. I especially liked the part about death (gosh that sounds so morbid) because I think you did it with a lot of grace. There's a certain breed of special that comes from talking to an older person (or in this case, cat) about death, because they've seen so much of it and they're closer to it themselves. I think you've captured that energy really well, so nice work!!
I was also wondering (and this is kind of irrelevant, so feel free to disregard): what are the lifespans of these cats? Are they like normal cats, or is this some sort of alternate universe where cats have human lifespans? I'm just curious.
Specifics
To me, I feel like the word "crush" has some flighty and bubbly connotations. It ruins the slightly somber and poetic tone of this section. I feel like it would be better if you said something along the lines of "he'd never been able to tell her how he loved her as more than a friend," or something like that.
I really loved this bit. Everything you managed to convey in it was just super great. I love the seamless transitions between topics and the naturalistic but still so wise air it has. It's a really great piece of writing, is all.
Overall: nice work!! I really enjoyed this chapter despite it being not as action-packed as previous ones. I'm super excited to read other chapters in the future! Until next time!
Thanks for the review!
To answer your question-- I was thinking that I'd stick to the natural-ish lifetime of real cats with the occasional cat that lives rather long. After all, the oldest cat ever was nearly 40. These things will happen XD :P
HELLO. <3
ahhhh :/ that is such a tough feeling. I can totally understand how much pain he must be in, and all those questions make this heartbreaking. OH and I didn't know he had a crush on her! that's heartbreaking </3
OHH that's wonderful!!! although, like they were saying, it's probably not going to go well with his mother >.< hopefully she'll understand that you can't change your destiny
OHH so StarClan can speak to cats too omg that's chilling :O Imagine being able to communicate with them
asdfhjk oh my gosh this is also quite chilling 0.0 this whole chapter has such a broken feel to it </333
CAH I JUST GIVE HAVENPAW A BIG HUG OH MY GOSH </3
Ooh, some sneaky background information, I love that! c: Also, "green cough" sounds like a not so very fun illness >.>
This made me laugh xD this would be me haha
YESSSS that is so true, but I can definitely see how it is going to be hard for Havenpaw to accept that. My best advice for him would be that Pinkeyes died for him, so he should try to live the rest of his life fully for her and don't like her actions go in vain <3 I hope someone tells him that or he realizes that, because it really isn't his fault. Ahh, this is more heartbreaking than the death itself for me :/
YES HAVENPAW PLEASE DON'T PUSH YOURSELF OR I WILL FIGHT YOU WITH KINDNESS <3
I love how you were able to subtly add some exposition in this chapter. It felt natural, not forced at all. I think you're also doing a good job with having some prominent external and internal conflicts; it would make English teachers very happy xD it's always nice to have both, as you can see how certain characters will respond to them and change as a result.
This also feels really well planned. Each character seems to have a connection with everyone else, and it's nice to see how certain characters are connected through your exposition spots. Sometimes I still forget who is who xD because there are a lot of characters, and it can get hard to keep up. BUT I THINK I GOT DOWN the Havenpaw family because of this chapter, so that was really nice c: hopefully I won't forget in the next few days aha
I don't really have much to say in this chapter! ^_^ It was a nice way to explore some internal conflict and go into the mind of Havenpaw and what he is dealing with. These are some of my favourite types of chapters / conflicts, and I think this went pretty well c:
Just gonna clarify the Havenpaw family tree to be sure xD
Lightningsong (alive) and Russetclaw (dead) had two children, Blackfoot (alive) and Shorestar (alive). Fawnheart had Spottedfoot (dead) and Pinestep (alive).
Shorestar and Spottedfoot had Graypaw, Havenpaw, Ripplepaw, and Riverpaw-- all of whom are alive uwu
This is sad, but also happy uwu
